My town has a reputation for being unfriendly / snooty and I’m interested to see if it pops up here šŸ‘€

Personally, I find Cardiff and Birmingham to friendly and upbeat cities.

Least friendly, Cambridge and London. Most friendly, Belfast, Cardiff and Glasgow.

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 13/10/2022 23:12

Has it popped up yet?

Bunce1 · 13/10/2022 23:15

Goasgoe

GinJeanie · 13/10/2022 23:17

Perth in Scotland was one of the friendliest places I ever visited. Ilkley in Yorkshire one of the least... Very subjective obviously

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/10/2022 23:17

In my experience South Wales people are pretty friendly, although a lot of the ones I've met have been people living in England and/or married to English people.

Devon seems to come up a lot on these threads as an unfriendly county but my limited experience has been the opposite.

Hoolihan · 13/10/2022 23:19

I have lived in London & SE England all my life and find Glasgow very noticeably more friendly than anywhere I've lived.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 13/10/2022 23:20

Belfast, Newcastle (& most of Northumberland), Edinburgh and Norwich are the friendliest I’ve been to.

York, Manchester and Brighton the least friendly.

scamander · 13/10/2022 23:22

Hands down, Glasgow. They'll always have my heart. Complete strangers walking you to your destination when lost.
There's something about Glaswegians šŸ„¹ā¤ļøšŸ˜

forgiveormakehimpay · 13/10/2022 23:24

People keep saying Glasgow but aren't they generally that part of Scotland that rip the piss out of each other/call each other unsavoury names, all in jest? So it isn't meant to be rude at all! It's just their way. But if you don't join in and you're easily offended, you'll always be nothing more than a colleague etc?

TroublesComing32 · 13/10/2022 23:25

Hunstanton is the least friendly place I’ve ever been, to say it’s meant to be a tourist destination there seemed to be very few people working in shops and pubs who were willing to pass the time of day. Everywhere else I’ve been people have been pretty friendly especially Scotland and the Lake District.

MidnightConstellation · 13/10/2022 23:28

Anywhere in Surrey is very unfriendly. Gloucester and Cheltenham . Edinburgh is not friendly, I’m sorry.
I was in London recently and was blown away by how friendly I found it, much to my surprise.

Newcastle , very friendly.

CarolShields · 13/10/2022 23:29

I found Stroud a bit weird too. Very strange vibe - people unwilling to give directions. Town centre is nothing but charity shops. Hated it.

AdoptedBumpkin · 13/10/2022 23:41

My guess is small towns not on the tourist trail are probably the least friendly to visitors and incomers.

I think piss-taking is just part of Scottish humour, or at least was when I lived there. Sometimes when I need amusement I look up the history of Wikipedia articles on Scottish placed or cultural icons. Loads of hilarious edits that have to be reversed.

Glasgow I didn't like because I could never tell whether strangers were just being friendly or wanted to kick your head in and I experienced both. But that was back in the 90s when it was a tough place.

Most friendly: Northern Ireland.
Least friendly: South East England generally.

Pruneaux · 14/10/2022 00:02

Anywhere in Scotland. Moved here from a non-English speaking country and, 10 years later, I’m still blown away by the kindness of strangers.

noideabutstilltrying · 14/10/2022 00:04

Bury St Edmunds is faux posh. It's changed into an unfriendly place now.

Best place for friendliness is Liverpool

Time40 · 14/10/2022 00:08

Least friendly: Cambridge

Most friendly: Liverpool

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 14/10/2022 00:11

They're all weird in Holyhead. A truly godforsaken place.

LocalHobo · 14/10/2022 00:15

I find people are usually very welcoming in most places, the exception being Nuneaton and Peterborough.

longcoffeebreak · 14/10/2022 00:21

Manchester, Glasgow, Penarth, Abergavenny, Llangollen, Norwich, Peak district, Cirencester, Winchester all very friendly IME

Bourton-On-The-Water. In fact a large proportion of the Cotswolds in general. I get along with everybody but the undercurrent of snootiness really got to me after a few days. Guess they’re just sick of tourists, I get that. Money definitely doesn’t buy manners tho!

People tend to be very friendly in B’ham and the Black Country IMO.

The Cotswolds gives me the creeps. Tried a holiday there to try to get to like it, didn’t work, left after a few miserable days.
Edinburgh, and surrounding villages, small town, really friendly. Loved it.

Elvisrockstar · 14/10/2022 00:53

The friendliest place I’ve ever been is Liverpool. It’s a great city to visit.

hownowpurplecow · 14/10/2022 01:06

Liverpool is great and scousers are super friendly. Glasgow & Dundee are friendly places too, most of Scotland is except I had a terrible time in Edinburgh but I’m sure there’s bad apples in even the nicest of places!

Hated Leeds & Nottingham, lived in Leeds briefly and couldn’t get away quick enough. Sheffield is nice & I loved my 10 years in London, great sense of community and made some excellent friends. London gets a bad rep but I’d move back any day if it was still affordable.

Wichit · 14/10/2022 01:09

Friendly: Glasgow, Keswick, Cardiff, Belfast, Hull

Unfriendly: Ipswich, York, Aberdeen, Lewes

Trez1510 · 14/10/2022 01:17

I come from one of the most mentioned friendliest places, so it's hard to find somewhere more friendly! šŸ˜›

Unfriendly/odd-vibe places I've been: Oxford and Jersey.

I always felt there was an undercurrent of 'keys in the bowl' going on in those particular places ..... 😬
