I'm feeling confused, after an uncomfortable restaurant experience. 🤔

My adult daughter & I were in London yesterday, to see a show. We popped into a pizza restaurant beforehand, and all started well. We were shown to a table by a lovely girl, who introduced us to her colleague, the waiter who'd be serving our table.

He gave us our menus and then reappeared, to take our order. We ordered our pizzas and drinks (politely, we thought)! He took our order, then just stood staring at us, before shaking his head and walking away. He then silently brought our food & drinks, we thanked him and he stared again, shrugged and went back to the kitchen.

While eating, my dd pointed out to me a lovely mural by the bar, made up of West End musical titles, entwined with Lindin Tube stations and famous lines from songs. We looked across, admiring it. At that point a stony-faced waitress came over, saying we seemed to be staring at her and was there something we wanted!😲 I said absolutely not, we were admiring the mural behind her! She 'eyerolled', and went back to the bar.

We were toying with having dessert, but felt uncomfortable with the atmosphere by then and asked (again politely) for the bill, thinking we'd get ice-cream in the theatre instead!

Our waiter brought the bill over, I paid by card (I wouldn't have tipped but it was included in the bill anyway). He gave me the receipt and just stood again, as if he was waiting for something! I didn't feel comfortable complaining, so just said the pizzas were lovely, (they were!) and said goodbye.

Such an odd atmosphere. 🤔 The show was fantastic! The restaurant, well, we came out feeling decidedly uncomfortable! We eat our quite often btw, but never encountered thos attitude from staff before!

It seems like one of the staff must have misunderstood something you'd said or had misread something in your tone. Don't dwell on it - it was a misunderstanding in a restaurant you're unlikely to visit often, not your local pub and you've pissed off the landlord.

dontputitthere · 29/10/2022 19:10

Just out of interest where was this?

Sounds like a mistake/miscommunication but to be honest I'd expect better service. Unless they thought you said something racist/homophonic/started chanting satanic verses I wouldn't expect such a negative reaction.

Wisteriabloom · 29/10/2022 19:10

Yes, possibly! We're only in Central London about 3 times a year, there are plenty of other restaurants to choose from so we won't be going there again!

Did you say “Can I get” instead of “May I have”?

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/10/2022 19:13

They just sound crackers - restaurants in central london are used to people from all obey the world, with all sorts of customs -it won’t be anything to do with you - it’s probably a miserable workplace. forget it

Hope you enjoyed the show

because that would really upset them 😂

SmileyClare · 29/10/2022 19:15

I wouldn’t take it personally, the waiting staff were pissed off about something. Maybe it’s a really awful place to work?

I know loads of eateries are incredibly short staffed, they could’ve been so tired they’d started having paranoid delusions. 😂

Hope it didn’t spoil what sounds like a fun outing with your daughter.

SavingsThreads · 29/10/2022 19:16

Where was this Op? You're allowed to say!

A580Hojas · 29/10/2022 19:17

Yes! All servers in London restaurants are the sons and daughters of Satan. Thank God you survived your experience.

Sindonym · 29/10/2022 19:17

Was it one of those Karen restaurants (dreadful name I know).

HeadacheEarthquake · 29/10/2022 19:20

Sounds weird but fuck them? I wouldn't dwell and I'd concentrate on the food and the show with your daughter, sounds lovely.

eurochick · 29/10/2022 19:25

That sounds really odd! You must have offended the male waiter somehow and he bitched about you to his colleague. Bizarre.

What??

SmileyClare · 29/10/2022 19:32

From Google;
Karens diner is an Australian chain of restaurants, a fun experience where the staff are deliberately rude and insult the diners

DucklingDaisy · 29/10/2022 19:35

Even if you’d behaved very rudely, it would be odd for waiting staff to respond like that. I’m trying to think of how you could possibility have inadvertently offended seriously enough to prompt that kind of treatment and I’m drawing a blank.

It’s so bizarre I think you have to assume it’s more about them than you.

SmileyClare · 29/10/2022 19:35

I think there’s a Karen’s diner in London..
Apparently the waiting staff will deliberately involve you in odd role playing situations

"Fun experience"

Hmm not sure I would find that fun

SpookyPanda · 29/10/2022 19:36

Have you checked trip advisor reviews?

FinallyHere · 29/10/2022 19:37

One of the things that puts me off very central/west end restaurants is exactly because they mostly cater to passing trade and so don't actually have to put much effort into building up their reputation for excellent service.

The staff are not motivated and so uncomfortable experiences are not uncommon.

Put it out of your mind.

One place in London i have always enjoyed is The Wolseley, who have some staff who manage to recognise me even though my visits are at least a year apart.

I’ve literally never said ‘may I have’ in my life. I don’t know anyone who talks like that.
Op I’d be contacting manager of the restaurant about your experience. Can you find them on social media? It doesn’t need to be a public post, you can private message them at first

Swivellingbrat · 29/10/2022 19:49

Zizzi in the Strand? I had some iffy service there but no overt rudeness. More can’t be bothered. Maybe they mistook you for someone who had been rude to another staff member - weird.

Croque · 29/10/2022 19:54

I bet it was Pizza Express. The service can be rude, inattentive or downright weird.

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 29/10/2022 19:56

I would write all that in a review.

WrongWayApricot · 29/10/2022 19:58

Were you being served by celebrities and they were waiting for you to recognise them? That's the only way this makes sense to me Confused

QuebecBagnet · 29/10/2022 20:02

If it was a pizza express in Soho I encountered a bit of an odd waiter there once. Not so much at us but he lost his shit with another table and then while he was quite chatty with us slagged off all the other customers to us.
