When was the last time you bought a magazine?

I've realised I haven't bought a magazine for a few years now! I used to buy OK! magazine every week and Red every month, plus the odd one here and there and I'd often read one in the bath.

My teens don't ever buy them whereas when I was a teen I loved Smash Hits, Top of the pops, More(!) magazine!

I'm wondering if the traditional magazine is dying out and will soon become a thing of the past?

Private Eye a month or two ago.
I have also had knitting magazines passed on to me by friends. They cost as much as a book so it feels extravagant to read one and then throw it away.
They are definitely in decline but not dead yet.

Redwineandroses · 30/10/2022 12:41

Ah yes I forgot about the craft ones. I wonder if they still sell those ones where you collect something every week from to create something, they usually went on for months and most people lost interest!

Last month. I like the house and garden type ones as the articles have more substance than the online ones, and I buy the children's ones for DS (Thomas the Tank Engine, Number Blocks etc) for the activities, stickers and toys. Never was into the sloshy gossip ones.

Last time I flew somewhere, I thought I'd treat myself to a magazine in the airport. But I couldn't find anything that looked good :(

hiredandsqueak · 30/10/2022 12:46

Ages ago now, my eyesight is awful so I struggle to read them but listen to audiobooks and read on my Kindle every day. I sometimes pick up a magazine for dgs as he like the plastic tat on the front.

Medoca · 30/10/2022 12:46

I think people find them very wasteful now environmentally. Especially as you can most on kindle or computer.

Echobelly · 30/10/2022 12:47

I buy women's or interiors magazines every month or so I think. Sometimes when I have a, quiet day I like to have one to read, and when going on holiday.

I think magazines for teens are pretty much over, it's always going up be social media first now. I remember those mags well and the problem pages - always you'd get poor girls describing how their 'best friend/s' were actually totally horrible to them or those ones believing you couldn't get pregnant if you drunk Coke and jumped up and down afterwards....

Oh yeah the problem pages!

I get the print Psychology Now. I think it’s only 2-3 issues a year.

minipie · 30/10/2022 12:54

I think I bought a couple of wedding magazines back in 2009.

I like Stylist magazine but it’s free.

I do buy subscription magazines for the kids (Nat Geo, The Week Jr etc) not sure if that counts.

Sparklingbrook · 30/10/2022 12:54

I bought one a few months ago and it was something like £5.99 Shock Flicked through it, loads of adverts, not a lot to read and passed it on.
My Mother has Woman's Own still. I also had Smash Hits delivered every week and devoured Jackie, Blue Jeans and Patches.

Also I am quite surprised that people still want an actual newspaper.

Baldieheid · 30/10/2022 12:54

I just bought a copy of "Breathe" magazine, which I've never seen before. Other than that, it's been years. Most of the fashion mags seem to be adverts now, from a quick flick through today.

SierraSapphire · 30/10/2022 12:55

I read them on the library app for free. Huge selection.

Vampirethriller · 30/10/2022 12:55

I bought That's Life on Tuesday.

SealSquish · 30/10/2022 12:56

Years and years - but my mum did buy good housekeeping Christmassy magazine which I read the other day.

I do read some on Libby occasionally, mainly good food magazine. Definitely worth getting a library card for Libby if you don’t have one already

Anjo2011 · 30/10/2022 12:57

I brought 3 when I went on holiday in August, didn’t read any of them.

Pourmeanotherwine · 30/10/2022 12:57

Probably a new scientist or a private eye for a long train journey - cant remember when but would have been pre Covid when more meetings were in person so i was on trains more.

MovingOnUpp · 30/10/2022 13:01

I buy Heat every week, the TV bit works well for me. I’ve tried all the TV guides but the way they do the top 20 suggestions which includes cinema films is really good.

AnApparitionQuipped · 30/10/2022 13:02

We have a Private Eye subscription.

I think the last time I bought one in a shop was when I was going into hospital for an operation about six years ago - I bought a National Geographic, and a couple of interior decor magazines. I gave them to the woman who'd just arrived on the next bed when I was discharged.

Elphame · 30/10/2022 13:05

Many years ago and it would have been a craft one.

My Lloyds bank account comes with a free subscription to a magazine of my choice and I'm not tempted by any of them. Same with Kindle Unlimited. The choice is dire.

LoobyDop · 30/10/2022 13:08

I usually get one to read on the plane when I go on holiday, but never apart from that any more. There’s never anything new in them. 1970s Love Story retro every autumn, jewel-toned velvet at Christmas, florals for spring/summer. A few articles about networking and being a boss babe, a few more about someone’s health/family tragedy, some stuff about masturbation/S&M/the brave and stunning and then a few motivational mental health things. There’s no need to spend a fiver when the content is so utterly predictable.

cookiecreammmpie · 30/10/2022 13:12

I like reading Take Break and That's Life. I probably sound about 90 but I like reading them in bed and doing the crosswords.

icebearforpresident · 30/10/2022 13:37

I buy the kids one occasionally, usually as a bribe for something, but for myself it was probably a copy of BBC Good Food at Xmas for the recipe on the cover.

Redwineandroses · 30/10/2022 15:24

Most celeb twaddle is old news now by the time it comes out in magazines. I recall buying Heat magazine during the 00s but then stopped as the celebs in it became less and less familiar to me. I also recall their "circle of shame" which was where they'd circle someone's body part to showcase cellulite or fat bits! So mean!
