Anyone seen "The Banshees of Inisherin"?

With a few hours to spare, I looked up films in the local cinema. This was the recommended film, with promising reviews on Google from film critics. I sat down hoping for a thought-provoking visual feast. Two hours later I left that cinema in clouds of despair, and depressed by all aspects of it. I just thought it was awful, in so many ways. Some people walked out before it ended. I don't want to get into spoilers, but has anyone seen this? I just don't understand the rave reviews and feel like I missed something.

Thanks @mikado1 & @Foolsandtheirmoney

I have just been to see it with my oldest friend. We have promised that I will not destroy piano and she will not harm my pets!

I think the concept of ending a friendship just like that is so alien to me I couldn't relate to the film at all. I was hoping for an undisclosed secret or something rather than Colm just deciding the friendship was at an end.

XanaduKira · 16/11/2022 18:57

Totally agree @IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere but when you think of it in the context of the Irish civil war and the fact that friends literally did turn on each other overnight, it makes much more sense. I didn't enjoy the film on first watching, but after reading this thread & reading more widely about it, I absolutely loved it and think it's a work of genius!

BannerofHeaven · 16/11/2022 20:44

Loved it for all the reasons already mentioned and thought Colin Farrell was phenomenal.

It gave us so much to talk about and I'm still thinking about it a week later.

XanaduKira · 16/11/2022 21:17

Same here @BannerofHeaven

I saw it and do you know what the best part was? When it was over. It was slow and it was dark. If it gets nominated for an Oscar, I’m positive it will win and that’s sad since there are much better films out there.

AlwaysGinPlease · 11/01/2023 06:43

Weird but wonderful. I too cried over one bit. A very different but enjoyable film.

XanaduKira · 11/01/2023 17:04

So pleased it won so many awards and particularly happy for Colin Farrell - he's fab!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 11/01/2023 17:18

I saw it on Netflix us) three weeks ago..where it was described as a black comedy. It is correctly showing on Disney Plus!

I'm still traumatized, and have told everyone I can find not to watch it. Too awful and very depressing.

awaynboilyurheid · 11/01/2023 17:36

Oh dear I didn’t get it at all, thought it was really an awfully depressing film, best thing I could say was Colin Farrell played his part well but I certainly couldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Even if it’s about something deeper than two friends falling out and has a hidden meaning about the civil war I still thought it was biggest pile of rubbish.

Coffeecreme · 11/01/2023 18:16

i hope it comes back to netflix now

AllIWantIsHelp · 11/01/2023 18:18

I absolutely love this film! I don't understand how you can't

CakeIsNotAvailable · 11/01/2023 18:44

My husband has family in Achill and he spent some time working there when younger, so I was tempted to suggest we watch this film for that reason. I'm glad I've seen this thread. I'm feeling a bit fragile and really wouldn't cope with anything too bleak, so it sounds like we need to give this one a miss.

LlynTegid · 11/01/2023 19:10

I don't like Colin Farrell so gave it a miss.

Niftythrifter · 11/01/2023 19:12

I’m still confused by the end as me and my friend can’t agree on it.

QueenJaineApproximately · 11/01/2023 19:26

I loved it, great acting and spectacular scenery. It’s unlike any other film I’ve seen and I agree with previous posts regarding the storyline reflecting the civil war of the time. A winner for me.

Jewel1968 · 11/01/2023 19:29

For some reason I didn't find it as depressing as others. I see the link with the civil war and it makes sense but no idea if that was the intention. I think the thing that found most moving is the isolation on a island - the claustrophobia. The sister moved me the most.

It is also very funny in places. It made me think. It played on my mind and still does when very few films do.

Takoneko · 11/01/2023 19:31

Absolutely loved it. Yes, it was bleak, but I found it was full of characters that I cared about. It really stayed with me afterwards.

See normally I don't either but I loved him in this!

Shortkiwi · 11/01/2023 19:37

Loved it, brilliant acting, beautiful scenery, both bleak and funny moments.

Thestagshead · 11/01/2023 19:39

Watched it last night on Disney plus. I liked it. Made me laugh out loud a couple of times, and feel sad at others.
