Plantar Fasciitis - has anyone had this?

I've been diagnosed with this in one foot, slowly getting better.
Have you had it, and what helped you?

I had it as a result of a car accident. Insurance paid for physio, which fixed it. However it's notoriously tricky, and what works for one person might not work for someone else.

Jostly · 12/10/2022 13:02

I had/have something similar (Morton’s neuroma) and I find really comfortable shoes help (padded trainers/sketchers type). I also got a foot massager off Amazon. Whether this actually helps that much, I don’t know, but they are quite fun… oh, and bonus, I’ve just seen it’s on special offer!

I found wearing an arch support helped quite a lot (pretty cheap on Amazon)

I had it for a year after an ankle injury, what cured mine was a combination of the stretches they tell you to do, and Skechers trainers. All sorts of expensive insoles were recommended but did nothing. Within a week of the Skechers- gone.

Beamur · 12/10/2022 13:08

I found exercises to stretch the foot helpful eventually. Simple ones like standing on the edge of a step and lifting up.
Mine twinges occasionally but it's horribly painful when it flares up.
Walking in supportive shoes - I've been wearing walking boots a lot.

OneDayAtATimePlease · 12/10/2022 13:10

Wear something supportive all the time my at home go to are crocs. Hideously ugly but remarkably supportive for plantar. Wear good supportive shoes the rest of the time, trainers are normally the best as a general rule of thumb or any shoe/boot with similar support.

You really don't want to have a flat surface under your feet at all.

I found rolling an aerosol can (like deodorant) under my foot really helped ease the pain too. If you've been given exercises, do them.

Arsewangry · 12/10/2022 13:11

Sketchers go walk memory foam shoes got me around disney land in the middle of a flare up - I swear by them.

Ponderingwindow · 12/10/2022 13:17

Mine is related to really high arches. I wear orthotic shoes at all times, including slippers. My doctor advised me to never take a step without them.

DenholmElliot1 · 12/10/2022 13:20

Mine lasted about 8 months.

Sketchers got rid of it eventually although I obviously don't know whether it would have got better anyway. I've worn nothing but crocs since and have never had any kind of foot problem since.

cloudjumper · 12/10/2022 13:23

Lots of physio/acupuncture
Orthotic insoles
Splint at night
Very supportive shoes (eg no flip-flops) - bin those old, super-comfy ones that you've been wearing for years
No running

EerilyDevilled · 12/10/2022 13:24

I think crocs caused mine, they aren't supportive enough in the arch for me, too squidgy. Proper orthotics (off the shelf) in trainers plus all the stretches, yoga, massage etc helped me. Birkenstocks are great because they have firm arch support too. I still wear crocs occasionally but have to be really careful not to wear them for more than half an hour or so or I can feel the feet start to tighten up again. Skechers are far too squidgy and the podiatrist I saw agreed.

Aggypanthus · 12/10/2022 13:24

I have really high arches. I find wearing high heels is excruciating but I can get away with boots with a heel if I use the inserts they prescribed at the hospital.
Most of the time I wear Crocs as they are really good for this.
I never have a problem these days unless I put a pair of heels on. Even when I get them out just to try on with a dress I know I could not wear them at all.
Crocs are the way forward. There are some really funky ones. I have my eye on the fur lined ones atm

Ballocks · 12/10/2022 13:25

Yes - had it for a good 6 months I think and was
quite painful. Worse in the morning and was like an old woman walking sideways down the stairs one at a time.

@OneDayAtATimePlease gives good advice.

Mine has gone now. Wasn’t caused by an injury, think it was wearing flipflops/bare feet too much in the house. I’m WFH and it was summer so had no support on my feet and pounding around on hard floors. I’m also a really big hiker and found I could walk through it sometimes if I wore a compression sock with my boots.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 12/10/2022 13:26

Sketchers wrecked my feet, so unsupportive. I have very high arches and Achilles tendinitis and can only wear really supportive shoes with orthotic inserts now ☹️

AuntieDolly · 12/10/2022 13:29

Fit flops work for me

KnottyKnitting · 12/10/2022 13:31

I had this for nearly a year. It does heal slowly. Several things helped:

-Supportive shoes with arch inserts.
-Overnight splints which keep your foot at a right angle ( this stops that awful tearing sensation you get when taking first steps when you get up in the morning.)
-Exercises on the edge of a step- toes on the edge and dip
-Draw the alphabet in the air with your toes.
-Rolling a very cold can under the arch of your foot.

hoorayandupsherises · 12/10/2022 13:35

It obviously is very individual as I had set mine off a few weeks ago running in walking boots (not intentional running, chasing an escaped horse ... yes, my life is very much a comedy sketch) and I have been wearing my usual Crocs at home and it's been dragging on. Realised I should change back to FitFlops as they were a miracle cure the first time I had it and of course it's disappeared. Immediately I couldn't feel any pain walking and now three days later of non-stop Fitflop shoe-wearing (I have work shoes with the Fitflop sole) I can only feel it doing yoga.

AriettyHomily · 12/10/2022 13:37

Yes and it's agony. Insoles helped, and rolling foot over a frozen 500ml bottle of water / tennis ball helped.

Badbadbunny · 12/10/2022 13:38

I've had it on and off for years. I use the scholl orthotics insoles specially for plantar fasciitis which really work for me. They have a raised/shaped heel which seems to put the foot in a better position.

BlueKaftan · 12/10/2022 13:41

I wear Skechers and have a ball that I roll with my foot. Very sorry you’re experiencing this, OP. It’s so painful.

forlornlorna1 · 12/10/2022 13:41

Urgh it's miserable isn't it. I had it a few years back now. I used arch supports in my shoes and arch support socks, even wore the socks in bed . And never walk around barefoot, I wore crocs. It took months but got there in the end

2bazookas · 12/10/2022 14:02

Yes, I attended NHS physio (part of GP services) who advised excercises and an insert for shoes. I recovered fully and never had a problem since.

Harrystylestutu · 12/10/2022 14:04

My ten year old has it in both feet. He's autistic, I'm not sure if there's a link as a few children we know have it aswell. He has insoles from the podiatrist and foot excersizes. We were told to avoid shoes like sketchers that we had been recommended as they're too pliable and even though they're comfy they don't give much support

EmmaStone · 12/10/2022 14:09

I had it for quite a while. I wore orthotics recommended by a podiatrist, and found downward dog a helpful stretch (resting one foot on the opposite calf to stretch further). I pretty much wore trainers most of the time too, but that was my normal footwear.

Ultimately, I think the cause was VERY tight calves, I had some massage and the. Started massaging my own calves and some of foot every morning, and that seemed to cure it.

But clearly, everyone's experience is very different!

Barbequebeans64 · 12/10/2022 14:23

I had it severely in both feet and couldn't walk very far. I tried physio for months and eventually got referred for shock wave therapy, haven't had any pain since!
