Friend has Covid - WWYD?

Sorry it’s another covid one.

I was due to meet a friend in London tomorrow for the weekend. We have a hotel booked, theatre tickets etc. She’s texted me just now to say she has just tested positive for covid. She is still planning on going and ‘wearing a mask’ but assumes I won’t because I have children, although I know she would like me to go but doesn’t want to pressure me.

I barely leave my house or do much socialising so I am not sure what is normal any more. I feel like it would be mad to meet up with her knowing she has covid but am I still living in 2020 and things have moved on now? I don’t know whether it’s advised now to just carry on regardless.

I honestly don’t know what to do. I suppose this is a WWYD really.

For info I have just had my 4th vaccine and my children have had 2.

Go and enjoy yourself. My friend works in a primary school kitchen and was told if she doesn't go she doesn't get paid, so went.

I'd still go, I wouldn't care.

Your friend may be a twat but not actually doing anything "wrong". Are you vulnerable or just cautious? You could go and catch it from someone on a train, another theatregoer, someone in a restaurant or bar. Can you book a separate room?

Gut instinct is telling me from her messages that she knew you wouldn’t go and she wanted to go with her daughter or someone else. I’d be asking for her ticket and go with someone you know. She shouldn’t be going with covid

Yes but by sharing a room all night with someone who is positive, the OP is much much more likely to catch it vs let’s say being sat next to someone with covid at the theatre or being in the same carriage in the train.

the risks aren’t comparable. In one case, the chances of her catching it are very high (see how covid spread within a family) whereas the chances of catching covid in the train/theatre are much lower (otherwise more or less everyone would have be ill this september/October)

I would definitely just go

WakingUpDistress · 27/10/2022 21:06

The theatre is a rare treat for lots of people and booked months in advance. You can't know in June you'll have a cough in October.

Thats a risk you take tbh. The fact it’s a treat doesn’t mean you can make the whole experience crap for the others next to you (coughing) and infect them with covid at the same time!!

ImSoCold · 27/10/2022 21:40

Friend has messaged me to say she isn’t going to go either, because she would feel self conscious coughing in the theatre (which, weirdly, is what someone up thread said).

I couldn’t get a train refund on Trainline due to ‘type of ticket’ so I amended it to some random date in the future and paid £10. Throwing good money after bad no doubt! She can get us a hotel refund but I think the theatre tickets are lost.

Now I’m the one feeling guilty.

You may be able to return the theatre tickets to the box office for resale or credit, worth a try.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 27/10/2022 22:29

I''d go.
But then again i also don't test if feel ill because whether it was positive or not I'd still go out. So no Point testing!

underneaththeash · 27/10/2022 22:59

It might not be OP - have a look on the T&Cs you may be able to change the date.

Filthycop · 27/10/2022 23:30

What theatre show is it? i am going to the theatre in London with my immunocompromised husband this weekend and would like to avoid your friend please...

Filthycop · 27/10/2022 23:32

sorry have just seen you're cancelling

MichaelFabricantWig · 27/10/2022 23:35

It she’s just carrying on as normal why on Earth did she bother testing?

I cba with Covid any more but if I knew I had it or if I felt ill I’d stay home! And indeed did when I had both Covid in sumner and was otherwise ill a few weeks ago

wafflyversatile · 27/10/2022 23:40

I'd be tempted to call the theatre and cancel the tickets. Pretty shitty putting you in the situation of having to miss out because she has no regard for others.
