Sorry another energy one...can anyone help?

Hi all,

Does anyone else have no idea how much they will be paying with the gas and electric increase?

My fixed rate was ending I'm August, so I signed up for a new one a month ago- which hasn't happened.
I've no idea what my direct debit will be next month and I'm panicking.

I currently pay £66 a month electric and £170 a month for the gas.
I've just checked my online usage (as I have a smart metre) and we used £9 of electric twice last week! It's never been above £4 in the past.

I've no idea what I'll end up paying later this month, or if I can afford it. However, at this rate it looks like electric alone could end up around £250 a month! Without the gas.

I've tried WhatsApp(ing) SSE but they never reply and I wa on hold for hours yesterday, so have up.

If my electric is currently £66 a month and my gas is £170, my gas is currently almost 3 times the amount of electric. Does this mean I may end up paying £500 plus for gas? I can't afford £800 a month on gas and electric!!

What's your annual usage for each fuel in kwh?

FindingMyself1999 · 15/10/2022 16:31

You need to look at your actual unit usage and then find out your new unit rate and take it from there.

Rosio · 15/10/2022 16:32

You're paying 66 and 170, do you actually use all that or have you built up some credit by overpaying?

Also, is it true there will be a price cap at £2500? If so, is this for just electric or gas and electric combined? It can't be combined as we currently pay more than that now.

I do have credit on both accounts but imagine that will be drained!

Electric is currently 32.35p per kWh (this is the increased price) and gas is 9.89p per kWh.

@Blueberrydelight the £2500 price cap is misnamed that’s the amount that the average family pays.
you need to look at your bill from this time last year to see how many units you used and then multiply that by the new unit rate.

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/10/2022 16:35

The price cap is based on an average household of 2.4 people and typical usage - it's basically a limit on how much they can charge you per unit, not overall.

Blueberrydelight · 15/10/2022 16:35

How do I find put my new rate? Do I just wait and see? Sorry, I'm rubbish with this stuff!

Its the number of kwh you use per year for gas and electricity that you need.

Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:36

It’s the increased rate that you wrote in your previous post

Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:37

What you need to do is look at how many units you used last year and times that by the increased rate that you put in your previous post

Blueberrydelight · 15/10/2022 16:38

I'm not sure how to check last year's usage

OP posts:
Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:39

for example we usually use 4000units every 6 months so it would be 4000x 0.3625

Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:39

You need to look at your bill from last year

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/10/2022 16:39

Havr you got anything on your bill like this?

Sorry another energy one...can anyone help?
Blueberrydelight · 15/10/2022 16:40

Thank you, it's very helpful. I just can't work out my usage for last year.

OP posts:
Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:40

Or does your smart meter go back to last October? Mine scrolls back a year so you can see how much electricity you used

Anunusualfamily · 15/10/2022 16:41

Do you have a bill from last year? If you have the app you should also be able to download it from there

Blueberrydelight · 15/10/2022 16:42

@NewBootsAndRanty I don't have a paper copy. I'm on my SSE online account and seeing what I can work out.

I don't have paper copies either - i just download a copy of my bill online.

Can you not see your actual bills?

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/10/2022 16:45

sse.co.uk/help/bills-and-paying/online-billing/viewing-paying-bills

Log in to your online account · Select 'View bills and payments' on the account you're interested in · Choose 'Download bill' to download a bill as a PDF

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 15/10/2022 16:47

I used to be with SSE. You should be able to download all your bills. Somewhere on the bill it tells you how the usage for this bill period compares with the same period last year. I think once a year you can also see what you annual usage is. You'd have to look at both gas and electric bills, obviously.
Ignorev the mythical £2500 "cap". Its based on average usage. You pay for the amount you use. Sounds like you are likely to be in credit, so don't panic.

Blueberrydelight · 15/10/2022 17:01

This is frying my brain!

So I only have 3 bills as our Oct one is not yet online and we moved into our property last Sept.

For gas- So last year is was 3.8p per Kw and we were using around 8,163.64 each quarter. So I'm averaging it around 32.65456 kWh per year. Is this right? And new price is 9.89per Kwh

Electric I only have one bill for a 3 month period and we used 335kWh for a 3 month period. I'll average out
1340 kWh per year. Does this seem right? Electric went up from 26.9per kWh to 32.35 per kWh.

Also not included the standing charge and VAT!

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/10/2022 17:06

Is there nothing on your online account giving an estimated annual usage?

You will not use the same amount in every quarter as some will be summer months and some will be winter months

clarrylove · 15/10/2022 17:15

Also depends if your heating is gas or electric or oil etc.
