Heavy palpitations at night when trying to sleep, what the hell is that about?

WTFisthishit · 31/10/2022 01:52

I've had to get up and come downstairs after three hours of heavy palpitations, adrenaline surges snd accompanied dizziness coming and going as I'm laid down trying to go to sleep.

It has happened a few times before which I brushed off but never to this extent.

I have a GP appointment for something unrelated next week so I'll be raising it then but has anybody experienced similar and knows what caused it?

I'm late 20's so not menopausal, not pregnant, not anxious (well I wasn't until this!) 😐

Anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder.

I don't suffer from an anxiety disorder. No significant stress in my life. Nothing in particular to worry about. I've been perfectly fine all day until I went to bed 😐

Could it be something simple like too much caffeine or nicotine patches? Both of these have given me similar in the past

That's interesting as I happened to have a cup of caffeinated tea this evening at about 7ish, I usually always have decaffe..

Get it checked out.

hashbrownsandwich · 31/10/2022 02:18

Tell the GP. They'll likely do an ECG and advise cutting down/out on alcohol, caffeine. They may also talk about sleep hygiene.

Do you get this at any other time ie when awake during day? Are you on any other medication?

Somatronic · 31/10/2022 02:20

It could be an overactive thyroid gland. Worth getting TSH and T4 checked.

happyharpy78 · 31/10/2022 02:21

I get this if I have had a meal with MSG in it

That amount won’t do that.
do you get adequate nutrition. Eating disorder.
not been taking too many pain medication?
ever struggled with potassium

Fraaahnces · 31/10/2022 03:35

It could be low blood pressure. When you lie down, it increases your heart rate. It could be atrial fibrillation. I would recommend discussing this with your GP who might want you to wear a Holter monitor for 24 hours and see what your heart is up to.

Xenapo · 31/10/2022 03:51

Get checked for mthfr gene. Your b vitamins may be low

columbo83 · 31/10/2022 03:53

I had this after every Covid jab. Settled after a few weeks. Have you recently had a booster

feindVicarInATutu · 31/10/2022 03:56

I never thought I had any anxiety issues yet just about to fall asleep I'd get palpitations , hyperventilating, heart beating like it would burst out of chest .
Was panic attacks. Apparently very common right when you're very relaxed and about to sleep .
Recently had more palpitations, had an ecg and blood test and alls well so I'm putting it down to menopause this time

Jifmicroliquid · 31/10/2022 06:28

I have recently been suffering from heart palpitations, but noticed it was only when sitting or lying. When I straighten myself out, they stop. A bit of curious googling and I think I may have been compressing my vagus nerve.
Could you have the same problem perhaps?

Moonmelodies · 31/10/2022 07:40

Have you had any Covid vaccinations?

lljkk · 31/10/2022 07:52

Caffeine makes my heart go funny.

blackheartsgirl · 31/10/2022 07:56

You do need it checked out.

I had the same, had it for years and suddenly got worse.

had tests and I have a problem with the electrical function in my heart and I’m now due an op for either ablation or pacemaker

could be something or nothing. But you need to get checked.

Afterfire · 31/10/2022 07:57

I had this when my anaemia was very bad. You need some blood tests.

Purplepeople12 · 31/10/2022 08:30

I have this, it beats normally, then it feels like it stops, then it bangs so hard it makes me.cough. It drives me up the wall as it always starts when I'm just starting to relax, I'm almost scared to breathe out as that's when I feel it most. I also get them during the day. My heart rate is naturally fast though and I have low BP, also an anxiety disorder I've had all my life. So certainly get it checked out, it's not always something serious but those things do need ruling out

justasking111 · 31/10/2022 08:41

Please get checked out. Email your GP so they're aware in advance

Newgirls · 31/10/2022 08:48

Anemia? Are you veggie/vegan and getting enough iron?

WTFisthishit · 31/10/2022 09:05

Thank you all for replying.

I finally managed to get to sleep at around 3am.

I'm not anemic as far as I'm aware but might be worth ruling it out with a blood test, not vegan or veggie, also no to eating disorders as I eat well (I'm a few lbs overweight if anything)

I've had 3 covid jabs but quite some time ago now. I haven't had the most recent booster.

The first time this happened back in June/July time I had just gotten over covid for the second time and was aware that covid could cause some cardiac symptoms so I put it down to covid. I definitely don't have covid now.

Feeling a bit uneasy and out of sorts today (uneasy as a direct result of this, no history of anxiety or panic attacks)

I went out to eat yesterday pretty late on in the afternoon, about 6.30. A beef roast followed by sticky toffee pudding. Would that have MSG in?

Iv had palpitations on and off since teenage years. Dr said it was just one of those things and a lot of people get it but that they would need to catch it when it happens to monitor which isn't often.

I mostly get it after a large meal particularly when Iv been to a restaurant and eat a lot more as you did. I think you should go to your gp though.
