When was the last time you bought a magazine?

I've realised I haven't bought a magazine for a few years now! I used to buy OK! magazine every week and Red every month, plus the odd one here and there and I'd often read one in the bath.

My teens don't ever buy them whereas when I was a teen I loved Smash Hits, Top of the pops, More(!) magazine!

I'm wondering if the traditional magazine is dying out and will soon become a thing of the past?

Last Christmas! I like to curl up with a Christmas magazine in late November/ early December, but that’s it.

Fairylightsongs · 30/10/2022 17:49

At least a decade. I used to my cosmo every month then red but it just became monotonous rubbish so I stopped. I read everything on line now.

pastabest · 30/10/2022 17:52

Private eye subscription
a monthly subscription to one of the dressmaking magazines - the ones you get a couple of free patterns with
CBeebies and my little pony magazines sporadically
the local 'life' glossy magazine every month

every now and then I'll get a take a break or heat magazine for DH who has loved them ever since he used to read his sisters but would never in a jillion years buy one for himself. He devours them Grin

Private Eye - have a sub, worth every penny and not available online.
I'm an RHS member so their monthly magazine comes with the annual sub.
I occasionally read the Economist, New Scientist or a home decor magazine but they are all on line now.

Waitrose/Ocado both give their magazines free with a shopping order so I get those, I usually pass them on.

Otherwise I might pick something up at an airport or to take to someone ill at home.

Like you OP I remember happily reading teenage magazines and the problem pages (Cathy and Claire anyone?).

Daisy62 · 30/10/2022 17:56

I read them at the hairdressers, get them from the library (especially if going on hols) and occasionally read them on library app. Used to like that feeling of a glossy magazine every month but no longer want to pay for them, too expensive.

I buy a magazine with the Christmas tv listings every year just out of tradition really but can’t remember the last time I bought a different magazine

A580Hojas · 30/10/2022 18:09

The last magazine I bought was a tribute edition to David Bowie when he died. So what's that ... 6 years ago now?

And I hadn't bought any for years before that. Infact I think the last time I actually properly read a magazine was when I was in hospital with my newborn DD for 5 days ... 2001.

Sparklingbrook · 30/10/2022 18:24

My parents are in their 80s and have had the Radio Times for as long as I have known. My Nan had a leather binder thing that she put hers in.
I used to buy it at Christmas but don't bother now.

Seems from a lot of these posts that magazines tend to appear when there's illness.

Just like this one

When was the last time you bought a magazine?
SwedishEdith · 30/10/2022 18:27

I have a Private Eye subscription. Don't get a chance to always read it but it's pretty cheap so don't mind keeping it going.
Bought a Vogue annual subscription for my older teen's birthday once - you can get really reasonable offers for that and she loved getting it through the post each month.

shinynewapple22 · 30/10/2022 18:42

Up until a few years back I used to buy one of the glossy monthlies each week. I realised at some point I was just sitting flicking through them and replaced with a new paperback - or sometimes just going to the library .

The only magazine I read now is Take a Break for the competitions .

YorkieTheRabbit · 30/10/2022 18:49

I bought Good Housekeeping last week. I used to have a subscription but stopped renewing it a few years ago as it was getting very repetitious.
I fancied getting the December edition but ended up with the Christmas one by mistake, which is basically just recipes. It cost £6.99 😱
It will be a long time before I buy another

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 30/10/2022 18:52

I buy a magazine called Breathe once a month

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/10/2022 18:56

I bought crime monthly a couple of months ago. I used to get Marie Claire and cosmopolitan but never got round to reading them

cobblers123 · 30/10/2022 19:03

Several years ago, they were home decor ones and gardening magazines. Bought Gardener's World to take into hospital and decided to buy it on subscription so get that every month now.

Wishimaywishimight · 30/10/2022 19:14

Today - the Good Housekeeping Christmas issue 😃

Changingmynameyetagain · 30/10/2022 19:18

I used to, I regularly bought Cosmo occasionally Red and the odd Vogue.
I also used to buy kitchen Garden and a knitting magazine but I realised what a colossal waste of money they were so I stopped.buying them.

I flicked through Cosmo in Tesco the other day and it was essentially adverts, didn’t bother to buy it.

StaceySolomonSwash · 30/10/2022 19:25

I buy a magazine if we're going on holiday so I can flick through it on the flight. Can't settle with a book but a mag is fine.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 30/10/2022 19:29

Do comics count? I get the kids an annual subscription to the Beano as a xmas pressy every year. It is worth every penny as the kids love it, it's brilliant! Got us through covid it's arrival every week was a bright spot.

Mogginsthemog · 30/10/2022 19:32

The Xmas Good Housekeeping, last year.

I think years ago Cosmopolitan has much more content, including short stories.

indigoemerald · 30/10/2022 19:34

I have a monthly subscription to one of the Puzzler magazines, I haven’t bought a “non puzzle” magazine for a very long time though!

Redwineandroses · 30/10/2022 19:57

Private Eye seems to be a popular choice on this thread! Is it any good? I've never read it.

OP posts:
PermanentTemporary · 30/10/2022 21:07

@Redwineandroses yes and no. It's so structured and full of running jokes that it can be nearly unreadable. It's had some punchlines that have been going since about 1972. If you're familiar with them it gives you a cosy sense of belonging.

But it also has some genuine scoops from time to time, and writes in somewhat skewed detail about scandals in things like local government and agricultural policy that these days are simply ignored in most newspapers in favour of political gossip. I'm glad it exists. Oh and the cartoons are fantastic. I usually laugh out loud several times whdn reading it.

Fishlegs · 30/10/2022 21:10

I also get Private Eye sporadically, and have just subscribed to a football and pony magazines for the dc as they’ll read those (but not books 😭).

Fishlegs · 30/10/2022 21:11

Sorry, superfluous ‘a’ there.
