Handhold in A&E with toddler

GilbertlovesAnne · 15/10/2022 22:59

Is anyone up?

in A&E with my little one. She has had a high fever for 48hours - suspected uti so brought her in. Urine clear thank god. But her temp is really struggling to come down and her heart rate is high so they want to keep her in to monitor her 💔

Not sure why I’m posting. I’m terrified and just want her temp to come down.

Here, hope you get some answers soon. Hang in there. xxx

KellyTelios · 15/10/2022 23:03

What did the doctor say so far? Prayers for you op. Hopefully nothing serious. Should all be under control soon.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 15/10/2022 23:03

Also here. They’re resilient little buggers! And you’re in the right place.
Hope you’re both home snuggling soon x

High temperature is scary, but children are very resilient. You're in the right place to find out what's going on.

ofwarren · 15/10/2022 23:06

It's really scary isn't it, I hate worryingly high temperatures.
When my DS had covid his temperature was very high and his heart rate up. The doctors said a raised heart rate with a temperature is normal so try not to worry about that. Easier said than done I know.

Fingers crossed she picks up soon OP. I'm sure she will Flowers

42isthemeaning · 15/10/2022 23:07

She's in the best place - they'll look after her and give her what she needs. I know how scary it is. As a pp said, kids are incredibly resilient and bounce back quickly. Have a hug and handhold Flowers

Mischance · 15/10/2022 23:09

I hope she will be better soon - children have a habit of being really unwell one minute and fine the next. She is getting the observations she needs, so I hope you can be reassured by that.

Aconitum · 15/10/2022 23:10

Many of us have been exactly where you are now so know how you're feeling. It's a cliche but you really are in the best place. Yes it's scary and horrible and noisy and uncomfortable and boring and stressful but you'll get through it. Hopefully everything will start to calm down in the next few hours.

GilbertlovesAnne · 15/10/2022 23:54

thank you all so so much . Doctor satisfied it’s not ear throat or urine. The high temp is so scary. Earlier calpol didn’t work. Her heart rate was like 190.

I know we’re in the best place but omg it’s so hard not to panic

How old is she?

GilbertlovesAnne · 15/10/2022 23:56

She’s 2 years 3 months

I'll be thinking of you. It's such a scary position to be in but you are in the right place. I hope she's feeling better very very soon.

EricNorthmanYesPlease · 16/10/2022 00:27

She's the same age as my DD. I cant imagine how you must feel, id be beside myself. Massive hand hold from me.
Im sure she'll be fine though. Youre in the best place, hopefully you both get some sleep and she's better in the morning x

Harrystylestutu · 16/10/2022 06:25

I hope your daughter perks up soon OP. Been their too and it's horrible. There are some horrible bugs bout at the minute. Kids are normally so good at bouncing back quickly. I hope you managed to get a bit of sleep (so hard in hospital I know). 💐

Rainbowqueeen · 16/10/2022 06:27

Handholding here too. I know how terrified you must be. The staff will be taking great care of her. Make sure you take care of yourself. Stay hydrated and take lots of deep breaths

bananainpjs · 16/10/2022 06:28

Have you checked her tonsils?

StarsandStones · 16/10/2022 06:33

Thinking of you. Hope you both got some sleep 💐

livealatte · 16/10/2022 06:35

Normal hr for a 2 year old is 100-150bpm so yes her hr is high but it won't come down to an adults level if that makes sense? It would be the equivalent of you having a fever and going from 60bpm to 100bpm.

They have to keep her in because she's scoring highly on the chart for observations, it would be madness to send a child home without them demonstrating that oral calpol works, you'd just be coming straight back.

FistFullOfRegrets · 16/10/2022 06:41

I hope you both got some sleep & she's much better this morning. If you get sent home, make sure you get the instructions how to be readmitted if necessary so you don't have to go through A & E again. But kids really do bounce back quickly! She'll probably be wanting chocolate for breakfast & to go to soft play!

GilbertlovesAnne · 16/10/2022 07:09

Thank you all so so much for your wise words and encouragement. We were thankfully sent home in the middle of the night. Her HR came down to 139 which they seemed happy with and she responded to nurofen.
I’ve been monitoring her all night and she’s still getting hot when meds wear off but not as raging hot.
So strange normally all other bugs she’s had are accompanied by snot vomit or coughing. This one was just a piping hot fever in isolation which is why I’m so worried.
thank you again for your messages it’s so appreciated. Hopefully she picks up today ❤️‍🩹

Have you checked her tonsils?

This.
My dd had a very high temp. Super sore head too. She's 11. Turns out she'd puss on her tonsils and has tonsillitis!

YoBeaches · 16/10/2022 07:25

Well Covid is still doing the rounds I don't know if they are still testing at A&E. and if they go to day car setting or nursery then it's Scarlett Fever season which often starts with a high temp and a rash a few days later. Keep monitoring, when mine is that poorly with temp I do both calpol and nurofen in rotation every 4 hours (so one dose every 2 hours)

This is exactly my dd
Super high temp eith what looked like no other symptoms.
Doctor checked throat and it was her tonsils.
Dod they check this?
My daughter didn't complain of a eore throat! It turned out to be this. The doctor showed me white specks on tonsils. She is on antibiotics. Her temp.has gone now.

I also rotate the two. Super effective at bringing temp down.

Oopsydaisynotagain · 16/10/2022 07:54

Both my children had something really similar last week! In fact my youngest was kept in hospital for the same reasons. Very odd as temp were their only symptoms! They were both better after a day or two.
