What do you all do for sat-nav these days?

Hello

I've always relied on a TomTom mounted on my dashboard. I liked that it was separate to my phone. But TomToms seem to becoming obsolete with everyone just using Google Maps?

Google Maps doesn't give you speed trap warnings does it? Is it any good for real-time traffic updates eg avoid certain routes? I suppose it must be good for having up to date maps eg when new roads are built.

How does Google Maps link it with What 3 Words which I've just discovered?

Interested in what you all do.

Thanks

Waze also works on Apple CarPlay btw.

Am I the only person that doesn't use a satnav?????

I don't, just drive and hope to get there.

Google Earth the actual place /road before departing.

Memorise map (key route, main junctions) and go.
Stop and consult map if needed (rare).

It helps I visualise locations 'as a map' . Is clearly an inherited thing as DD1 does it too.

I still tend to do that even though the map is talking to me in the car. I head towards a town knowing what direction I'm supposed to be going and know the next town along so just read road signs as I go. Handy if the map or phone go haywire.

Google maps through auto android. We're rural and for some reason Waze doesn't like the area where we live but I will use it if we're going further afield.

EricNorthmanYesPlease · 10/10/2022 21:22

Waze. And if you're worried about it using your battery, just charge it in The car.
Waze is great because it gives realtime info on accidents etc. It once stopped me being held on the motorway in a traffic jam for 5 hours. 3 metres before the junction, it diverted me.

I also use Waze, which is powered by Google maps but has loads of features like finding petrol stops & restaurants on the way.

The only downside is that if you’re in an area with limited signal then it can “lose” you. I used to use the TomTom app for that reason (as it downloads the maps) but it has an annual subscription & I’d just discovered waze.

You can find petrol stops and restaurants on Google maps too.... just use the 'search along route' option.

Old school TomTom for me. I tried google maps on my phone, but I couldn't get it to stay in the cradle thing I bought for the car so went back to my TomTom (well I bought a newer one) Mine warns of traffic updates and speed cameras.

I do realise that this will also eventually die and I'll have to use the phone (android), but right now I'm driving a 61 reg Focus and there is no big screen to look at while driving. So its not realistic for me to use my phone if I don't want to pick it up all the time.

I also use google maps before I set off, but that's more to look at the final destination (not the film) to see what it looks like.

Same! Used Waze to get to a nearby village recently and Waze took me a long way round through some very tiny roads. Used Google maps on the way back and it was spot on.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 10/10/2022 21:38

I use the maps app on my iPhone via apple car play.

newtb · 10/10/2022 21:49

There's also Mappy which pings if you go over the limit.

colouringindoors · 10/10/2022 21:51

Google Maps every day.

Has speed camera warnings, real time speed and traffic situation.

bloodywhitecat · 10/10/2022 21:55

Waze, it saved me from hell on the M11 today and rerouted me before I could even see the tailbacks. I sometimes use the car's inbuilt satnav but prefer Waze.

wohmum · 10/10/2022 22:03

Waze - real time traffic updates are great , but as a pp said , it occasionally redirects to a more fiddly route to save a minute

Lellochip · 10/10/2022 22:08

I have it inbuillt to the car, though until I ran an update you couldn't even enter the full postcode so it just aimed you to the vague area. But it's running on 7 year old maps, and has no live traffic etc, so I rely on Google on my phone. Sometimes I use the car then decide I need google, and then spend the rest of my journey watching both give conflicting directions! Grin

Branster · 10/10/2022 22:12

Could you have your phone plugged in to charge during driving- the usb charge point which is where the cigarette lighter used to be? Or if you haven't got a charge point, use a battery bank to charge your phone?

JohnsShirt · 10/10/2022 22:16

Inbuilt and also phone.
I Iisten to one and look at the other!

gretr · 10/10/2022 22:18

Waze. All the cab drivers use it, gives you live updates and people regularly update about accidents in real time. Saved so many hours in driving both in the uk and abroad.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/10/2022 22:26

I have the Tom Tom
App on my phone and it works on Apple car play. I don't like Google maps. And my Sister lives in the Lake Distrct, and it doesn't work if there is no phone signal. Tom Tom is offline, so not affected. My friend swears by Waze.

FarmhouseLiving22 · 10/10/2022 22:27

Always Google maps. It gives traffic updates and will update the route to avoid congestion etc. It also shows you the speed limits and also you can report if there's a speed trap so you get alerts.

lljkk · 10/10/2022 22:29

Sometimes Google Maps just doesn't tell me something, doesn't explain a turn, so I miss it if not studying the screen (I drove a lot to new places by myself this year). Seriously stressful.

G-Maps makes my phone overheat something rotten; literally struggle to keep the phone in charge

I had phone mounted on vents for G-Maps, but it fell off & cracked the screen. So now phone is back on passenger seat and I mostly listen not look at it.

I haven't had good experiences with sat-nav-dedicated devices either, except when built into hire cars : mostly good, but get confusing when American freeway literally has 3 exits in space of a half mile, irk.

Fizbosshoes · 10/10/2022 22:35

For long journeys I usually use Waze and I like that it tells you the best time to leave/how long it will take at various times of day although it lied about cornwall
...but I instinctively go to googlemaps for short journeys. It was completely bonkers on Saturday though and I'm sure took me a way more complicated way than entirely necessary! (Although could have been avoiding traffic jams due to train strikes. Maybe)
My car is about 16 years old and doesn't have built in sat nav.

cakeorwine · 10/10/2022 22:38

I have a teenager. Incredibly useful but a bit sarcastic with directions. And sometimes a bit late. Take the next major right. Well, how are we defining major? And then getting annoyed because I miss a turn because of his late instructions.

But he's very helpful at finding places for me.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 10/10/2022 22:48

I generally if in my city just look at the map on phone and make mental pointers. And generally get there fine. I know all of the city pretty well.

If further i tend to google map and have phone in center console bit dont look just listen.

RamblingFar · 10/10/2022 22:49

I use Google Maps. Has the speed cameras on and plays and audio tone warning. Will also show temporary speed cameras if others have added them to the map. Warns about stalled vehicles, objects on road, lane closures... again users can update the map in real time. Monitors traffic and suggests different routes if necessary. Can be set to show the speed limit and your current driving speed. Also it reads out my messenger, texts and Whatsapp, waits for my reply and then types and sends it for me. Can download the map if going somewhere that when I set off will have no signal. Once it's picked a route and started, it doesn't need to worry about intermittent signal. If you get very bored it will tell you jokes or set riddles - handy for motorway jams. Works with my Audible to auto pause my audio book when it needs to talk to me, then resumes the book.

In other words it's very handy!

I tend to use it even if I know exactly where I'm going. Probably why my family often get stuck in traffic and I don't

I had one of those, didn't know left from right and once took us an hour out of our way. I threw him out of the car sacked him.
