I'm feeling confused, after an uncomfortable restaurant experience. 🤔

My adult daughter & I were in London yesterday, to see a show. We popped into a pizza restaurant beforehand, and all started well. We were shown to a table by a lovely girl, who introduced us to her colleague, the waiter who'd be serving our table.

He gave us our menus and then reappeared, to take our order. We ordered our pizzas and drinks (politely, we thought)! He took our order, then just stood staring at us, before shaking his head and walking away. He then silently brought our food & drinks, we thanked him and he stared again, shrugged and went back to the kitchen.

While eating, my dd pointed out to me a lovely mural by the bar, made up of West End musical titles, entwined with Lindin Tube stations and famous lines from songs. We looked across, admiring it. At that point a stony-faced waitress came over, saying we seemed to be staring at her and was there something we wanted!😲 I said absolutely not, we were admiring the mural behind her! She 'eyerolled', and went back to the bar.

We were toying with having dessert, but felt uncomfortable with the atmosphere by then and asked (again politely) for the bill, thinking we'd get ice-cream in the theatre instead!

Our waiter brought the bill over, I paid by card (I wouldn't have tipped but it was included in the bill anyway). He gave me the receipt and just stood again, as if he was waiting for something! I didn't feel comfortable complaining, so just said the pizzas were lovely, (they were!) and said goodbye.

Such an odd atmosphere. 🤔 The show was fantastic! The restaurant, well, we came out feeling decidedly uncomfortable! We eat our quite often btw, but never encountered thos attitude from staff before!

Did you say “Can I get” instead of “May I have”?

@stuntbubbles 🤣

Crimeismymiddlename · 29/10/2022 20:20

How odd. You get this sometimes with staff in restaurants/retail. Who knows why they behave like that, occasionally I have found that I have offended serving staff by being nice and polite and have never returned after dismal service-even places I was a regular at.

To the poster who asked if it's Pizza Express, yes it was, in Soho! I didn't mention the name at first as I've been to many Pizza Expresses, and honestly can't fault them! We just struck unlucky with this one.

Don't be daft

How odd!

Wisteriabloom · 29/10/2022 20:49

Stuntbubbles - I think I said 'Can we have'? 😀
I did wonder if perhaps we weren't 'bantery' enough. I'm not shy, exactly, but quiet ish and dd is similar. Not that the waiter was offering banter, but maybe expected us to?

He sounds a knob

I'd have lobbed a dough ball at him as I left

Hope you and your daughter had a fab time at the show!

God I hope not. How embarrassing, surely the punishment for that is jail 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I bet it’s the same branch we were at in soho, it’s on a street which runs at a right angle to Oxford street on the south side of Oxford street and is on a corner? I do seem to remember some odd mural. It sounds like the same waiter.

QuebecBagnet · 29/10/2022 22:52

Dean Street possibly looking at a map?

MarmiteCoriander · 29/10/2022 22:53

I too would look at other reviews on trip advisor to see if this is common at that particular restaurant.

Achangeiscomeing · 29/10/2022 22:58

Next time go to Pilgrim Pizza they have one in Covent Garden (Garrick St) and another in Soho the pizzas are so much nicer more authentic and not expensive either it does get busy and they are smaller type restaurants so you do have to queue at busy times think you can book too

I would have bet money on it being here. It's not you, OP.

Quebec - From your description I think we were at this very same place!! We chose this restaurant because it's near the theatres. Maybe they rely on passing trade (people eating before or after a show) and think they can get away with this as they're unlikely to see them again?

A shame, as the girl who greeted us was lovely! Anyway, we'll avoid this place in future.

The show was brilliant, by the way! It was Lion King. 🦁🎶

Give them.a shitty review on trip advisor

VladmirsPoutine · 30/10/2022 09:12

Give them a shitty review on Trip advisor as per PP. But don't dwell too much on it - I really really dislike interacting with the public even at the best of times.

itwasntmetho · 30/10/2022 09:22

YWBVU not to go to the Byron Burger near there, I had my first Byron Burger before the Lion King and I’m hooked.
Those staff just sounds very odd though.

I’ve been ill twice after Byron. Won’t be back.

I bet it was Pizza Express. The service can be rude, inattentive or downright weird.

I've had the opposite - it is generally decent.

Now ASK is (or was) another story.

lieselotte · 03/01/2023 18:32

Although I haven't been to a PE in Soho, only near Waterloo and near the City.

Notyouyetagain · 03/01/2023 18:34

Possibly a mishear of something you said? I was in a cafe recently in a different part of the country. I ordered 2 coffees, then added “and a scone please”. The server looked at me and said “a what?” I’d presumed at first it was my pronunciation of scone (scon not scown) so I repeated. She burst out laughing and said she thought I’d said “and a smile please”

HoppingPavlova · 08/05/2023 10:47

Karens diner is an Australian chain of restaurants, a fun experience where the staff are deliberately rude and insult the diners

Thats the concept but not the reality. I gave it a try and essentially they employ cheap 16/17yo wait staff who really can’t pull off the Karen thing to save their lives. I think they give them a sheet with insults, which they seem to deliver robotically, not related to the situation and out of context.
