How long did your recent visit to A&E take?

I’ve got a friend who went to A&E last night at 9pm, and walked out 9 hours after only having bloods done and no follow up.

it got me thinking, is this the norm for A&E on a normal Tuesday night or is our area just tragically understaffed and long wait times.

if you’ve recently visited A&E how long did you have to wait?

I went to minor injuries in August and was told I needed A&E. When I got to A&E I was sent to ambulatory care and was seen and home in 4 hours.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/11/2022 16:49

On Monday night, 8 hours with chest pain and breathlessness. A couple
of hours before I was even triaged.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/11/2022 17:32

Broken leg

2.5 hour wait for an ambulance (was a private ambulance company as no regional/nhs ambulance available)
15 minute journey
45 minute wait in ambulance outside hospital
30 minute wait on hospital wheelchair (no trollies available so broken leg propped up on pillows)
30 minutes in cubicles awaiting x-ray
15 minutes in x-ray
15 minutes back in cubicles
60 minutes in resus due to complicated fracture and meds needed to effect a temporary set and plaster
Up to assessment unit, pending surgery the following day.
2 hours in surgery and recovery room
Returned to assessment unit.
Never made it to a "proper " ward as hospital was full, so remained in assessment unit for 3 days.

11 months ago, in the back of an ambulance with DD after a serious RTA.

She was treated at the scene - in the ambulance - for an hour, which was I suspect because A and E was busy.

Arriving at hospital she was in resus within seconds, had full X-rays, ultrasounds, cat scan and treatment and discharged within seven hours.

absolutely excellence service and treatment.

About 5 months ago I had horrific food poisoning, I was vommiting constantly for about 10 hours, it also triggered my chronic back pain so I could hardly walk. I was in the waiting room for about half an hour, I couldn't even hold my head up they came and took my.blood pressure in the waiting room, I must have looked grim as they took me to a bed pretty quick to try and stop the vommiting. I was then there for about 7 hours, it took ages on drips etc.

Other times I've taken my baby we were there for about 5 hours.

44 hours on space on a floor in a staff room with some blankets on it.

Severe head & chest injury (assault) - it took 20 plus hours to get a CT scan.

Jesus this is shocking

ObsidianBlizzard · 02/11/2022 17:40

@BryceQuinlanTheFirst the staff were brilliant, they were the saving graces to the entire situation - it was clear there was nothing more they could do. There were people in the A and E waiting room who had been waiting 24 hours plus for a CT scan.

been and done it. · 02/11/2022 17:41

7 hours after being sent for an emergency 4.30 appointment- was eventually seen gone 11pm..only one eye doctor working the other was in theatre due to an emergency and the other had gone home early.

Untitledsquatboulder · 02/11/2022 17:43

Last Christmas ds1 blue lighted to hospital in anaphylaxis: no wait time, straight to resus.

Beginning of October w ds2 Sat night: 5 hours til he was first seen, then another 3 w xray and bloods after which he was admitted to the ward.

Both times was A&E at local Children's Hospital. So really I have no complaint although the 5 hour wait was rough on ds2.

JustDanceAddict · 02/11/2022 17:45

5 hours at 4am in August. Had tests, that was the wait for results/to see a Dr. They nurse taking bloods said it was ‘quiet night’. As we were leaving it was getting much busier.

Untitledsquatboulder · 02/11/2022 17:45

@TicketToRideFan it's normal for paramedics to try and stabilise the patient (if they can) before heading to a&e.

TheWolves · 02/11/2022 17:47

I've been a few times. I'd say I'd been waiting at least nine hours on average. On the floor, sometimes because there's nowhere to sit. Which is fabulous when you are severely dehydrated and vomiting every few seconds.

Thank you, I definitely didn’t object; I just wondered if it it was a practical solution, given just how quickly she was seen at hospital.

there were genuine concerns she had some pretty serious injuries, so I am sure that expedited treatment too.

DwightShrutesgirlfriend · 02/11/2022 17:47

12 hours and then 4 days on ward, nil by mouth, until a space in theatre came up for appendix to be removed.

