Struggling to cope week 5 of splatter diorheah from 5 months kitten

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 18/10/2022 21:03

I've started a thread in litter ( before the thread zealots) jump on me.

I'm now struggling to cope with cat diorheah.

Five week's in.

Splash everywhere her butt and trousers splattered...walls in it...we are having to confine her to the kitchen.

She has a walk on a lead and one hour of play inside. Otherwise she's smearing poo.

We have wipes but are careful as they hurt her.

Poo samples are clear but not back on the one beginning with C.
If that's clear we look at other stuff.

We live in a small house. One main living area and a closed off kitchen.

It's a horror show. I've had pets before and nothing like this. It's my worst nightmare in. Pet. My girls cant hug their pet.

What else can we do..i dare not change food .

Is there anything I can ask vet for or do.

I did buy some special gastro cat food and it's done nothing.
I'm desperate. I'm extremely worried about hygene.

Sorry can’t offer much advice other than i’ve been there myself with two kittens - who were also on Iams kitten food (dry). They were fine at the start but then had diarrhoea constantly until i changed food. Switched to Purina kitten (pink bag) and within 5 days it settled completely. Also checked for worms, stomach bugs etc through vet. I also now have to limit wet food to 1 half pouch a day each. Some cats, particularly some breeds, are more prone to stomach issues. What breed is your cat?

Thedungeondragon · 19/10/2022 14:29

Has she been tested for Campylobacter? We had similar with a kitten a few years ago, and after multiple tests over weeks it turned out to be that. Our kitten seemed otherwise healthy, but had constant diarrhea as you've described. A course of antibiotics sorted her out fairly fast in the end, although she always had fairly delicate guts.

postitnot · 19/10/2022 15:12

We had this
After advice from the vet I cut out everything and just gave our cat chicken breast (precooked frozen strips from asda are great)

It made his poo solid, but then I found pretty much every dry cat food gives him explosive diahorrea.

Then we tried a few grain free wet foods, and the one that seems to suit best is wild freedom grain free. Fingers crossed that seems to work for now....

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 19/10/2022 15:34

She's half ragdoll , quarter Burmese I think, 1/4 unknown.

I've got chicken for her minced for later, more pro kilm.stuff from vet's... I also saw grain free meat in vet's but I won't get that yet.

We are now testing for tt fetous.

Vet nurse here. Please call your vets and get advice from them rather than getting conflicting advice from a parenting forum. See another vet if you don’t think ongoing support has been enough. Stool samples take a while to find anything conclusive and meanwhile the bowel needs to rest and recover not be stressed with trying different things. There should be a vet nurse with nutrition training to talk to at the practice. I would have thought they would have prescribed a gastro diet so you need to ask questions. But don’t listen to many different opinions go to those with 5years+ intensive training.

GoldenGumballs · 19/10/2022 15:50

Ps. It’s a horrible thing to go through but fantastic that’s she’s still doing well and not too miserable.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 19/10/2022 15:54

@GoldenGumballs

Thanks! Luckily touch wood she seems ok in herself, as they say... jumping around,keen to play...

The posters here have been extremely helpful arming me with things to ask the vet.

Cook them in the oven

Good idea, roast kitten unlikely to have bowel movements.

Horsemad · 18/10/2022 23:07

I'd just feed small amounts of cooked chicken for a few days & then start on a grain free, good quality food.

I've had foster cats and kittens with digestive problems and always try poached chicken breast for a few days. It has always done the trick of settling things down.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 19/10/2022 13:49

@Whiskeypowers

Thanks, she has been on an actual vet program for flea and worm so it's the proper stuff.
Her stool samples have come back clear Inc giruadia.

No worms.

@Anoooshka

If the tests said negative how come they still gave antibiotics for it??

It's now pretty much water dirorha shooting out.😪

Because the vet said that it sometimes doesn't show up in tests, and it's a really common infection for cats that have come from shelters.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 19/10/2022 19:50

She's had her first chicken tonight.
How long should it take to kick in and settle her?

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 19/10/2022 08:26

@tsmainsqueeze

Thanks.
Reason mixed it was because told that we should gradually change the food not suddenly esp with such sensitive tummy.
I'm wondering should we try going totally to the sensitivity food and boiled chicken?

