Was running late to a meeting at DDs school as I was walking passed the bus stop one pulled in so I jumped on, the school was at the next stop, visable in the distance so not like it was far, £1.60!

Thought it would be about 50p 😂

I know! DS now has to get the busy to school so I did a trial run with him £2 for me and £1.50 for him for a 3 minute journey!

PuttingDownRoots · 14/10/2022 14:42

They are generally flat fares rather than distance especially in towns these days.

It would be £2.20 here!

Skinnermarink · 14/10/2022 14:43

Where?

in London it’s £1.65 however far you go, because there’s no tap out so you could have gone one stop or fifty.

I’d just get a jog on for the sake of a few stops, let alone 1.

Audioslaw · 14/10/2022 14:44

It's been like this for years. It's £3.30 for a single to go down the road towards town where I am. About one mile

theydontspeakforus · 14/10/2022 14:44

£6 return where I am. Cheaper to drive & park.

fairtrauchled · 14/10/2022 14:53

Where I am it's a flat fare of £1.80 whether you are travelling for one stop or one end of the city to the other .You can get from the town just outside of the city right to the other of the city , a journey of around 90 minutes.

ouch321 · 14/10/2022 15:02

Someone obviously hasn't been on a bus since the 1990s I think...

goldierocks · 14/10/2022 15:12

I use a lot of public transport (medical condition, not allowed to drive).

I've often pondered that it must be a challenge to work out a fee structure. Non-concession passengers are charged the same amount no matter if there are a handful of people on the bus or it's standing room only. I guess each company knows how much they need to charge in order to maintain the frequency of service they run while remaining economically viable.

I was surprised the companies in my area didn't raise their prices when fuel costs started to rocket. I would think a pretty hefty increase is on the horizon.

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/10/2022 15:16

That's nuts. My kids pay 1.80 one way to go 3 villages away from school. Tho that's school discount half price.

8misskitty8 · 14/10/2022 15:26

£1.80 a journey here for an adult, doesn’t matter how many stops.
You can get a day saver for £4.50 and go on as many buses as you like in a day.
If you use your bank card to tap each journey you get charged the maximum amount of a day saver at the end of the day.

Under 22 can apply for a free bus pass(Scotland) which can also be used for is under 18. Or it’s 90p a child fare.

TiaraBoo · 14/10/2022 15:26

My town is a flat fare too, definitely wouldn’t travel 1 stop. I’d feel cheated!

That should say ID.

I am nearly £10 return to my nearest city. 11 miles. I drive and park...............

NeverCleanAgain · 14/10/2022 15:30

It’s crazy how much bus fares vary around the country and it seems massively unfair how subsidised it seems to be in cities. From September it will cost my son £4.20 a day to get to his secondary school 3 miles away on a hugely unreliable service.

mam0918 · 14/10/2022 15:31

Busses are 'zoned' here... the routes vary crossing 5 zones, you pay by how many zones you are crossing.

So any stop in 1 zone would be that zones price regardless if your going from edge to edge or 1 stop.

My zone is like £5.20 but the cheaper zones are only £3.20 I think the more zones you cross the better value as I think 'all zone ticket' is under £7.

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2022 15:31

I think our next stop is £1.40 bus companies have a starting fare.

bingbummy · 14/10/2022 15:47

It's always been a standard fare as I remember and they don't adjust it for amount of stops. It's £2 here so I only ever get the bust if it's more than a 40 minute walk or I'm carrying something heavy.

AriettyHomily · 14/10/2022 16:01

£1.65 with TfL uo to the maximum cap. Kids have zip cards so free under 16 and then subsidised I think until 18 if In education.

thinline · 14/10/2022 16:02

I was £2 to go a few stops I couldn't believe it
Only did it so ds could experience the bus for the first time. If they had a sign on their window saying '£2 for 2 mins' I wouldn't have got on

JauntyJinty · 14/10/2022 16:08

I had to get a 1 stop return tiket on the DLR in London. The station was less than 1/4 a mile away but it goes over water so would have been a long way to walk round.

It cost £9!

Id consider cycling if the route is sensible.

Needmorelego · 14/10/2022 16:14

@JauntyJinty I don't think you paid the correct price for the DLR. It shouldn't have been £9.

Zosime · 14/10/2022 16:28

Isn't that more than the daily price cap on TfL?

dottiedodah · 14/10/2022 16:29

We have a flat fare of around £2.00 I think . The buses have had a battering in the pandemic for sure! One of our bus companies has folded up,so more pressure on remaining one .Usually drive unless going into Town and saves looking for car park .

I was curious so had a check what I might have done - I couldn't see prices for a return but a single for 1 stop on the DLR is £6.30 if you pay at the machine (although contactless is cheaper)
