Or at least trying to keep warm, and mainly failing.

Upstairs is just so cold. Getting undressed or dressed is horrible ☹️

@Bemyclementine

My heating hasn't kicked in yet because the house is over 18 degrees inside.

My house is only 15 years old, think it makes a big difference and I live in the sw

Oh for goodness sake, I'm the summer everyone was complaining it was too hot. It's not even particularly cold and people are already whining.

@Toddlerteaplease

FGS yourself.

Don't open threads that are going to annoy you then complain about people complaining! .

we don't all have furry beasties to keep us warm!!

JamMakingWannaBe · 12/10/2022 19:31

This! I'm happy to wear layers but I bought a tumble dryer to stop the "damp laundry" interior decor style. Now I've just invested in another couple of over radiators airers for when the central heating does go (sparingly) on.

@Gazelda im just hanging it out with stern advice to 'get yourself dried!!'

it is drying. I must look scary 🤣

I did this as a child! I thought those days were over...

I don't mind the cold too much at the moment. But I absolutely hate the constantly damp towels after a shower. And the wet washing all over the house.

We have a plug in towel rail that dries the towels and it's so cheap to run. I love it as no heating required and warm dry towels -we shower twice a day and it dries them perfectly in time!

It's like this but without wings and I think it's 2/3p an hour to run.

This is the reality for those of us in countries where central heating is not widely used. It really isn't that bad, you've just been spoilt!

I'm from a country with no central heating and very low overnight winter temperatures but it wasnt the same as this, namely damp and doesn't warm up much in the daytime. No way could I manage with no central heating here.

Are you somewhere as cold ans wet as the UK?

I've been tempted by these. Stupid question alert:
Do you lay the towels flat or halve them to hang over the rails? Does the material not in contact with the heated rails still get dry?

How many hours do you have it on each day?

A580Hojas · 12/10/2022 20:50

I was given an Oodie recently. It honestly does make a huge difference when you are wearing it. We have hardly had the heating on. I would say give it a go.

Spareline · 12/10/2022 20:59

Seriously? It’s 15 degrees in London and 13 in northern Scotland. My towel rail is coming on and drying the towels.

I have a dehumidifier which is drying washing on the airer.

I’m wearing joggers and a sweatshirt. The end is not nigh. You are not all going to freeze to death or, worse, have to wash your towels more than a couple of times a week.

Surely if it’s not widely used then it’s not needed? The problem with the U.K. is the damp. That’s what causes all the problems. If it’s dry cold it’s probably bearable. Wet cold is horrible.

JamMakingWannaBe · 12/10/2022 21:52

For those wishing to dry towels / bath mats without central heating, try this:
www.robertdyas.co.uk/status-100w-heated-towel-rail-white

It's 7 degrees outside where I am. I've just sat on the loo seat and it was cold! Yes, we may have been spoilt with cheap energy in the past but this winter is not going to be fun.

(although I might investigate the possibility of marketing heated toilet seats!)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/10/2022 22:02

I’m not sure we’ve been ‘spoilt’

What’s spoilt about wanting to be warm?

Saz12 · 12/10/2022 22:02

@JamMakingWannaBe heated toilet seats are rank! Like someone else has been sitting there recently. And can’t help feeling is perfect temperature for bacteria to multiply.

Bemyclementine · 12/10/2022 22:07

@flibbertigibbety 13 inside is grim , my house reached a low of 12.5 one day last winter. It wasn't pleasant. Here in balmy east anglia the lowest its been in my old cold draughty house is 15.5 which is ok for us . The DC don't even notice it, I do think you become acclimatised.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 12/10/2022 22:13

I'm the same. And at work the air con is blasting out freezing air constantly so I'm wearing my coat there!

blusteryshowersaway · 12/10/2022 22:13

Currently 5 degrees where I am. It will be 3 overnight.

We've been spoilt in respect of having (relatively) low cost energy which has meant not everyone has had to worry about the cost of heating their homes, or tumble drying clothes, before now.

I definitely want to be comfortably warm.

We are just 10 days into the new price cap but nights are getting darker, the weather is getting cooler and I can see how some people are fed up with what they are experiencing even now.

PollyCreo · 12/10/2022 22:56

It gets unbearably cold in Mediterranean countries in the winter and houses aren't insulated. The winter is short but people face the same financial problems trying to keep warm - I spent three months wrapped up in onesies and fleecy blankets because I couldn't afford to put my heating on. My username, well!

mondaytosunday · 12/10/2022 23:25

Not that cold here in London yet, but I rarely heat upstairs anyway as I like sleeping in a cold room.
I had a friend in her student dorm it was so cold her shampoo froze! Now that's cold!

justanotherlaura · 12/10/2022 23:42

It's 17 in my house right now and I've got a long sleeve T-shirt on but don't need a jumper yet.

I think you can train yourself to be ok with the cold, living in flats where I had to wear a hat in bed and could see my breath lying in bed when I was a student has made me ok with the cold, we also had no heating for 2 years when our boiler broke and we couldn't afford a new boiler. That was when I found out how glorious an electric blanket is!

Great tip to use these things to dry used towels rather than whole laundry loads. Just as a heads up, the one you linked to would now be more like 8p an hour, assuming a price of 35p per kWh on a 230W appliance. That is still v cheap if you're running it for a couple of hours here and there, but it would add up if left on all night for example. 24/7 would be £13 per week by my calcs.

blusteryshowersaway · 13/10/2022 10:46

It was freezing here this morning. I had to defrost my car at 8.30. 3 degrees only.

Giggorata · 13/10/2022 11:00

I cope with getting out of the shower in the cold by having huge fleecy hooded dressing gowns, which I fling on and then run into the bedroom, to have a quick blast of the hairdryer under them!
If you have enough to have one on the go and one in the wash, it avoids the musty smells. I also wear one over my clothes to save on heating, and have fingerless gloves.
I quite like the grunge wizard look and it makes a lot of difference.

Also have some of those hair turbans, which soak up moisture.
