What healthy things shall I put in my basket to stop me snacking on rubbish?

I WFH, have a sweet tooth and eat through boredom.

What nice and healthy things shall I put in my shopping basket to help me wean off all the snacky rubbish?

Also, any good ideas for breakfast please? I don’t have a great routine so tend to just graze.

thank you!

Mixed nuts with dried cranberries/raisins - but only take 3 flat tablespoons at a time to snack on. once done, is still hungry, drink slightly squash water. Wait 20 minutes. Squash water again. Repeat.

OoooSweetChildOMine · 28/10/2022 20:52

Cauldron veggie sausages

LemonDrizzles · 28/10/2022 20:52

Also as many pears, and apples as you like. Maybe a banana

DelilahBucket · 28/10/2022 20:58

I would personally not buy any snacks at all. If they are not there you can't eat them. Get into a good routine with your meals, lots of protein to keep you feeling full. Know when you are likely to feel hungry and arrange your meal times to avoid this. For example, I have two boiled eggs for breakfast, but I take them to work and have them a few hours apart. I then don't have lunch until 1:30-2pm ish. This stops the 4pm hunger pangs and I'm ok until tea time.

Halfarsedwoman · 28/10/2022 20:58

I would say a big NO to satsumas and other fruit if you have a sweet tooth already - you'll exacerbate it. I would go for high fat stuff like nuts (almonds, Brazil, walnuts, pecans), avocados and olives, tinned fish like mackerel and stuff like that.

Halfarsedwoman · 28/10/2022 21:01

Yes @DelilahBucket makes sense - look up Zoe Intermittent Fasting and you might have better success with that than changing what you snack on.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/10/2022 21:04

Porridge always really fills me up. You can add peanut butter or nuts and honey/maple syrup, even chocolate! 🙈 make it yummy. And I always put a piece of fruit in my bag. So I have to eat it. Then I feel way better!

Apple and peanut butter is also good.
Cheese and marmite yum.

endlesscraziness · 28/10/2022 21:18

I have a sweet tooth. For breakfast my current go tos are: chopped apple and a few sultanas sprinkled with cinnamon heated in the microwave for a minute, a bit of museli and Greek yogurt with toffee flavour drops. Or porridge made with water, protein powder and a spoonful of biscoff spread.

AdaColeman · 28/10/2022 21:19

This time of the year pomegranates are in season. Have a look on YouTube for how to cut them up so you get neat, easy to eat, segments of the fruit.

When I was a child, it was an afternoon's entertainment to sit with a cocktail stick eating a pomegranate!

Porridge for breakfast will fill you up till lunchtime, and it's so easy & quick to make in the microwave.

Crackerbread with extra light Philly and grapes is basically cheesecake.

Cook a chicken and cut slices into small strips. Sprinkle slices with salt and eat it like a bag of crisps.

Hard boiled eggs are a filling snack. Even more delicious dipped into a drop of salad cream.

Apple slices or carrot sticks dipped in sweet chilli hummous

Laurie01 · 28/10/2022 21:31

Celery sticks with salt on.
Those bags of dried apple rings, spongey.
I have a drying setting on my oven so thinly dlice mango and dry, or just buy a bag, Aldi mango is reasonably priced.

I eat in a nine hour window as it is…

Those little chicken satay sticks, about 22 calories each. You get about 20 in a pack.

Excellent call!

Ryvita and Danish blue with grapes

Chicken wings

Sushi

Tiny bit of dark chocolate

Lentil chips

I'm a big snacker <3

Branleuse · 28/10/2022 21:36

Really nice fruit

Halfarsedwoman · 28/10/2022 21:36

If you eat ina 9 hour window already then look at switching out high carb stuff for lower carb stuff. I would avoid anything with processed carbs.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 28/10/2022 21:39

Amazed no one has mentioned olives yet. The ones stuffed with garlic always satisfy my craving for snacks. If you cut out crisps/salted tortillas you won't go over your daily salt intake with olives.
Stuffed vine leaves are also delicious and filling.
My DS loves the sugar free yoghurts, think they're called "light and free" and they come in caramel cake flavour in some shops.

dudsville · 28/10/2022 21:40

I agree with the poster who said "easier said than done but just don't snack". I used to never snack. I lost my way with the pandemic and gained two stone. Towards the start of this year i started the 16:8. It helped me learn again to not snack. The 16:8 becomes easy and then it's easier to have longer stretches some days just when you naturally feel less hungry and some days of 3 meals, but there's no left over space for snacking.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 28/10/2022 21:41

Also buy some wholefood (unsalted) nuts or sunflower seeds and roast them in the oven. So much flavour and a great mineral/amino acid profile.

Tobermoryeveryday · 28/10/2022 21:44

Pink grapefruit
sunflower seeds toasted
marmite on toast
tiny slither of Stilton on anything
really flavoursome herbal tea like pukka vanilla chai

FusionChefGeoff · 28/10/2022 21:44

Could you try filing up with proper meals instead? If you're full you won't want to snack.

Alternatively I find nuts good (pecans and macademias are my favourite) but put them in a ramekin dish so I don't eat the whole bag!

I've started to get into using little gem lettuce leaves as a dunker / boat for egg Mayo / homemade mackerel pate (surprisingly easy to make a huge batch), normal pate / cream cheese etc

Olives with feta / manchego. Taps deli meats.

I eat mostly low carb so these are all fairly high fat as that's what works if eating that way so be mindful of that if you're eating carbs the calorie counts are quite high but their very satisfying

Darkwetnose · 28/10/2022 21:51

I think you just need to stop snacking - eat if you’re hungry - if you are bored find something interesting to do - snacking is the habit you want to quit

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/10/2022 21:59

Barebells protein bars (salty peanut is a good start)
john west no drain tuna in olive oil
babybels
apples

eggs - on toast, omelettes - super quick meal
frozen baked potatoes - not the real thing - but good for a super quick meal
Sachets of brown rice, grains, lentils

Cook frozen microwave meals

breakfast - porridge with plain yogurt and fruit (frozen berries) and milled seeds, most

NoEffingWay · 28/10/2022 22:13

Protein is key for keeping me full. I have high protein snacks or yoghurts with meals and the need to snack has fallen through the floor.
Myfitnesspal has made me entirely accountable for what I eat and gave me a scare about how much crap I was eating.

Quackpot · 28/10/2022 22:29

Popping corn. Dry pop. Season with herbs/spices. Super filling, cheap and really healthy
