My town has a reputation for being unfriendly / snooty and I’m interested to see if it pops up here šŸ‘€

Personally, I find Cardiff and Birmingham to friendly and upbeat cities.

Friendly: Manchester
Not in the least bit: Bristol

Most friendly place I personally have been by far is Middlesborough / Stockton. I used to do a job that involved visiting lots of companies and nowhere else have I had so many people ask me if I'm OK / if I need anything / if I'd like a cup of tea. Not to mention the MD carrying bags for me!

Nat6999 · 14/10/2022 01:21

Sheffield & Mansfield most friendly, Harrogate & London least friendly.

My home city/town has already had praise, but I always find Bolton to be much friendlier šŸ™‚

Interesting what people tend to say about London, that it's so unfriendly etc. I've lived here all my life, and I'd certainly agree that there are many places in the UK where people tend to be chattier with strangers and warmer. But DP and I spent six months in Spain a few years ago, and on hearing we were Londoners, almost everyone we met exclaimed how much they loved it here and how friendly and helpful people were. Of course it was lovely to hear that!

My guess is small towns not on the tourist trail are probably the least friendly to visitors and incomers.

Are you, local?

polkadotpixie · 14/10/2022 06:42

I found people in Northern Ireland very friendly, slightly overwhelmingly so!

Ergonomicallydesigned · 14/10/2022 06:46

I found Cambridge pretty unfriendly. I now live in a market town south of Cambridge which is again pretty unfriendly. Always found the north east to be a pretty friendly place by comparison.

IScreamMonday · 14/10/2022 06:50

Most friendly: Huddersfield
Least friendly: Brighton

AwkwardSquad · 14/10/2022 06:52

The north east is generally a very friendly area but in some parts that can depend on your skin colour.

I’m currently visiting Hull and it’s got a really nice relaxed feel.

Manchester felt really spiky and almost hostile the times I’ve visited so I’m interested to see how many people rate it for friendliness. Maybe it was more about how I was feeling at the time?

whirlyhead · 14/10/2022 06:53

I live in Manchester and don’t find it friendly at all!

I do find london friendly.

Bristol is very friendly. It’s the first thing I noticed when I moved here, people in shops are smily and chatty, and when you’re driving people let you out very readily!

I’ve never really met an unfriendly Bristolian come to think of it.

Bath on the other hand is snooty and up itself.

SuperbOwls · 14/10/2022 07:02

Friendliest is Glasgow, hands down.

Least friendly: every bit of Cornwall I've ever visited.

I find London gets friendlier the further out you go, but I get why it has its unfriendly reputation

Monoprix · 14/10/2022 07:05

I am not sure about towns being friendly as a whole. They are usually a mix of friendly and less friendly people in them. For example I am sure that in a small town not all of the 25000 inhabitants are friendly and welcoming, you’ll get plenty of morose and snobby ones.

faffadoodledo · 14/10/2022 07:08

DD went to Durham university and the locals were lovely (despite some of the arsey behaviour of some of the students). Really lovely, helpful and friendly

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 14/10/2022 07:12

See, I grew up in Newcastle, and I don't think it's friendly so much as chatty. Geordies will talk to anyone, but it doesn't mean they like you. They can be frankly horrible to anyone they decide is a bit "posh" or up themselves - the inverse snobbery is immense.

In contrast where I live now is considered very "naice" and probably snobby, but I've found the people here to be incredibly kind and to really care about their community. They're not falling over themselves to chat to everyone, but if someone needs help they're there in an instant.

DozyFox · 14/10/2022 07:12

I honestly struggling to think of somewhere I actually found unfriendly other than London, but that's an obvious one.

The friendliest cities I've been to definitely have to be Birmingham and Liverpool!

ChakaKhanfan · 14/10/2022 07:13

I find parts of Yorkshire really unfriendly, like miserable and isolating if you are a visitor, Harrogate & Leeds being the worst.

Newcastle and Edinburg are the friendliest.

I live in London, parts are ok, if you are in the East you are going to be good, but south west, I would avoid unless you have lots of money!

Ifailed · 14/10/2022 07:14

'm not sure I want a town or city to be "friendly" if that means striking up random conversations on the bus,

I agree. Being interrogated by a complete stranger who happens to be sat next to me is not 'friendly'.

ImissyouBR1 · 14/10/2022 07:18

Bath is full of snooty rude people
Newcastle and Liverpool really lovely

(Went to university in Bath and was really awful. Many students felt too good to be there and very "don't you know who I am?" Cant believe I stayed for 6 years!)

ImissyouBR1 · 14/10/2022 07:19

(I don't think Truro is very friendly either)

PAFMO · 14/10/2022 07:20

I've lived in 4 cities and not found any of them actively "unfriendly". (Manchester, Liverpool, Canterbury, Nottingham) or "friendly". I think it depends on how you behave towards others. Never had a problem in any of them in this respect.

As a tourist, (and often accompanying heaps of teenagers) Bath, London, Cambridge, always super friendly and helpful.

My top 2 would be Bath and London.

SallyWD · 14/10/2022 07:22

Liverpool is the friendliest city I've ever been to. I live in Leeds and find it friendly. I used to live in Norwich which I absolutely love but must say it wasn't that friendly.

Karmatime · 14/10/2022 07:23

The friendliest place I’ve lived is Brighton. With London it really depends where you live, the naice bits can be stand-offish but most of the areas I lived were friendly. Despite being Cornish, I find Cornwall the least friendly.
