Would you take "insurance" on a washer dryer?

I'm buying a washer dryer from a well known high street store (not from the good customer service one!). Anyway they are trying to sell me a monthly care plan for £4 a month. Is this worth it? Washer dryer is £550 and comes with a year warranty and 10 years parts guarantee with 1 year labour or some such.

If it broke completely, as much as I would be really pissed off, I could replace it. So do I take this cover offered or risk it? I've never bothered with insurance for these things ever. I do have high level contents cover but doubt that replaces broken washer dryers. Any advice appreciated.

@Epicstorm what on earth are you doing to your appliances???
I had a new kitchen 12 years ago, all integrated appliances. I had to replace the microwave 5 years ago and the oven 2 years ago. Had the the dishwasher repaired once about 5 years ago. Everything else still going strong, washing machine, hob and fridge freezer.

No I never take it. I'm sure more often than not you'd be told any fault was wear and tear/incorrect use anyway and they very rarely do fail in those first few years.

All the £4 pm I've saved have easily replaced the odd appliance that broke while it would still have been covered.

Like a previous poster I have cover with Domestic and General, and have had my money's worth from it. they replaced my Bosch washer dryer when it was irrepairable some years ago. I took out my cover as soon as the manufacturers guarantee expired. I have 4 other appliances covered and they are pretty good with repairs etc.
(As an aside, the dryer part will have a smaller capacity than your average tumble dryer)

Washer / dryers are notorious for going wrong.
The only appliance I ever pay cover for is a washing machine because in my 40 years of having them they go wrong a lot.

This!
Washer/dryers you cannot remove the build up of fluff without taking the machine apart, so I'm not out of pocket when it needs doing. Also my insurance has never gone up in the years I've had it.

I take out a 2 year warranty and any appliance that breaks after that I replace. Labour costs in London are £80 ph so not worth it, I'd rather get a shiny new machine.

Firm no from me.

Actually I would qualify my earlier post.
If you live in an area with soft water it may be different.
Where I live you can descale a kettle and it has another coat of fur within 48 hours.

I promise you we're just using them in the normal way. It's a mystery to me why we have so much trouble.

We have insurance for ours. They come out several times a year for it mostly to remove the fluff from inside it. It then stops itself as a safety feature, so it doesn't start a fire, but you can't get the fluff out of it yourself. We bought our first washer dryer when I was pregnant years ago to replace an ordinary washing machine because we didn't have the space for a separate dryer. It broke down after six weeks, before the baby was born. We had an almighty battle then with Currys to get it replaced. They did eventually but the baby was several weeks old and we had had several trips to the laundrette in the meantime. We bought the insurance then and have had it ever since. We have had new machines again on the policy since then.

We had a Hotpoint washer/dryer many years and four kids, oldest moved out had one of her own, (child NOT washer/dryer) it had lots of use. I always buy from John Lewis, 5 year warrany, NEVER Currys. I took back a microwave after a couple of months, falling to bits, they were awful.

I bought a Samsung washer dryer as it came with a 5 year guarantee. I'd look for one with a longer guarantee.

I used to think this was a good thing to have as previously had one completely replaced when they couldn't get the parts,

But recently had engineers out who just listened to the noise and said yeah they would have to take it apart so wait until it completely dies instead and previous to that they took 2 weeks to come out and then said over three weeks to get parts. I decided that actually it wasn't worth it as I ended up getting a new one fitted the next day. Now I don't bother with insurance as I have no faith in the appliances being repaired in a reasonable time.
