Stealth boast of the day ?

I assume it’s because they are going to pay for something expensive as it’s madness and totally unnecessary to actually keep that amount in a current account . Probably off to collect a new car , that’s the only time I have that amount in my current account .

I’m sorry if this sounds stupid, but if you wouldn’t keep it in your current account, where would you keep it? Let’s say you were planning to buy in six months and had circa £100K in a few current accounts. What would you do with it?

In an instant access deposit account, of course.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/11/2022 14:44

Another one here who's regularly had £20k in a current account.

We just have the lite Santander account now, and keep savings separately as the interest is higher but for a good few years, instead of overpaying the mortgage we just left the money in a Santander 123 account that paid 3% interest while the interest charged on our mortgage was less than 1%, so making a profit and no incentive to pay it off.

I didn't leave receipts with the balance lying around for others to see, but DP got a shock when he saw the balance because he doesn't take any interest in finances and refers to my exploitation of differences in interest rates as 'money laundering'.

I keep telling him that if he keeps on like that, I'll get locked up (not really it's all legal) and then he'll be in trouble because he has no idea how much we have, where it is or how to get to it.

Eve223 · 05/11/2022 14:46

Some posters over on a holiday thread are spending that amount as a bare minimum on their 2023 holiday!

Cuddlywuddlies · 05/11/2022 16:33

I’m a bit shocked at the amount of ppl who think that the only time you can have a chunk of money is when you are about to pay for something. There are plenty of ppl who have ample savings for a rainy day.

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/11/2022 13:03

I totally misread that!!! I thought they’d just spend 23 grand in Sainsburys!!!

I was thinking I know prices are going up but HOW

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣

I need to get more sleep

🤣 😂😆

WitchyOsmansXraySpectre · 05/11/2022 18:34

Does it matter? It's a complete random stranger's bank balance.

It matters enough for you to comment Hmm

You're shocked that some people are poor and can't afford to save for a rainy day? Lucky you.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/11/2022 18:37

I was expecting a post about the lovely charity shop pineapple.

That's a good house deposit where I live.

Yarrawonga · 05/11/2022 18:40

There are plenty of ppl who have ample savings for a rainy day.

But if they have any sense, they don’t keep them in an account that earns nothing in interest.

AndStand · 05/11/2022 18:45

@FayeGovan I've got more than that in my current account, and there was no "luck" in it being there. There's years and years of bloody hard work and risking everything to set a business up.
And cheers for hoping we're "fucking miserable" with it. I'm going to be a widow in the not too distant future and I'm thankful for some financial security. But I can guarantee I'll be fucking miserable when DH is gone.
And it's only in the current account temporarily because I'm moving it between banks.

Riapia · 05/11/2022 18:46

That receipt was left by a mumsnetter that has been boasting about not having their heating on yet.
😁😁😁.

Isn't it recommended to have enough for a few months living expenses in the bank? Not an easy thing for a lot of people obviously, but we have about this much in our current account just in case. I wouldn't say it's excessive.

Silly to keep it in a current account, unless it has exceptionally large interest rates?
I have precisely 0 savings, so can’t even imagine seeing that total!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/11/2022 19:04

It’s really stupid to keep large amounts in your current account. If someone does get access to your bank card/ Apple Pay/ PayPal etc. that’s the one account they can use.

That’s before you consider the lack of interest. I run my current accounts to almost zero each month as everything goes into savings or investments.

I would unless your current account is paying generous interest. Better to stick it in an instant access savings account.

Until very recently indeed, instant access savings accounts have been paying pathetic interest.

In savings yes, not in your current account, any fool knows that surely?

Palmface · 05/11/2022 20:14

Current interest rates for savings aren't that crash hot where I am, so we have savings as well in other places earning very little.

Anyway, I didn't mean to piss anyone off and said it wasn't easy for most people, just that it's not like there's hundreds of thousands of pounds in there.

Starseeking · 05/11/2022 21:03

The day before my mortgage deposit got transferred I had well into 6 figures in my current account, the day after, less than £500 to last me for a month 🙈🙈🙈

You really don't know other people's circumstances, and hardly a stealth boast, maybe they just accidentally forgot to remove it from the machine.

Haha I was just about to say the same thing, then I thought they'd withdrawn that amount at an atm 😂 I need sleep too 😴

Zipps · 05/11/2022 21:34

My Dp's have way more than that in their current account despite advice on the contrary from various people including me It's just how they have always been. They don't do online banking and still go and draw out cash each week, pay their bills and buy insurance etc in town.
It's much safer, I was told by the bank, to have a side savings account if you want easy access to a large amount and just move some over as you need.

mrsjimhopper · 05/11/2022 21:46

I stand correct corrected! I have zero in my current account as I pay it all out to various other accounts using a zero based budget. It's really boring but a good method for me. If I had that much I'd not know when to stop spending. I'm very spendy.

Yep I would never save a penny if I didn't move it out of my current account on payday Grin

That’s before you consider the lack of interest. I run my current accounts to almost zero each month as everything goes into savings or investments.

Not everyone spends from their current account, many just use them for bills, so the card might not be attached to other payment services or even normally leave the house.

Spending comes out of a different account, much easier to know how much you have to spend, or is done on a credit card that is cleared each month by direct debit.

Plus as others have said, some current accounts pay better interest than many savings accounts so a good place to keep your money.

Or it could be a snapshot and that money could be there temporarily and on its way to pay a house deposit, tax bill or large purchase like a car.

mrsjimhopper · 06/11/2022 08:38

@PanicAtTheBigTesco solidarity and an AMAZING username!

queensonia · 06/11/2022 08:47

If they're self employed, they might need that to pay their tax bill in January
