What would your (sensible) ideal home have?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/10/2022 10:44

I say sensible as in affordable and not Lottery win/dream home levels.

I currently live in a (albeit very nice) flat, so my perfect (acheiveable) family home would have:-

  • A lawned back garden with space at the back for a couple of veg planters, ideally south facing.
  • A kitchen big enough to put a sofa in (along with the dining table it currently has)
  • a drive - never actually been bothered about this but we have some new flat seeing built opposite and street parking is about to become WAY worse
  • a normal size for the third bedroom (scouting for house moves and all three beds I can find, the third bed is a boxroom over the stairs)
  • terraced - I'll trade off any possible noise disturbance for the fact that I won't lose heat out of a gable end!
  • to take my current laundry room, log burner and office space with me in addition to what's there

Simple pleasures really!

I'd love an extra living room for reading and playing board games with no TV allowed!

TescoCustomerService · 11/10/2022 10:48
  1. Garden large enough that I could plant some large trees
  2. A basement
  3. Real fireplace

That's it really

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/10/2022 10:49

Garden big enough for a swing seat and football goals

Borracha · 11/10/2022 10:49

A utility room
Some kind of playroom so the kids' crap doesn't encroach into my nice grown up living space
A downstairs toilet
An ensuite for the master

I didn't grow up with any of these things and we obviously survived but now we have them in our house, I would struggle to give them up. My kids' bedrooms are pretty small and my boys currently share but it doesn't matter as they only use them for sleeping - all their 'stuff' is in the playroom.

Storage! My house doesn't have ANY. Apart from the loft, & I'm not agile enough to be up & down to that all the time. Other than that, I'm happy!

Oh yes!! With a nice big round table for everyone to sit at and play.

Square rooms was my one requirement.

The living room isn't square Shock but all the other rooms are!

Vallmo47 · 11/10/2022 10:52

In my dream home (which needs to be affordable), I’d have the following…

  • A decent sized kitchen with ample storage. Everything is currently built in which looks smart but doesn’t leave room for extras. I’d love to have a dining table in there too.
  • Separate space for use as front room/dining. It’s all well & good my current one is a very good size, but sometimes you want to have a space to yourself, away from everyone and even with a large room you’re sharing one space, which isn’t ideal.
  • Utility room with sink - I come from a country where every house has this and I hate bringing my washing into my kitchen space. This room ideally has space for hanging laundry as well.
  • Storage rooms, ideally 3 or more.
  • I rated bedroom size highly when purchasing my current home, only to discover the only god damn time I spend in there I’m sleeping and in need of very little space to do so. Ideally 2 larger rooms for kids and 1 smaller for me and my husband, plus one extra to use as PC room.
  • A south facing garden that isn’t the size of a stamp.
  • A porch!!!
  • A garage large enough to fit a car, bikes, scooters, tools etc AND our car. Or at least a private drive.
This was fun OP. :)
girlmom21 · 11/10/2022 10:52

Oh and I wanted a big hallway and a big landing which we got too

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 11/10/2022 10:52

Separate computer room/office. And some internal cat flaps/tunnels so I can shut the doors without the cats complaining. Underfloor hearing throughout, and solid walls everywhere for sound insulation and ease of putting up shelves etc.

Nw22 · 11/10/2022 10:56

-large kitchen dining family room
-driveway
-upstairs utility room
-large walk in shower
-easy to maintain garden

SatinHeart · 11/10/2022 11:01

We recently moved and our big tickboxes were:

Kitchen you could fit a table in
Decent size garden
Driveway parking
Garage
Utility room
Home office space

If I was being greedy, next time I'd want a walk-in pantry as well!

grey12 · 11/10/2022 11:18

All one level

Sea view

Just enough rooms for us but decent sized

OurChristmasMiracle · 11/10/2022 11:24

a 3 bed semi with a not to large grass garden and patio to sit on or a conservatory(both would be nice)

a bath not a shower in the bathroom and maybe an ensuite for the master bedroom

parking either front drive or on road with no permit

nice size kitchen

also a nice size pantry

close to hospital and shops

not directly on a main road

somewhere close to some nice outdoor space

Sulusu · 11/10/2022 11:38

All one level.
Not overlooked.
Off road parking.
Wide passages and doorways.

I am likely to be in a wheelchair in later life, so am planning on a bungalow with the above.

It's a shame that bungalows aren't really being built anymore, makes no sense with an aging population. Not everyone wants a flat to retire in.

MotherWol · 11/10/2022 11:40

In London, so I fear any of these things would result in lottery-win pricetags, but I can dream:

  • Three bedrooms
  • A home office that's not also part of the living room or a bedroom, DH and I WFH alternate days so it doesn't need to be big enough for us both but probably not a box room
  • A garden big enough to dry laundry or eat outside on a sunny day, with room for a shed for DH's tools/bikes/stuff
  • Close to DD's school so we didn't have to start from scratch
  • A kitchen that's big enough for a dining table, or a separate dining room, I don't really like all open-plan
  • On a side street rather than a main road
PuttingDownRoots · 11/10/2022 11:42

Currently I'd like an extra toilet, an office which isn't in the conservatory, a garage/proper storeroom for camping and watersports equipment and an extra bedroom.

Not fussy at all really!

So basically a modern 4 bedroom house, but with decent sized rooms and proper sized garden, that isn't on top of the neighbours (not so much on the same street, its in front and behind)

Zipps · 11/10/2022 11:52

We choose our home because of
Two decent sized bathrooms
Double garage and drive
Smallish but private garden
Open plan kitchen/diner/living room plus separate reception room
Lots of natural light
Log burner
Some character
Near countryside
Only enough space/rooms that we need

No to narrow rooms, north facing garden or near a pub.

SallyWD · 11/10/2022 12:19

A good size garden (with lawn), good kitchen with lots of cupboard space, dining area, enough bedrooms for a home office and guest rooms (our friends and family stay often so we do need guest rooms), a drive, more than one bathroom (again for guests). We moved last year and got all of the above. I would have preferred a slightly bigger garden but you always have to compromise on something! Feel very fortunate.

SallyWD · 11/10/2022 12:20

Almost forgot - location is essential! Nice, safe area with access to green spaces.

MoltenLasagne · 11/10/2022 12:24

A big dining table. Doesn't have to be fancy but I'd love to have round friends without having to pull up an extra table that's slightly too short, or try to squeeze 8 round a table ideally designed for 4.

Auldspinster · 11/10/2022 12:29

Utility room with a pulley and big sink and a kitchen large enough for a big scrubbed pine table.

User57713 · 11/10/2022 12:32

A laundry room with space for drying and folding clothes
A cloakroom or boot room with room for dirty wellies and football boots, lots of space for hanging up wet jackets so they can dry.

If I had those 2 things I'd be so happy. My house would be so much tidier.

AnApparitionQuipped · 11/10/2022 12:33

I would like quirky layout, exposed brick walls, exposed beams, galleried landing even if tiny one, detached or link-detached, 3 bedrooms, minimum two toilets, bath NOT shower, small, manageable, enclosed outside space, off road parking for min. 1 car, within 2 miles of a railway station, walking distance from a general shop or supermarket, kitchen big enough to accommodate a table even if small, small conservatory or sunporch, hallway with space for shoes and coats, ultility room and ideally a view of hills with large electricity pylons marching over the horizon.

I spend a lot of time on Rightmove.

Topgub · 11/10/2022 12:34

A small courtyard garden

A drive

A bedroom each, with a spare.

A dining/kitchen room.

A utility room

A bedroom with an ensuite