Changing to different food for whatever reason should always be done gradually but you have already been feeding the dietary food so stop the other ones now and stick to that only , don't add chicken .
Make sure no one else in the house deviates from the sensitivity diet.
Sounds really strict i know but these diets work more times than they don't.
Someone mentions these diets don't suit any of their cats but their suggested alternative is not a balanced diet .
I'm not a slave to any one make of pet food and there are many out there but i have many years experience in my job and i do see how 'prescription' diets can make such a positive difference in many cases .
If the sens/gi food you use does the job i would stick with it for quite a good while until your cat gets bigger and stronger and if /when you decide to try something else put the tiniest amount into the current food then make the change over in as long as 7-10 days.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 20/10/2022 12:57

@tsmainsqueeze

Unfortunately I'd already started the chicken last night.

I also ran it past vets when I was in yesterday.

She's got blood in stool now.
We are checking for tt fetous, I put those samples in today.

It's just absolutely awful and she's leaking as well.

OP posts:
TheHouseonHauntedHill · 20/10/2022 21:41

@GoldenGumballs ..how long would you expect us to be dealing with this?
We are waiting for next poo results, for tt fetous....but she has blood in her stool now?

Total splatter diorheah and leaking.

What else can vet's do? What if it's not this tt fetous things?

ElegantlyTouched · 20/10/2022 23:16

Have you tried cat nappies? To try and reduce the mess.

Thelnebriati · 21/10/2022 01:01

You need to let the breeder or shelter know they sold you a very sick kitten, especially if it is tt fetous.

GoldenGumballs · 21/10/2022 08:47

Morning unless there are copious amounts of blood don’t panic too much as the capillaries in the rectum can rupture with the straining. Do keep an eye on her bottom area for signs of soreness. Keep communicating with the vets for your questions they won’t mind. Be patient you will get answers and results eventually but as the poster said above stick to the food the vet has advised as wfh change will cause setbacks. Keep her to one area in the house to save you stress. All the best 😊

GoldenGumballs · 21/10/2022 08:48

Wfh should say ‘every’ !

mistermagpie · 21/10/2022 09:23

I had a Bengal like this, it was TERRIBLE So I feel your pain. There was nothing wrong with him as such, we had all the tests you're having, but it was constant.

The only thing that worked, and it worked overnight practically, was switching him to a raw food diet. It's a 'thing' you don't just feed it raw mince or whatever, but if you have a google you should be able to find a supplier who will deliver to you. We got it delivered frozen and just defrosted what we needed. It can be a bit gross at first but honestly it's less gross than cat food.

We kept him on it for a while but gradually moved him onto normal cat food and he's 13 now and eats normal food. I think he basically grew out of the poo issues. He still has a sensitive stomach so has no treats or anything like tuna etc, but he's fine and well.

Possibly worth a try, although you probably feel like you're trying everything as it is.

boysarethebest · 21/10/2022 10:25

Why has she not been spayed yet?

Thelnebriati · 21/10/2022 10:52

Doesn't undiagnosed diarrhoea create a surgical risk?

thelobsterquadrille · 21/10/2022 11:43

Thelnebriati · 21/10/2022 10:52

Doesn't undiagnosed diarrhoea create a surgical risk?

It does, but she's only had the diarrhoea for five weeks, so I think people are wondering why she wasn't spayed earlier, especially as OP takes her outside (on a harness, but still risky).

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 21/10/2022 16:10

@thelobsterquadrille

No only you butted in with this, possibly the type of poster who tries to jazz up the most inane thread's with a good dose of unpleasantness. .
Do you think we have been in and out of the vets and they have not mentioned this?

She is not six months yet.

At six months or there about she will get done but not I imagine whilst we have this issue.

It's an extremely stressful situation that every single other poster has been so helpful with.
But there is always one.

If you would like to take this up with our vet's, pm me and I will give you their number.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 21/10/2022 16:16

@GoldenGumballs

Thanks, that's reassuring. I've not seen anything further.

Also I don't want to get too excited but we've had some ever so slightly firmer stools today. One was dark brown, the other yellow still however, instead of watering splatter it seems to have slightly more shape!we are back in vet's on Sunday so will ask again then .

She's just on the gastro stuff now.

OP posts:
thelobsterquadrille · 21/10/2022 16:33

@TheHouseonHauntedHill she doesn't need to be six months old to get spayed - they can get pregnant from four months.

I was just answering another posters question, not making any comment to you Hmm
