Things to remind me of London? I'm homesick

And I only live down in Cornwall! But visiting frequently takes a lot of time and money.

DH and I really miss London, we wish we could move back but we know we've priced ourselves out and probably can't afford to move back

What small things could I do to remind me of London? We worked in Bishopsgate.

Truro isn't quite the same 😂

Don't get me wrong, Cornwall is beautiful and the Cornish people are amazingly kind. (I am actually Cornish!) But I miss the buzz and excitement of life in the SE.

We moved back here to care for elderly parents who have now passed away. We improved their end of life by being here and I have no regrets.

Anyway, things that remind me of London? Apart from poking myself in the eye with an umbrella on a busy street? 😂

Listen to down on the tube station at midnight by the Jam or London Calling by the Clash 👌

Namechange600 · 13/10/2022 22:21

Fortnum and Mason delivery?

I have earworms now!

Watch Sherlock, especially the first episode. Who passes through the streets of London, unnoticed?

Stopsnowing · 13/10/2022 22:38

Watch sliding doors and east Enders

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/10/2022 22:49

Bishopsgate has some really distinguished mugging. Three stabbed over a mobile phone scooter snatch. Those were the days…..

underneaththeash · 13/10/2022 23:06

Don't you want bad things too?
no parking, crap air quality, knife crime, turf wars, drug county lines, small houses, awful accents, massive inequality between rich and poor.....
We moved out of London a few years ago and much happier.

Love actually always makes me hanker London

Will have a think!

Perhaps if you're missing rush hour and being stuck in traffic you could go up and down the road between chivvy roundabout and the park and ride a couple of times. You say you're near treliske so it's not that far.

Go to Tate St ives. If you get the train from either Truro or St Erth then it will be like the Overground. check out a show at the Hall for Cornwall. They sometimes have touring Westend shows there.

Get someone to vomit on your front path overnight.

Provide neighbours with a month’s worth of weed to smoke in a week.

Get a family member to hide your car keys. While you search for them, said family member can announce, on repeat, “we apologise for the delay to your journey”.

Ask a family member to proceed up the stairs before you. When they get to the top, they need to stop dead whilst inspecting their phone.

Instead of downloading soothing sounds such as waves or dolphins, download sounds of all the emergency services sirens. Maybe throw in some tube/train/DLR noises too.

Get in your car and do your whole journey in mostly second-gear.

On a lovely, sunny day - pack up a picnic and get the train to London. Lots of people will do that in reverse, so you can feel like a tourist.

Sorry, can you tell that I’m glad I don’t live in London anymore! I have fond memories, it was the right place at the right time.

Isn't what you are doing like poking at a sore and not letting it heal? I'd rather think of that horrible things about London until you develop a love (or at least affection) for where you are.

But, to answer your actual question, I used to LOVE walking over the bridge after exiting Waterloo station. I felt I was IN London and had a real skip in my step. If one particular thing gives you that "skip in your step" then a nice photo of it, maybe even one with you in it on a day trip / night out to make the memory even more special.

The view from Waterloo bridge is one of my favourites in London - gives such a great aspect in both directions.

Buy some replica tube station signs, stations you used a lot of course, and display them in your house?

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 14/10/2022 06:03

Try and find some virtual walking tours...either podcast or video.
Fitness videos, but set in London...I did loads of different places in lockdown!
Watch any livestream or traffic cameras....or YouTube videos on the London Eye.
I love the Transport for London travel planner
The London marathon coverage may still be on catch up.

We have also done a day trip on megabus/national express for just a few pounds each way if you book in advance and travel at random times.
Maybe research online what you would do in a day as if you had never been before .

I miss London too (sometimes) and can't wait to go visit next month.

ninetieseyebrows · 14/10/2022 06:32

Listen to bbc Radio London

sashh · 14/10/2022 07:50

Buy this tent

www.coolthings.com/london-underground-tube-tent/

Then get half of Truro to stand in it not speaking to each other.

Get someone to mug you at knife point.

Find some stone steps and 'bump' a baby buggy up and down pretending it is the underground.

Go to a fish and chip shop, demand they cook the fish with the skin on and charge you £20.

Oh yes, Mornington Crescent, OK I'll go for .... Bank

MotherWol · 14/10/2022 08:01

Put stuff on your Christmas list London transport museum

Watch shows set in London: Spooks is great for this, and I loved watching Giri/Haji during lockdown 1 as it was set in Bloomsbury. Industry on iPlayer I think is set in the square mile, and The Capture is set in the west end.

Get a recipe box delivery from a London restaurant on Dishpatch - Ottolenghi? Roti King?

ImissyouBR1 · 14/10/2022 08:06

Morning, not so sure how I feel about all the crime comments. We had our house broken into last year and our car keyed on Monday.

😭 we don't have a lot of police in Cornwall

Also have County Lines here too.

Thanks for all the cool suggestions though 😊

I love this artist’s prints when I’m in a London-nostalgic mood:

I'm half asleep but just here to quickly say thank you @corlan I loved those One City bike tours.

Architecture is my passion and I know many of those buildings from working in architecture in London!

I felt all warm and fuzzy and at home again x

If you don't already know them, read the Rivers of London books by Ben Aaronovitch. Better still, listen to the audio books.

They have a very strong sense of place and the small details about pockets of contemporary London really bring it to life.

Hobbes8 · 14/10/2022 08:36

Have you seen Industry? It’s on IPlayer - set in the city so if you worked on Bishopsgate it would be (literally) right up your street.

i used to work for a bank and it made me nostalgia for all the shouty twats on trading floors (although I did rather less snorting cocaine and shagging in toilets).

FinallyHere · 14/10/2022 08:46

M&S have some lovely London themed Christmas Tree decorations.

happyfishcoco · 14/10/2022 09:03

mind the gap

London is too busy for me, I would like to move out....

HazelBite · 14/10/2022 10:10

I've bookmarked that Tube Tent, I'm saving up for that, how absolutely fabulous 😃

Needhelp101 · 14/10/2022 10:14

Sliding Doors is a good London film. Also some bits of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
