Just wondering what spooky little visitors to your house get?

The shortest of short shrift. Bloody yank import. And black Friday can fuck off whilst we're about it.

@dropthevipers it's a Scottish thing actually

Kanaloa · 27/10/2022 01:03

@thaegumathteth

Don’t worry, it’s nearly Christmas. So soon we’ll be treated to the thousand of snotty threads about who says SANTA? We’re not ‘bloody yanks’ we’re British and British people say FATHER CHRISTMAS. Cue several exhausted replies about how in Scotland and Ireland we do, in fact, say Santa Claus/Santy. Same with any pronunciation threads - you can pronounce it RP or wrong.

SkiingIsHeaven · 27/10/2022 01:18

Give them apples. It is healthier and they never come back. Their friends also hear and they don't come either.

We've bought lots of mini bags of skittles/the dark side skittles.
A few large bags of Adams family sweets.
Some mini haribos and I'm going to grab some mini bags of white buttons and Cadbury buttons for the youngest trick or treaters.

I'm really looking forward to Halloween, mine have outgrown trick or treating (youngest is 15)but they love helping with the trick or treaters,so we're going to watch some Halloween movies and have a buffet and a few games and drinks and hand lots of sweets out.

MenopauseSucks · 27/10/2022 05:54

In my area, it is well known that you will only get Trick or Treaters if you decorate the outside of your house eg a lit pumpkin & a few lights and don't have any outside lights on.
Works fine for me!

HairyMcLarie · 27/10/2022 06:11

A bunch of fives and a bat up the nightdress

Mrs22 · 27/10/2022 06:12

Slavetomytoddlers · 27/10/2022 06:13

Thanks all.

We’ve very recently moved from an area where there were very few children and we never had a trick or treater in the ten years we lived there, to the outskirts of a tiny village. It wasn’t a thing where I grew up either, so I’ve never had them.

We haven’t met many of the neighbors yet and we’re not near many houses (maybe three within walking distance) so trying to get a balance of appearing somewhere between “approachable new neighbours who won’t be weird if you knock” and “insane Halloween freaks who want to lure in your children” 😁

Will light a pumpkin in the porch and stock up on mini bags of Hairbo and some little chocolate bars.

I buy a mixed bag of swizzles sweets - lollies, etc and a bag of mini choc bars - mars, Milky Way type ones.
I like the satsuma idea though!

MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat · 27/10/2022 06:22

Nothing. I turn the lights off and lay in bed watching Halloween films whilst scoffing all the Halloween sweets I've bought. This I'm working though

inappropriateraspberry · 27/10/2022 06:25

I have a feeling this year will be busy. We've a had a few quiet years with Covid etc, but there are a lot of children in the village just getting to the right age for trick or treating.
As long as it doesn't rain! I always envy those places in America where it's dark but a bit warmer than here, and you can go out in a costume without your coat over the top!

Malfi · 27/10/2022 06:28

I hate outdoor decorations. Carved pumpkins are fine, but I actually think it shouldn’t be allowed to go all out on cobwebs, spiders, skeletons etc outside. Do what you like on the inside.

Slavetomytoddlers · 27/10/2022 06:32

Why not?

I don’t have outdoor decorations, but can’t see why you’d be upset at what someone puts outside their own house.

I don’t like garden gnomes, but I don’t care if other people have them.

They were there for sweets. It’s not odd or weird - it’s a fairly accepted thing that people do. And if you don’t participate just open the door and say ‘we don’t do trick or treat’ or ignore it. Opening it and quizzing kids on the liturgical significance of all hallows Eve makes you look like a dick.

the post was clearly ironic as PP said they’d never had trick or treaters round before hence why he asked the question.

I think it’s funny personally.

As for open the door and say you don’t do trick or treating? Err I don’t think so. One year when I didn’t open the door the dad of two tiny tots shouted through my letterbox that I was a miserable fucking cunt. You think people should open the door to that?

I turn out the lights, don’t open the door, and my own DC weren’t allowed out trick or treating when they were kids.

And PP is right, it’s not trick or treat, it’s treat or don’t open the door. If you asked the kids for a trick most wouldn’t even know what you were talking about. They go round with the expectation of being given sweets. Begging from the strangers they’re told to avoid for the rest of the year.

Because of the distress it can cause to passers-by. Not everyone wants to see giant spiders, ghosts and skeletons, and in fact they can be very distressing. My local Next

Malfi · 27/10/2022 06:37

Posted too soon.
Next Door group has several people suggesting people don’t do it. It’s never going to happen, of course.

Chickenpeppers · 27/10/2022 06:38

I make raspberry filled chocolate pumpkins and pinecones, those always go down well, we also have two bowls filled with chocolate coins, little bags of sweets, lollipops and fun sized chocolate bars

drpet49 · 27/10/2022 06:41

I give out mini treat sized chocolates like Mars bars, milky ways etc

LBF2020 · 27/10/2022 06:42

We are on the edge of a village and live on a national speed limit road with no footpath for pedestrians. So we never get any trick or treaters :-(

Distress to passer-bys? This country is becoming a joke!

😂😂😂

Holy shit.

You laugh, but it is very triggering when you have previously been a victim of a mugging by a giant plastic spider and a skeleton. I cry and shake if I even see them through a shop window these days 😉

Landlubber2019 · 27/10/2022 06:51

Moams from Aldi 99p for a bag

SpamhappyTootsie · 27/10/2022 06:53

We were in a holiday cottage in the middle of nowhere last Halloween, group of houses where we’d seen no sign of children in the preceding days. We were very surprised to hear a knock on the door about 8pm and a little gathering of young children (with a couple of parents) Trick Or Treating. I felt really bad we hadn’t taken some sweets up with us! We always have them at home, in a tub by the door.

Malfi · 27/10/2022 06:55

And the fact that you think it’s a joke means you don’t understand. Can you not think for one moment of any instances where it might be distressing?
Those with phobias.
The recently bereaved.
The terminally ill.
Etc.
I don’t mind personally, but I can see why some wouldn’t like it. Going all out for Halloween decorations outside is relatively new.
