Lucky buggers. All these posters saying they hope the enjoy it and are happy etc etc. Bollocks to that. I hope they are as miserable as fucking sin 😂

Aren't you lovely.

FrownedUpon · 05/11/2022 12:58

Lots of people have similar amounts of money. It’s really not that unusual.

Just honest. And i dont pretend I'm anything else.

Overthebow · 05/11/2022 13:02

It’s not a particularly high or unusual sum of money to have in a bank account so not sure why it’s something worth taking a picture of.

You hope they are miserable because they have £20k? Really?

Luredbyapomegranate · 05/11/2022 13:03

I totally misread that!!! I thought they’d just spend 23 grand in Sainsburys!!!

I was thinking I know prices are going up but HOW

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣

I need to get more sleep

That's probably what some posters on here give little Peregrine and Araminta for pocket money every year.

Palmface · 05/11/2022 11:28

Isn't it recommended to have enough for a few months living expenses in the bank? Not an easy thing for a lot of people obviously, but we have about this much in our current account just in case. I wouldn't say it's excessive.

Are you ignorant enough to think that's possible for most people?

@Overthebow

We call this ‘a joke’, and as a helpful extra hint the PP has put a laughing emoji next to it.

What further signposting would you like? A Joke Warning?? An official MN ‘Lighthearted’ flag???

Yeah but thinks it's ok because she's honest 🤨

Actually never mind. Most self-proclaimed wealthy mumsnetters are stingy bastards that begrudge feeding their children more than one meal a day.

Bbq1 · 05/11/2022 13:15

Can't enlarge it. How much is the balance?

LeoDiCapricorn · 05/11/2022 13:17

I had this in my current account my mum died and I sold her house. I miss her and would prefer her to be here

Does it matter? It's a complete random stranger's bank balance.

Bbq1 · 05/11/2022 13:17

Oh, 20k. Well, it's not a bad amount obviously but it's not major megabucks. Not that unusual. It's not like they are millionaires.

You could be earning loads more interest if you put your money into a proper savings account, this is what we have done. We have to wait 3 months for any withdrawals but we’re earning a decent wedge from the interest. Just have to be organised if we want to get our hands on any of it.

“Not an easy thing for a lot of people” are you that self absorbed that you don’t realise that is an IMPOSSIBILITY to a lot people. I’ve never had that much money and never likely to. Some live month to month with nothing or a deficit in their account at the end of it. Those that keep harping on that it’s not unusual or a huge amount, well it may not be to you but it’s a bloody fortune others.

jonesy1999 · 05/11/2022 13:36

The only time I've had that amount in my current account was earlier this year when moving house and was waiting to transfer it to my solicitor for the deposit.

My bank hounded me about it, incessantly. I had various phone calls, from different individuals, hassling me about the "large sum of money in my current account" and "when will it be moved?"

It was irritating and I wasn't expecting it.

I know it's probably not wise to have that kind of cash sitting in a low interest current account but really, why would the bank care?

Mentalpiece · 05/11/2022 13:46

Many years ago when internet banking was just taking off, I checked my bank account to find just over £1M in it.
To say I was shocked is an understatement!
I checked again a few minutes later and it had disappeared and my account showed as I expected.
I asked about it when I next went into the bank and it was explained that at midnight, millions of direct debits, standing orders and Bacs start going through the accounts and some wayward ones go via several accounts before going into the correct one.
I had been checking my account just as it hit mine for a few seconds.
I can honestly say I have been a millionaire 😂

Babyroobs · 05/11/2022 13:52

Cuddlywuddlies · 05/11/2022 11:20

I think having money like this (somewhere, not necessarily in a current account) is more common than ppl think.

Yes it absolutely is. I deal with a lot of older clients at work and pensioners and many have much more than this in savings, maybe not in current account. It really isn't a lot going into retirement and current accounts have often been paying more interest that savings accounts in recent years so not unusual.

Babyroobs · 05/11/2022 14:03

Wheretheskyisblue · 05/11/2022 11:34

I like to keep £20k in my santander current account as the interest rate is pretty good and I don't have to worry month to month about having enough money to clear mortgage, credit cards etc

Yes my dh does the same as the interest rate on the 123 account has been better than most savings accounts the past few years. He is only now looking at other options as savings account rates rise. His was inheritance, it's absolutely not unusual to see people in their fifties with this kind of sum. If he lost his job it would be wiped out in six months if our expenses stayed the same. I think it's just that many younger people just spent what they earn, that's just normal in your twenties , thirties and forties when you have a mortgage and kids.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 05/11/2022 14:10

RishisProudMum · 05/11/2022 12:44

I’m sorry if this sounds stupid, but if you wouldn’t keep it in your current account, where would you keep it? Let’s say you were planning to buy in six months and had circa £100K in a few current accounts. What would you do with it?

£50k in premium bonds, the rest in an easy access savings account e.g. Chase paying 2.1%, that would be £525 on £50k in 6 months but potentially more in a different account.

LeafHunter · 05/11/2022 14:10

I’d read this as them having £20k of nectar points!

Chase has a good interest rate right now so I can imagine people moving it in and out of there to benefit from that. Think it’s technically a current account.

QuietYou · 05/11/2022 14:11

That’s not that exceptional for some parts/pockets of the world.

That didn't take long!

I'm surprised there hasn't been a "it's actually not that much if you live in London"
post yet.

MrsDeWinter · 05/11/2022 14:20

Atm depending on the rate your current account gives you, its can be better to have savings kept there.
We have filled our ISAs but due to DH old job we get a v preferential rate on our current account so the majority of our money is there.
We did have it in an index linked savings account , which DH got cold feet about (in the industry) earlier in the year and moved it all to the current account which is giving us a higher IR than other financial products on the market that suit our goals atm
