Venus is usually visible (uk) the the lower left side of the moon too 😊

EndlessMagpies · 04/11/2022 20:05

If there was anyone standing on Jupiter right now, they might be gazing up at the sky and thinking "What's that tiny blue dot in the sky over there?"

Thanks for that, I now have very excited dc! It’s beautifully clear here.

PatriciaHolm · 04/11/2022 20:07

Oh sorry @TwoMonthsOff I I didn't mean to imply it wasn't amazing! I thought you were suggesting it wasn't Jupiter! It's fab when the clouds clear isn't it.

TwoMonthsOff · 04/11/2022 20:07

@EndlessMagpies thats a lovely thought ….

If you can get a telescope you can see the stripes on Jupiter.
DS1 took this photo with his telescope a couple of weeks ago!

TwoMonthsOff · 04/11/2022 20:10

@PatriciaHolm no worries 🥰I was so excited and looked it up and wanted to check with more informed people, it has made my day to be honest, puts it all into perspective doesn’t it

It’s not ‘just;’ jupiter to me I don’t see planets every day in fact I think this is my first time

You do. It’s very common for Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn to be visible in the sky.

EndlessMagpies · 04/11/2022 20:13

When I was a kid my dad had a telescope, and I can remember being quite small and looking through his telescope at Saturn's rings. He also woke me up in the middle of the night once, so I could watch the first moon landing live on television. I was only 7 and I think I was too tired to be impressed by all the blurry black and white pictures!!

We just popped outside to have a look too :D

I think that the OP means that it is the first time she has found out that it was a planet up there that she was looking at, and not some random star.

EndlessMagpies · 04/11/2022 20:19

There are some good documentaries by Professor Brian Cox, if you want to find out some more, @TwoMonthsOff

There's one series called "The Wonders of the Universe" and you will be awestruck.

We've just been stood in the garden as a result of this thread. This is why I love mumsnet - every day is a school day.

Whyisitdarkalready · 04/11/2022 20:25

If it looks like a star but it isn't twinkling like the other stars, then chances are it's a planet. But I'd recommend using an app and it'll tell you exactly what you're looking at.

EndlessMagpies · 04/11/2022 19:52

They're up there quite often, most usually Venus and Mars.

Sometimes you can even see the International Space Station flying past. That looks like a star, but travelling fast from west to east, like a plane but much higher up. It circumnavigates the Earth every 90 minutes. Best time to see it is after sunset or before dawn - you might be lucky and see it low down in the sky around 4.59 tomorrow morning if the sky is clear.

You can search on 'where is the International Space Station?' and there are several websites that track its exact location.

Thank you !! I have on occasion now seen a star moving across the sky when I've looked straight up above me, Dp said it'll be a plane but it's way too high, I did wonder if it was the iss

TwoMonthsOff · 04/11/2022 20:26

Sadly we have some annoying little clouds here at the moment as I’ve just messaged my sister, she’s disappointed, it’s been a lovely night seeing that it’s made me think

Thanks OP for this thread. I’ve just impressed the DC with my new found knowledge!

Zippedydoo123 · 04/11/2022 20:29

This is fascinating. Can we have this thread running with lots of information to soak up please would luv to learn all of this!

FadedRed · 04/11/2022 19:53

You can download an app called Star Chart for free and it will tell you what you can see in the heavens. You just point your phone/device at the bit of sky you are looking at and you will get a map of all the stars/planets/some satellites etc. The bright thing you can see just above the moon is Jupiter.

Thanks!! @FadedRed that's really fab :)

That's it! The ISS flies at about 250 miles above the Earth's surface so way too high for a plane describes it perfectly!

Sometimes I stand in the garden and wave as it goes over. Blush

@Changingmynameyetagain stunning photo your DS took

Sometimes you can see the ISS on Xmas eve, so you can tell the kids that it is Father Christmas flying over and so it's time for bed! Use the ISS tracker and it'll tell you times to look and even which direction. It's a smooth travelling white light that doesn't deviate its path.

My dad was an amateur astronomer. We used to stay out in the garden all night stargazing.

DD has always adored the ISS. She was about 3 when “they” started pretending it was Santa on Xmas eve and I couldn’t let her outside as she would definitely have told neighbouring children that it absolutely wasn’t. 😂

Please don’t. The Santa shit takes over the whole of December. Please let us non-Santa ISS fans have that.

Despite a life rich in the wonders of the universe his live shows have blown my mind TWICE.