Hubblebubbledays · 02/11/2022 17:48

Was sent to ward with my child suspected appencitis, had to wait 7 Hours for anyone to come and see us, no bed, and child in agony. No water, no pain killers and tbh appendix could have burst and they wouldn’t have known. I am so shocked that this is what’s happening to our nhs where a child is left like that, and supposed to be seen “urgently”. The pain is still there but not as severe 10 days on- unable to get a gp appointment to follow up, out of hours made me ring 111 at the weekend to book an appointment and they were supposed to ring me back to arrange an appointment, I still haven’t heard back! I did this on Saturday and Sunday. I considered going to A and E today but our local hospital has a 16 hour wait currently.

Adhdsucks · 02/11/2022 17:50

OOH GP sent me to A&E, he phoned them to tell them I was coming. I got there at about 10pm and was admitted to the ward by 1am.

NorthernSoul55 · 02/11/2022 17:50

14 hours with a 5 week old baby, subsequently admitted for 4 further nights. Weekday evening.

disconnecteddrifter · 02/11/2022 17:54

Luckily when we've been in in an emergency we are seen before triage. When I haemorrhaged and another time when my son had meningitis and unconscious. Had to drive though as couldn't get an ambulance.
When been in for broken bones it's been hours to get xray, hours to get results and hours to get treatment. The NHS is on its arse and doesn't look likely to get fair funding to improve staffing under this government at least.

LondonWolf · 02/11/2022 17:54

Last time I went was about midnight on a Saturday. I was having chest pains. An ambulance came within 8 minutes and took me in. Had to take my teens with me as they're autistic. On arrival I explained this and was seen very quickly. I had to stay under observation - chest pains etc - after about two hours a very tired looking doctor came in and checked the monitor I was hooked up to. He said my children could go home as it might be a while, I explained again that they couldn't and he said "Ah, ok, let me see what I can do", I went for another test, can't remember what, they took bloods and he was back after an hour explaining the results and telling me I hadn't had a heart attack, which I was terrified of, because the tests I had had done should show certain results to indicate that and they showed no sign. He said it was almost certainly a panic attack and he took the time to sit with me and explain and reassure me about it. We were out by 5 am. This was a busy London A&E. They were brilliant actually.

Tomliboosrule · 02/11/2022 17:57

5 hour wait for the ambulance to arrive, 2 1/2 outside a&e before being moved into the ambulance triage area, stayed in the triage area for 13 hours while being treated for multiple broken bones and stitches. Didn’t make it into the main A&E area as there weren’t any beds. 18 ambulances queuing outside.

9753124680x · 02/11/2022 17:59

Recently blue lighted to A+E with asthma attack, taken immediately into resus & given drugs etc immediately to stabilise. Waited about 6hrs for a bed on ward, admitted for 2 days.

dottyrobin · 02/11/2022 18:00

I went in June worth a dislocated knee which wouldn't go back in and my leg was sticking out at a right angle.
I didn't even see the waiting room and got wheeled straight into a bay. Knee relocated, xrays and all clear to leave in under an hour.

Originally called ambulance but got advised the wait was 11 hours so I made my own way to a&e

luckylavender · 02/11/2022 18:00

Missing the point but surely most people hardly ever go to A&E?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/11/2022 18:02

Wednesday pm about a month ago.
DS(14) passed out at school, threw up and was confused, slurring his words and making no sense when he came round.

We were in A&E about 2.5 hours. About 1.5 hrs waiting, I hr exam, ecg, blood sugar test, standard obs etc.

Superb service from Barnsley Paediatric A&E.

Percypigfanatic · 02/11/2022 18:09

6 hour wait (and possibly more) after son (8) fainted and hit his head at school, told to go straight to hospital - emergency childrens unit as was very pale and feeling dizzy/sick. Weekday evening. Was there from 1-7pm and left / discharged ourselves as no sign of a doctor and son was bored and hungry. There were a couple of children that looked like they should have been in minor injuries (bandage on hand, another had shut his hand in a door) but there were other children throwing up and passing out and none of them seemed to have priority and had been there longer than us. I was absolutely disgusted - the NHS is on its knees and an absolute shambles. I really hope no one I know falls seriously ill is all I can say
