Or at least trying to keep warm, and mainly failing.

Upstairs is just so cold. Getting undressed or dressed is horrible ☹️

It's 17 in my house right now and I've got a long sleeve T-shirt on but don't need a jumper yet.

I think you can train yourself to be ok with the cold, living in flats where I had to wear a hat in bed and could see my breath lying in bed when I was a student has made me ok with the cold, we also had no heating for 2 years when our boiler broke and we couldn't afford a new boiler. That was when I found out how glorious an electric blanket is!

Gosh no. I used to live in a flat with electric storage heaters that barely worked and I still can't cope with the cold! Any recommendations for electric blankets

Where are you all that's so cold already?

York, thermometer outside read 4 degrees at 8am when i did the school run.
Tops of 14 later but first thing and late evening it is getting cold

Stiff frost this morning up here in Perthshire and my sodding boiler broke down, so I can’t put it on anyway! The repair chap is coming first thing tomorrow, so I will light my log fire and huddle by it. Thank goodness I have a ticket for the concert hall tonight, so I can be cosy for a few hours.

Surely if it’s not widely used then it’s not needed? The problem with the U.K. is the damp. That’s what causes all the problems. If it’s dry cold it’s probably bearable. Wet cold is horrible.

Ha, ha - if only you could read the comments on MN from people who come here from the UK about our cold, damp houses!! The part of the country where I live is not damp, but it does get cold. We are supposedly in spring and the temp is lucky to reach 13 degrees, and last week we had snow. We also have snow covered mountains close by. It was 4 degrees as I was eating my breakfast this morning and I had no heating on in the house.

onlythreenow · 14/10/2022 04:18

We do have other forms of heating of course, but generally we only heat the living area. Most of us don't have double glazing either.

LearnerCook · 14/10/2022 05:08

I've got a thermal vest undrr my PJs right now. And I bought some of the Heat Holder 'longjohns' yesterday!

I'm too wary of the cost of electricity to put the heating on just yet. But blimey was it cold last night!

ClaryFairchild · 14/10/2022 08:44

@onlythreenow - are you in NZ? I know they had snow recently as my work colleague posted a photo of his parent's back yard.

AdverseXCamber · 14/10/2022 09:25

Where I live it’s been as low as 7 degrees a few evenings. I think under 16 indoors is when it can cause health issues, can anyine confirm the temp as I’m unsure.

Gosh, we are so lucky here. Yes it's been down to 3c overnight, but I never put the heating on overnight anyway, and keep the windows cracked open. BUT, my bathroom rads are hot water fed, so when the hot water comes on in the morning the bathrooms are lovely and warm and the warmth percolates throughout the upstairs. During the day we have had lovely sunshine, so the house has been very warm during the day. So far, we have only had to give the house a shot of heating for an hour at around 8pm. The house is currently running at between 18/19 degrees.
