The inevitable return of Mornington Crescent

1000 replies

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 22/10/2022 18:10

As winter approaches and the nights draw in, one’s thoughts naturally turn to wholesome, homely entertainment. Instead, though, I invite experienced players and novices alike to join me in a game of Mornington Crescent.

To keep the pace gentle, I’ll begin with an inverse Lepton to

Seven Sisters

sorry, I’ve missed a few turns. A few people have mentioned battersea, but there’s a five mile queue outside the disused power station.

so I’m going to move from Waterloo to anywhere

Icantthinkwhat · 24/10/2022 23:43

Straightforward ? TCR has left me with no option but to invoke the special rules agreed at the Badgers Thrump convention in '68, whereupon, if memory serves me right I can make a reverse 'isosceles manoeuvre' to Chipping Ongar

Icantthinkwhat · 24/10/2022 23:46

Too slow .. Thwarted by a cross post ! Nothing for it but a swift sideways 'fidelity spring' to Charing Cross ..

Celebrityskint · 24/10/2022 23:46

No, you can only make an isosceles manouver in the event that you have first been to Tomblands

HazelBite · 24/10/2022 23:47

I agree its getting very sophisticated and needs to get back on track so I'm going for the 2003 premier variation with Arsenal

Icantthinkwhat · 24/10/2022 23:53

Quite right Celebrityskint. A lucky cross post prevented an embarrassing plummet into the Nidd...

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 24/10/2022 23:59

Surrey Docks

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/10/2022 00:22

Hmm - I thought I could see where this one was going but I'm struggling a bit now.

I'm playing it safe.

Canary Wharf

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 25/10/2022 00:24

It’s clear that at least some here (no names, no pack drill) have not studied the latest edition of the Consolidated Handbook and are playing by rules quashed by the Messiter Judgment in 2018. The only way out of this mess is

Brixton

OP posts:
Pumpkintopf · 25/10/2022 00:34

I believe given we have a useful segue to Brixton and it is between midnight and 1am on a Monday or (to quote the late great player of the Game of Games Baron von Schuhplattler) - 'twixt twelve and one with Tuesday begun' I can double back to

Camden Town

I have waited a lifetime to play that move.

RhubarbFairy · 25/10/2022 00:51

Hmmmm. I see the game has moved swiftly on whilst I was otherwise engaged. There are some cunning ploys afoot so for now I shall play it safe with Southfields

squarepegleg · 25/10/2022 08:33

The standard of play here is excellent. Well done all. I feel somewhat humbled to have recognised Angel can easily be played here.

HazelBite · 25/10/2022 09:25

Dammit I forgot the Messiter judgment!
In that case I have to go Great Portland Street

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 25/10/2022 10:15

Just as Mao Zedong, when asked about the impact of the French Revolution, reputedly said it was too soon to tell so, many years from now, we will be able to look back at the Messiter Judgment and understand how profoundly it has shaped the modern game. For example, it has enabled this double lateral Bungay to

Therapia Lane

OP posts:
NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 25/10/2022 10:20

Sorry, not in the true Magister Ludi spirit, but I can't resist the Freudian skip.

Golders Green

HammerheadCorvette · 25/10/2022 10:31

I'll take the GWR Lizzie Line to

Twyford

GirlInTheDryShirt · 25/10/2022 10:40

Twyford? Does no-one recall the Danegeld penalty any more? When two parallel moves have followed consecutively, the order of play is automatically reversed, so I'm left with little choice but to shunt us into Piccadilly Circus.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/10/2022 12:08

Ohh excellent move there. There really wasn’t another option anything else would have risked an inadvertent third parallel and we all know what that means.

Farringdon

GirlInTheDryShirt · 25/10/2022 12:25

As could have been expected, that puts you in Nidd, @ChazsBrilliantAttitude. Under the rules laid out in the 72nd Winchester Amendment (Appendix 2.7), I can now take full advantage of the area’s transport links, so it’s a rail replacement service for me to Dollis Hill, a station that some of the more senior players among us will recall formed part of the Archbishop’s opening gambit that fated night in 1983.

squarepegleg · 25/10/2022 12:32

Yes I do recall!

I'm going to triple slide back to wapping

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 25/10/2022 12:45

Oh no. That closes off several options, but I’ve had a quick conflab with the Colonel and I agree with him that my best chance now is

Queens Park

OP posts:
balalake · 25/10/2022 12:49

I make a short move to Headstone Lane.

Celebrityskint · 25/10/2022 13:02

i think some of you are forgetting the 2010 Arcadia decree meaning that you can move between time zones providing that you don’t change any key events

with that, I move one space to Torchwood.

squarepegleg · 25/10/2022 13:15

Gosh. Haven't seen that sequence since the tense and ultimately chaotic penultimate game played in the season of 1986.

I don't think anyone wants a repeat of that incident, so having considered my options I will go to:

Belsize Park

TragicMuse · 25/10/2022 13:31

I had to have a little lie-down.

But now, having reviewed the gameplay so far, I think the best, nay, the ONLY move allowed is Hyde Park Corner.
