£1.60 to go one stop on a bus!

Was running late to a meeting at DDs school as I was walking passed the bus stop one pulled in so I jumped on, the school was at the next stop, visable in the distance so not like it was far, £1.60!

Thought it would be about 50p 😂

I had to get a 1 stop return tiket on the DLR in London. The station was less than 1/4 a mile away but it goes over water so would have been a long way to walk round.

It cost £9!

Touch in / out with contactless would have been way cheaper!

mumda · 14/10/2022 16:32

I got the bus into Manchester once about 2 stops and it cost me at least that much. I sat there saying "how much" for the entire short journey.

focuspocus · 14/10/2022 16:38

I got yelled at by an outer London bus driver for only going one stop on the bus.

Yes, if nothing else this thread has shown me the error of my ways when traveling round London!

In my defence it was on my company credit card, so although I was surprised I wasn't really too bothered! If it'd had been my money I think I'd have walked! 😂

The new CC does have contactless (the one at the time didn't) but if I use it I won't have a receipt to put in, so not sure how that will work?!

Champagneforeveryone · 14/10/2022 16:40

We've just moved house and have a bus service for the first time in 15 years. As good citizens who care for the planet, DH and I hopped on the bus last week when we went drinking shopping in town, naively thinking it would be both cheaper than a taxi and good for the environment.

Almost £9 later 😬

At least the bus was electric, but it's only a 25 minute stroll or £4.75 in a taxi. Still, at least it was a new experience 😉

OurChristmasMiracle · 14/10/2022 16:41

It used to be 40p child 70p adult back in the day in London now kids travel free and adults pay 1.65

x2boys · 14/10/2022 16:47

It's often cheaper to get s taxi especially if travelling with kids etc.

It’s crazy how much bus fares vary around the country and it seems massively unfair how subsidised it seems to be in cities. From September it will cost my son £4.20 a day to get to his secondary school 3 miles away on a hugely unreliable service.

Save the £4.20 - that's a 45 minute walk. Unless it's a PE day or there's a day where your son has to take in a ridiculous amount of books, he can easily walk it.

Back in the day a bus from where I lived in Bury to Manchester City centre was 10 pence them were the days 🤣

@JauntyJinty register the credit card on you oyster account and you can get monthly itemised pdfs.

That was back when they first introduced Oyster right? It doesn't seem that bad to me for 20 years!

OldTinHat · 14/10/2022 16:58

Day saver here is a tenner. I'm getting the bus to an event this evening (parking wars or I would drive), 30 min journey, tap on and off, so am assuming that will be £10.

Blnuder · 14/10/2022 17:03

I don't get the point in this thread. Given that you can travel any distance for £1,65, that's brilliant value especially in London with hopper fare. You can go as far as you like within an hour for that price.

It's not a good idea to get on a bus for one stop unless it's a very rural area stops are far apart, in which case you got your money's worth anyway

Howmach · 14/10/2022 17:05

Skinnermarink · 14/10/2022 14:43

Where?

in London it’s £1.65 however far you go, because there’s no tap out so you could have gone one stop or fifty.

I’d just get a jog on for the sake of a few stops, let alone 1.

I'm disabled so takes me forever to walk, would love to jog but can't 😂

I'd planned to get a taxi but it cancelled last minute so had to walk.

Yes it's Manchester.

It's not a deep post, I was just shocked. I just thought it would be a lot less for literally 1 stop!

You can go anywhere for £2

I'm disabled and I was late as the taxi cancelled. So the one stop would have taken me a good 5 minutes with my walking speed.

It's not something I would normally do.

Best bit is the other person was 20 mins late to meet me so I could have taken my time!

You might be entitled to a buss pass your local council issues them .

Mrsjayy · 14/10/2022 17:22

Bus* sorry

I don't use them. That's why I was so shocked at the price. Been years since I've gotten the bus so I don't think it's worth the effort of applying for how often I'd use it. But thankyou!

@Skinnermarink It's 1.65 for an hour - not unlimited.

Incrediblebuttrue · 14/10/2022 18:10

Flat fare here - for €1.50 you can travel for 90 minutes. I have a bus pass though so I often hop on for one stop.

When did I say it was unlimited?

i say you pay when you get on, whether you go one stop on that bus or fifty.

or indeed if you change buses halfway through before the hour is up or whatever, if that’s what you meant.

glamourousindierockandroll · 14/10/2022 18:46

Agree with PP, I think £1.60 to go as far as you want is very good value.

You caught the bus for a walkable distance which most ablebodied people would not do, and for disabled people such as yourself, there are disabled bus passes giving you free travel. Maybe you could reduce the taxis and use buses more often.

I am not sure what else the bus company could do to be honest.

OhmygodDont · 14/10/2022 18:47

Yeah busses anit cheap like they used to be when I moved I got on the bus I live pretty close to where I wanted to go. Before it was £1.50 home to school. Now it was like £2.40 from my house to location that’s actually closer than the old route same company too.

etulosba · 14/10/2022 18:48

Someone obviously hasn't been on a bus since the 1990s I think...

When I was at school, we used to walk to the next stop to save 1p.

Early 1970s.
