Do you tip your supermarket delivery driver?

I never do and it had never occurred to me. But a friend just told me they do and now I am wondering if my delivery drivers think I must live in the mean house.

Nope. They don't go over and above IME, well mine don't. That's the only reason I would tip a service provider!

MotherOfPuffling · 11/10/2022 13:15

Not sure what other people do, but I always tip. I factor it into the cost of delivery, and usually give £2. The drivers work really hard, and are really kind. They always bring everything in for me even though they aren’t supposed to because they can see I would struggle. Plus I don’t think they are paid particularly well, especially as this is London and the cost of living is ridiculous.

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/10/2022 13:16

We did during lockdown. Go to the shops now.

bingbummy · 11/10/2022 13:16

No, because I'd find it awkward trying to give them cash, like 'here you go you poor soul'

Is it the done thing?

I tip the uber driver £1 if they help me with my bags, and I always tip a cash cabbbie 50p.

I tip bar staff when paying in cash, about 20p or round up to nearest pound even if that means like an 80p tip.

I buy sarnies and drink for rough sleepers.

This all depends on me not being totally skint (end of the month)

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 11/10/2022 13:17

Nope. It has never even occurred to me until just now!

SGChome20 · 11/10/2022 13:18

It would never occur to me to tip a delivery driver other than for hot food which now I think about it is maybe a bit strange. Why would I tip a takeaway but not my weekly shop I suppose. Where does it end though, Amazon drivers, the postie etc

NCnotmyusualone · 11/10/2022 13:18

Not weekly. I give a big tip for my Christmas order delivery.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 11/10/2022 13:18

Yeah - this is the thing with me. I would actually love to tip the Ocado drivers as they're all brilliant but I feel so awkward. I also get different ones every time (maybe because I'm London?) so I can't just do a nice big Christmas tip or anything - which I'd feel a lot more comfortable with!

I do a bigger Christmas tip. I figure there must be enough people doing it so that all the drivers will end up with something extra🤷‍♀️

CeeJay81 · 11/10/2022 13:20

I don't think they are allowed accept cash tips? So no I don't.

CrappyJob · 11/10/2022 13:21

Nope.

I work for the same company as the one that delivers my groceries. The drivers get paid more than I do. I don't really see why I should tip them.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 11/10/2022 13:24

I do tip my Deliveroo drivers though.

And someone mentioned the postie above. I don't do this but I found out last year that my parents give the postie a Christmas tip! I might give my postie and the DPD man something this year - none of the other couriers are regular round here.

AriettyHomily · 11/10/2022 13:26

Nope.

MsFogi · 11/10/2022 13:27

Nope - I don’t tip, I don’t want to end up living in an economy like America’s.

Sprogonthetyne · 11/10/2022 13:31

I don't, it would feel kind of awkward when your not otherwise handling money, so it would literally just be a £1 or whatever I was handing over. In the days before paying online I would maybe have rounded up/ told them to keep change.

SpinningFloppa · 11/10/2022 13:32

No chance

Do you tip your supermarket delivery driver?
kimchifix · 11/10/2022 13:32

No - i don't get shopping delivered often anymore but I tried to tip the Waitrose guy at Xmas once and he said he wasn't allowed to accept tips, so haven't bothered trying since then!

Heartofglass12345 · 11/10/2022 13:34

No! Some of us don't work or earn less than them. I don't understand tipping people for doing their actual job. I was a nurse, I didn't get tipped lol.
I gave our delivery drivers cold drinks during the heatwave which they were great full for but I'm sure they don't even expect a tip, I'm surprised they are even allowed to accept them

Doggiedoodoos · 11/10/2022 13:39

If you mean the likes of tesco drivers then no as where I am they are not allowed to get a tip and can be fired for it.

Jackienory · 11/10/2022 13:40

I give them or anybody, the same tip I get for doing my job.

TimeForMeToF1y · 11/10/2022 13:40

What type of deliveries?

I can't imagine that anyone tips the Evri driver 😂

If you check the eleventy billion other other threads on the same question I'm sure you'd find that the concensus is that supermarket drivers shouldn't be tipped but food takeaway drivers can be

Lozza70 · 11/10/2022 13:46

Supermarket delivery drivers are not supposed to accept tips. They could be disciplined if it was found out they accepted.

REP22 · 11/10/2022 13:51

I wanted to tip the Sainsbury's delivery man on one occasion, he'd been very helpful. But he said that they weren't allowed to accept tips.

TheTeddyBears · 11/10/2022 14:16

I don't for supermarket deliveries but I tip takeaway deliveries. It just feels different a bit awkward and they now never seem to offer to bring it in the house just dump at the door so I def don't feel encouraged to. Also they get paid about £11/£12 an hour I heard so aren't as poorly paid as takeaway drivers.

My dh always says oh ur so embarrassing u shld be tipping them but no it wld seem weird handing over £1-£2 and I know they aren't supposed to accept so they might refuse it.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/10/2022 14:21

No. I didn't know this was a thing. This isn't really a thing, right? Is this why the Ocado van man leaves with a cat's bum face?
