I had these last year for a chest infection and had no side effects. Everyone is different; I’m allergic to penicillin and also react badly to erythromycin.

MidnightConstellation · 25/10/2022 23:02

I took it recently for an infection. I was told to drink a large glass of water with them so On the first day I did. I didn’t eat anything and felt terribly sick. I phoned the doctor to ask for the prescription to be changed. Then realised you are supposed to eat at the same time. If I did this I was fine. I usually have awful side effects from Antibiotics but was fine with these. You also need to stay out of the sun and avoid alcohol.

Did you read the leaflet, it normally gives the advice on to take it with food and not lie down.
I've taken doxy a fair few times when travelling for malaria prevention and as an antibiotic and only had a problem once when I lay down. Taking off market would be awful, but hopefully you feel better soon now you have a different one.

I was prescribed these today as well for a chest infection, have taken 2 and have also been vomiting! Am trying to decide if I should take anymore. I've been on amoxcillan and it's mot really worked.

lion71 · 25/10/2022 23:07

I took these for sinusitis and vomited them straight back up, felt nauseous for a while after. Was too scared to take again. Googled and this is common apparently (I think I took too much as well, if I remember rightly I took 2 pills by accident when it should have been 1 so that wouldn't have helped!) weirdly though, despite being too nervous to take again, my headaches stopped!!

sanityisamyth · 25/10/2022 23:16

You didn't think to ask how to take them? Basic directions are written on the label (number of doses per day, with/without food etc) but there is always a Patient Information Leaflet in the box. You could have read that.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/10/2022 23:18

Doxycycline is amazing stuff...better than pneumonia, that's for fucking sure.

Thekormachameleon · 25/10/2022 23:20

You want them taken off the market because they made you sick?
What about the countless people for whom they keep alive ?

vipersnest1 · 25/10/2022 23:23

I can't take them, or any other antibiotics in the same family (macrollide).
They provoke a very severe reaction - I shed the lining of my gut, which then bleeds (and it's very painful),
Other people may pick apart the way you're taking it, or your expectations of what taking it will achieve.
But if you're like me and just can't tolerate the stuff, let it wash over you: Flowers

Milkand2sugarsplease · 25/10/2022 23:30

Surely getting your prescription changed is all the solution you need? Having them taken off the market is a little extreme, though perhaps it's something you felt in the midst of feeling poorly.

For every person that reacts badly to Doxy (and I feel very queasy with them), someone else will react badly to amoxy, and all the other drugs we have available to us.

Serena1977 · 25/10/2022 23:43

I have taken this for pneumonia. Worked a treat. No side effects, dod what it said to do on the leaflet. Better than ending up in hospital or taking amoxicillin which doesn't work for me.

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 25/10/2022 23:47

Lots of people have side effects from medication. Lots don’t.
There is always a patient information leaflet included with the meds. This lists possible side effects along with other info.
You can report side effects using the yellow card system. yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk Any pharmacist will help you report a problem if you don’t know how to do it. They will also dispose of the unwanted medication.
You can’t ban a medication because it affects you adversely. You change to another one and keep a note of what affected you and how, so you’re not prescribed it again.

TwoShades1 · 26/10/2022 03:40

Lots of people have side effects to medication. I had these recently for a sinus infection and they caused me no issues, even though I’m very prone to nausea. Vomiting is hardly a catastrophic side effect so if you can’t cope with the side effects you go back to the doctor and get a different medication, which you have done. It’s no reason to not have the product available. Most iron supplements give me very bad constipation, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be available.

How long after taking this did people feel a bit better for peumonia? Just been giving these today but hoping to god my fever goes down pretty quick!!!

Thatnameistaken · 17/01/2024 15:55

I had these last week for sinusitis, my first dose was 2 tablets, then 1 daily following that. I made the mistake of not eating first and felt really sick until I ate something, taking with food is the key.
They worked a treat though, I started feeling better within 24 hours.

Molly70 · 17/01/2024 16:03

Taken off the market???? They are the most effective antibiotics for treating Lyme’s disease

Gettingbysomehow · 17/01/2024 16:24

I've been taking them all last week for a bad chest infection.
They made me vomit once, the first one I took but after that no problems.
They are excellent antibiotics, they can be used for bone infections too and save limbs that would otherwise need amputating.
Not all antibiotics agree with everyone. If one makes you feel terrible you can try something else.
I have loads of patients of mine on them for life (podiatrist) with no side effects whatsoever.
You can't take everything off the market that disagrees with only a few people.

Jadeee123 · 17/01/2024 16:33

I haven’t been able to eat since sat night, I’ve managed half a sandwich and a couple of crisps to take them tablets. Has anyone had any good reviews on them for pneumonia? I am absolutely I’ll here

MidnightConstellation · 17/01/2024 16:36

I took them last year. If you eat just before and drink lots of water it’s fine.

For pnumonia i would say a few days until you start to feel human again.

a few weeks before you feel properly ‘ok’ and maybe 5 weeks to be back at pre-illness levels of strength.

based on my experience but I am very fit and healthy so probably a reasonable benchmark. Pnumonia is very serious, take care of yourself x

Papyrophile · 17/01/2024 17:22

DH was prescribed them for a nasty bout of bronchitis, and they worked very well. However, if they disagree with you, then ask for an alternative.

Jadeee123 · 17/01/2024 17:51

Thank you, I’ve been ok so far ( 2 hours in) let’s see how I am tomorrow. Anyone else not well
now??

DelilahBucket · 17/01/2024 17:54

I'm fine with that one but allergic to penicillin and Clarithromycin made me very poorly. Everyone is different with antibiotics.

Jadeee123 · 17/01/2024 18:15

I hope I’m feeling a bit better tomorrow!!
