The inevitable return of Mornington Crescent

1000 replies

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/10/2022 18:10

As winter approaches and the nights draw in, one’s thoughts naturally turn to wholesome, homely entertainment. Instead, though, I invite experienced players and novices alike to join me in a game of Mornington Crescent.

To keep the pace gentle, I’ll begin with an inverse Lepton to

Seven Sisters

Urgh. What a depressing bunch of newbies on this thread! Can’t believe no one has pulled the Double Crossover Single Line Carriage rule yet! I’ll get in there first, then. It takes us straight to Tufnell Park. I’d like to see who can top that.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 12/01/2023 22:21

Newbies? I rather think not! Some of us have been playing the game of games for decades, but it would be vulgar to go into detail so all I will say is Ljubljana in ‘52.

Old Street

Rather bold of you to bring up Ljubljana, @ComeIntoTheGardenMaud. Memories may be short among aficionados of the game of games (due in no small part to the industrial quantities of creme de menthe that are often imbibed at our gatherings), but few of us have forgotten your role in the debacle. In fact, many game historians point to that event as the catalyst for the schism between the Continental and British doctrines.
Putting past grievances aside for now, I note the Cholmondley manoeuvre is conspicuous in its absence thus far in proceedings, so I shall take us swiftly to Angel.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 12/01/2023 23:38

I am nothing if not bold, GirlInTheDryShirt, but I think you may be confusing me with Lady ffinch-Fortescue, who was the instigator of that unfortunate incident in Ljubljana. My role was merely to clean up the mess (legal and diplomatic) and pay the dry cleaning bills. Thinking of m’learned friends:

Chancery Lane

We are again obliged I think to move west despite what views may come from the bench. So Holland Park it is.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/01/2023 08:30

I solved Semantle #349 in 12 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 16.93. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #8. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 55.28 (995/1000). semantle.com/

A few lucky guesses there!

ApolloandDaphne · 13/01/2023 08:30

Sorry wrong thread

TragicMuse · 13/01/2023 13:03

Holland always makes me think of S.W.A.L.K. and those kinds of things.

Paddington. No idea why, I've never even been to Lima.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 13/01/2023 14:48

Ffs you’ve just put me in Nidd with that. I’ll heckle from the sidelines until I can work my way out.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 13/01/2023 15:24

Abbey Road. You know why.

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 13/01/2023 16:21

It seems as if the 2018 abbreviation rule has been used, as Abbey Road DLR is the station where confused tourists end up, a place with a small notice and not a zebra crossing in sight.

So Cyprus DLR seems an ideal next move.

DuckonaBike · 13/01/2023 20:52

High risk play here - making use of the DLR on Friday 13th. I hope we don’t come to regret it.

A quick slide down Mudchute. Someone’s got to after all!

GirlInTheDryShirt · 14/01/2023 20:36

Are we still playing by Montague’s Fifth Revision? If so, I’ve found a way out of Nidd via a reverse shunt, a linear huff and a diagonal contraflow, which I’m delighted to report delivers me directly to Mornington Crescent <dabs at brow with monogrammed kerchief>

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 14/01/2023 21:18

Brava, GirlInTheDryShirt! A dexterous and elegant combination of moves. I trust you’ll start the next game with something equally creative.

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 10:13

Well done. I should have remembered how valuable Bank-Monument can be in a move in the game of games.

TragicMuse · 15/01/2023 14:25

Oh beautifully done @GirlInTheDryShirt!

Nidd to victory in one move is masterful.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 15/01/2023 14:46

Given it’s the third Sunday of an odd-numbered year, I believe the game has to start on the District Line, so I’ll kick us off with Becontree

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/01/2023 15:00

Ooh! I have the very best feeling about this game. Let’s stick with the arboreal theme

Gospel Oak

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 15/01/2023 15:24

Lots of trees at Kew Gardens, so let's move there.

DuckonaBike · 15/01/2023 17:57

What a tremendous winning move, and an elegant start to the next game!

Let’s keep it simple and classic with a Stowerton Pass to Hyde Park Corner.

measuringmylifeincoffeespoons · 15/01/2023 18:15

May I be permitted to intervene. If so, the classic Archbold move to start me off:

Highgate

HazelBite · 16/01/2023 14:01

Well I've no option but to go to Green Park

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 16/01/2023 15:47

Hmm. Not what I would have done in the circumstances (have you forgotten about the Hamburg Amendment, made after the Grand Duke’s terrible faux pas in ‘57?) but let’s roll with it:

Kilburn Park

OP posts:
LlynTegid · 16/01/2023 17:42

I think a move to Kensal Rise with some open spaces nearby is sensible.

DuckonaBike · 17/01/2023 19:32

Ah, that’s an area that holds some happy memories of my youth, Llyn.

Misty eyed with nostalgia, I shall make a simple pass to West Hampstead Thameslink.
