Do you answer withheld calls

I hate having withheld calls, I sometimes miss them and then spend all day wondering who has tried to call me.
does anyone ever answer them?

Never. I have no desire to talk to someone I don't recognise.
If a number is visible, I still won't answer it but I might Google afterwards and then I can decide to block it.

I am very old, and I have never been phoned by a hospital or medical person, so that's irrelevant.

Mind you, all this is somewhat academic because my phone is always on silent, so I won't usually know I've had a call until sometime later..... and THEN I block the number 😂

heidbuttsupper · 01/11/2022 19:44

No and I don't answer my door either Grin

You must count yourself very lucky if that's the case.

Delatron · 01/11/2022 19:48

I don’t answer any number I don’t recognise let alone a withheld one.

I don’t really like answering the door but have to these days due to all the deliveries. I wouldn’t answer the door in the evening (but would see who it was on the Arlo camera). I am peak Mumsnet right now. Though I do have a loo brush so maybe not..

Yes because unfortunately they make me nervous. It's either social services (or whoever you call first point of contact) because someone has made numerous malicious allegations of abuse/neglect of me to my child.
Or it's the police about the harassment case!

What life do you live that you expect this?!

maggiso · 01/11/2022 19:50

NHS calls are always from withheld numbers.

1001Daffodils · 01/11/2022 19:52

Yes, I have no qualms about hanging up on people I don't want to speak to.

I'd rather answer the phone and deal with whatever is going to hit me than deal with the anxiety of not knowing if I've missed something important...because the serious stuff never gets left on voicemail.

Scammers rarely use withheld numbers in my experience, they hide behind ordinary landline spoofs or company spoofs.

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2022 19:54

I've never had any phone fear. It was the only method of communication growing up, and every job I have had has involved making or taking calls.

You do know that not having been called by a hospital in the past doesn't mean you'll never get a call in the future, right?

Unless you don't have any family there's always the possibility that someone might enup in a & e

Oh yes, the HMRC have a warrant out for my arrest apparently and the number they used to send me the recorded message to tell me somehow does come up as HMRC.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 01/11/2022 20:00

Never as it's usually my ex who changes his number every month or withholds it just so I pick up. He either gives me abuse or spouts a load of shite. He likes to call from withheld because he knows that I have no proof it was him

kittykutty · 01/11/2022 20:07

Blimey, is there any need to be so rude? It seems pretty clear that PP is being harassed by someone who has made malicious reportsHmm

MissMarplesNiece · 01/11/2022 20:20

No, unless I'm expecting the call.

Suzi888 · 01/11/2022 20:21

Yes, it’s usually very important. I don’t look, I’m always fumbling so just answer it 😂

orangeisthenewpuce · 01/11/2022 20:22

No. I don't answer any calls from numbers I don't know.

Kpo58 · 01/11/2022 20:31

I would have thought that most withheld numbers are from people who have to phone from their own mobiles rather than an office phone as they normally work at home (and their work is too cheap to give them an official phone) and they don't want members of the public phoning them back on their private number.

Soapboxqueen · 01/11/2022 20:32

Yes always.

Lots of schools, hospitals, appointment Reminders, energy companies, councils etc use phone systems that come up at number private or withheld because they are on a network.

Some give a number but its the main switchboard.

Good luck trying to call back

SE13Mummy · 01/11/2022 20:32

My phone filters out calls from withheld numbers so if ever I'm expecting to be contacted by the hospital or similar, I make sure that info is on file and that it's noted I'm happy for them to leave a message. It means they tend to call from what comes up as the switchboard number or if that's not an option, they email instead.

The reason my phone is set up like this is because DC1 had a group of primary friends that got into making prank calls and withholding numbers. It was years ago now but after receiving a few of the calls, it was just easier to be in a position where that couldn't happen.

userxx · 01/11/2022 20:37

No, unless you're in my contact list it goes straight to answer phone.

Flaunch · 01/11/2022 20:50

No. I’ve filtered them out so my phone doesn’t even ring.

carefulcalculator · 01/11/2022 20:57

Not unless I am expecting a call e.g. the Dr.

School number shows up.

Unfortunately the NHS doesn't leave messages-they aren't allowed.

My mom has a lot of calls from the hospital about her health issues and her nurse always leaves her a message if she doesn’t answer

OP posts:
alloalloallo · 01/11/2022 21:03

Yes.

My daughter has a number of health issues and is having lots of tests and stuff at the moment - most NHS/CAMHS/hospital/college/etc calls come from a withheld number

As a PP says, most scam calls seem to come from spoofed landline numbers these days anyway.

RuthW · 01/11/2022 21:03

No never. I don't answer any number I don't know. If it's urgent they will leave a message.
