Why would you do this to your child?

Call it Maximilian and spell it Maksymilian?

I know (but don’t understand) that people want something youneek, but this is one of the worst that I’ve come across(in real life).
is it shortened to Maks?

What an odd and ignorant post. My DS has a lovely friend by that name. He’s always been known as Max, but I always loved his name. He never received any flak from any of the kids (perhaps because all the families were educated, international and open-minded?).

lljkk · 29/10/2022 22:28

I quite like Maks.

CoopersChase · 29/10/2022 22:31

I’d ask for this to be taken down if I were you OP.

RisingSunn · 29/10/2022 22:33

😒

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/10/2022 22:35

Hmmm. No apology OP?

Obviously racist….married to a foreigner, with a non British passport myself. I could spend hours daily googling the names I come across. I didn’t. I stand corrected. I’m not sure being rude and abusive makes those posting such messages any better than the original post.

People of all nationalities can be ignorant bigots.

Obia · 29/10/2022 22:55

Well that didn't go to plan @Trainfromredhill

Trainfromredhill · 29/10/2022 23:00

@Obia.life generally doesn’t go to plan. I learnt something new. So that’s a good thing. I’ll be better informed next time. Thank you MN.

How anyone has got to adulthood, in a very multicultural society, entirely bypassing the concept that names have different forms and spellings, is quite astonishing.

Elizabeth and Isabelle, for example, are different forms of the same name. John and Ian is another example. Yousef and Joseph another.

MoneyMeAndAdhd · 29/10/2022 23:14

I think there are some quite disingenuous posts on here. OP made a mistake in thinking it was a ‘youneek’ spelling and has said she’s learnt from this thread.

However, mumsnet is often mocking ‘youneek’ and ‘made up’ spellings of names, calling them chavvy (which is a horrible word!)
So although OP was not correct in this thread, I think everyone knows that if she had said a different name with a ‘made up’ spelling, people would have been jumping on the thread to encourage mocking ‘chavvy’ names.

It doesn’t mean OP is racist, it means MN is a place where mocking unusual names is ok as long the names are chavvy and not foreign.

It’s double standards - we shouldn’t be mocking any children’s names.

User19956 · 29/10/2022 23:33

Youneek

100% this. Never has a post summed up a whole thread as well as this post.

I know a family who’s son is called Lucky.

Regardless of whether it’s a suitable name or not, it would worry me if the child wasn’t actually lucky in life.

What if he’s sitting there one day, age 35 and reflecting on his failed marriages, losing his job, going bald and tripping over his black cat and breaking both his legs.

Will he change his name to Unlucky?

Or maybe he's Indian?

BobbyBobbyBobby · 29/10/2022 23:43

I was being lighthearted so that the op didn’t feel so bad.

BloodAndFire · 29/10/2022 23:44

@Trainfromredhill a few days ago on another thread, you said you are 'an A&E doctor'.

I find it very difficult to believe that someone who apparently works in an environment where you're constantly meeting new people from all backgrounds would be so ignorant of the concept that foreign names are sometimes spelled differently.

CarefreeMe · 29/10/2022 23:56

Lesson learned.

Never judge unless you know the full details.

Well done for taking it on the chin.

That's not being "lighthearted". It's taking the piss out of another culture aka racist.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 30/10/2022 00:14

LIve and learn I suppose. One of my DC has a Gaelic spelling of their name (we are Scots/ Irish) constantly being mispelled or mispronounced. DC went on holiday to Dublin and was very impreseed to find toys/ keyring with name on at those random stands you get.

I

pinkpotatoez · 30/10/2022 00:38

Mumsnet always have something to say if a child isn't named Emily or Noah. Parents get to decide what their child is called, sometimes it won't be to your liking, luckily for you you can name your own child Emily Smith to ensure they have an amazing career ahead 😊

SemperIdem · 30/10/2022 00:48

@pinkpotatoez there is a large difference between naming your child Katarzyna rather than Catherine because you’re Eastern European, and naming your child Lexiibelle because you’re intellectually barren.

^ this 👏 👏 👏

Meadowbreeze · 30/10/2022 01:21

It always makes me laugh that an Italian, Spanish or German way of spelling would never get called ridiculous, some even go out of their way to use names from those countries. It's also hilarious to me that the j in polish names is never really questioned as thats the Scandinavian way too, so it's ok. The only thing that's ever offended me is not people mispronouncing my name, it's the internalised racism towards Eastern Europeans. You'd never get away with criticising someone for calling their child anoushka and saying it's ridiculous as they're growing up in the UK. For some reason when it comes to white eastern Europeans it's a free pass.

I’m not that surprised, I must say. The attitudes found here on baby name threads are telling.

As I said, you name your child what you want & let others do the same. If the name is a huge problem for the child they can change it later in life. Why bother getting your knickers in a twist about someone else's child's name? Just judge in your head 😂

AlwaysLatte · 30/10/2022 01:00

Such an ignorant post. Why not do a quick Google before ranting on a forum about a perfectly legitimate name.
