You can download an app called Star Chart for free and it will tell you what you can see in the heavens. You just point your phone/device at the bit of sky you are looking at and you will get a map of all the stars/planets/some satellites etc. The bright thing you can see just above the moon is Jupiter.

Thanks for this!!

Great thread OP!

WhatWouldHopperDo · 04/11/2022 20:52

@TwoMonthsOff you should track the space station. I never fail to get excited when I see it pass over!! The app is called GoISSWatch

Venus is usually visible (uk) the the lower left side of the moon too 😊

Sorry but I'm afraid that's not the case.

Venus is nowhere near the Moon tonight, it's set already - seen from Earth it's actually pretty much in line with the Sun ATM and so hidden by the Sun's glare.

The Moon and planets all move relative to each other across the sky and also relative the fixed stars. In the case of the Moon the daily movement is quite rapid... it's position with regard to Jupiter will be noticeably differently tomorrow night.

Given the movement the easiest way to really keep track on what is where is with one of the planetarium or star chart apps.

I enjoy using this app to figure out what I'm looking at. Sky & Telescope;

Download the free SkyView lite app!

MummaMeerkat · 04/11/2022 21:01

I feel bad, we saw this at the firework display tonight but I told an excited ds it was an aeroplane. He thought it was a ufo

TrippyLily · 04/11/2022 21:09

It's jupiter. If it twinkles it's a star. If it doesn't it's a planet.

Bluekerfuffle · 04/11/2022 21:21

Thanks for mentioning it, I just had a look, it’s quite stunning.

c3pu · 04/11/2022 21:24

Astronomer here, as others have said it's Jupiter. If you have a pair of binoculars you should be able to spot it's 4 moons!

Here's one of my better pics:

Oh fabulous photos!

TheOtherWoman2 · 04/11/2022 21:29

convenient its just popped up along with musk taking over twitter.

JetBlackSteed · 04/11/2022 21:32

If you are looking directly at Jupiter / moon and facing south, if you turn to your left and face east, you'll see Mars. Shiny non blinking. It's at about the same distance up of the horizon.

get the free app called Night Sky and hold your phone to the sky, and it'll tell you stars and planets and all. Or point at the ground and see what's on the other side 😄

TheOtherWoman2 · 04/11/2022 21:35

I can't believe non of you saw this coming. his whole space x program, its a big cover up for his ties with extra terrestrial life, he has a home very close to Area 51... not that anyone has the brain to put two and two together

GordonShakespearedoesChristmas · 04/11/2022 21:36

Yep Jupiter. We could see it last night.
My daughter saw Mars the other night.
It's awe inspiring isn't it?!

FlipFlopBattle · 04/11/2022 21:37

Couple of other random facts as someone requested them :)

You can sign up with NASA (which some kids think is cool in itself) to get notifications when the international space station is due to pass overhead.

@VirtualAstro tweets about stuff in the night sky in real layman's terms so anyone can understand it.

The sun get more and less active on an 11-year cycle, but has been much more active for the last year than predicted, even though it's not due to peak for another couple of years.

Increased solar activity can in theory affect satellites and electricity grids, but also make the northern lights stronger and visible further South. That's why so many people have seen them from unexpected locations recently. A free app like AuroraWatchUK can alert you when the chances of seeing the northern lights are high.

tapdancingmum · 04/11/2022 21:43

I was just going to mention VirtualAstro on Twitter as he is so good at explaining what you are looking at and when to see it.

We got into stargazing during lockdown and it blew my daughter's mind that there were people on the space station and we could see if flying above us 😀

I have a telescope and need to get it out more and start looking thought it. It is amazing just looking up on a clear night.

What the! This is amazing! I have on my bucket list going to a really dark sky place and hopefully visit somewhere with a really good telescope...until now I'm getting by with my skyview free app!

EndlessMagpies · 04/11/2022 20:32

That's it! The ISS flies at about 250 miles above the Earth's surface so way too high for a plane describes it perfectly!

Sometimes I stand in the garden and wave as it goes over. Blush

I'm glad it's not just me Grin On occasion kisses may have been blown and glasses raised.

Oh wow, I thought it was just a star!

Wow.
Same here.

I thought it was a bright star

Floydthedemonbarber · 04/11/2022 22:04

I looked through a friend's telescope once while it was pointed at Saturn. The rings were visible, it was beautiful.

SwordToFlamethrower · 04/11/2022 22:05

Tis Jupiter

CPL593H · 04/11/2022 22:06

@FlipFlopBattle sorry, missed that you'd posted the link

BringOnAutumn · 04/11/2022 22:26

Definitely have a look through binoculars. The moons are like points of light. Watch them over several days and you can see them change position.

Jupiter and the Moon tonight are spectacular as the sky is so clear in my part of the world.
PS : the Stellarium app is worth downloading!
