What do you all do for sat-nav these days?

Hello

I've always relied on a TomTom mounted on my dashboard. I liked that it was separate to my phone. But TomToms seem to becoming obsolete with everyone just using Google Maps?

Google Maps doesn't give you speed trap warnings does it? Is it any good for real-time traffic updates eg avoid certain routes? I suppose it must be good for having up to date maps eg when new roads are built.

How does Google Maps link it with What 3 Words which I've just discovered?

Interested in what you all do.

Thanks

Another vote for Waze. It has more up-to-date travel info than my inbuilt car sat nav.

I always plug it in to use it to stop it draining the battery.

TonTonMacoute · 10/10/2022 17:07

Another Waze user here.

Pashazade · 10/10/2022 17:12

Definitely Waze. It has a bit of a blind spot about one route I use regularly, probably not enough data in the system, and is obsessive about 1 minute quicker routes which are a more annoying/less smooth drive, but hands down it is usually very accurate and the real time updates are excellent.

StillNotWarm · 10/10/2022 17:12

How to you all mount the phone? DH has bought me 3 different mounts, and they are all pants compared to my TomTom, but the apps are better on the phone.....

EvilRingahBitch · 10/10/2022 17:17

I find Google unbeatable for real-time traffic data, and instant alternative route planning. If someone has broken down and a queue has started to build up then Google will let you know in seconds, even on the smallest road. If I'm going to be driving into the sticks I download the map beforehand so I can carry on using GPS if I lose 4G.

However, I admit that it's not great at prompting you to be in the correct lane, so if Waze is good at that then that's a real plus point.

Google Earth the actual place /road before departing.

Memorise map (key route, main junctions) and go.
Stop and consult map if needed (rare).

It helps I visualise locations 'as a map' . Is clearly an inherited thing as DD1 does it too.

This is a good tip (although I'm terrible at remembering directions). When I worked in the community I used to Google street view the house I needed to visit - especially in rural villages, to help me know what I was looking for.

I used to use Google maps but then saw Waze being suggested on a previous thread so gave it a go.

I think I prefer Waze now as the voice instructions seem to be less likely to make you miss your turning and it verbally alerts you to traffic, hazards, speed etc.

You can also record your own voice on it (or pick from a big list of voices) so your kids can record their own voices so they are giving you directions. My 3 year old loves hearing his own voice!

I did once have Brian Blessed's voice on for a laugh. It was funny, it was too distracting to keep 😀

sunshineandsuddenshowers · 10/10/2022 17:26

Waze Amaze.

its brilliant. Has saved us HOURS.

also, it seems to manage all the school street timed closures round us waaaaay better than Google maps which makes no sense given that they are supposedly the same. But they aren’t… Waze is better!

Dougieowner · 10/10/2022 17:32

Am I the only person that doesn't use a satnav?????

StillNotWarm · 10/10/2022 18:07

No, Doogie, I'm sure you aren't the only one.
I probably only use one 3 or 4 times a year. But when you are driving somewhere new, especially on your own, they can be really useful.

Nat6999 · 10/10/2022 18:11

Built in sat nav, shows up road works & delays live.

Pashazade · 10/10/2022 18:14

Waze uses Google Maps as it's basis but Google doesn't have the real time update stuff going on which is generated by people using Waze.
@StillNotWarm mount depends on the car, I have air vents front and center so use a spider mount that has 8 bendy legs so 4 get wedged into the vents and the other 4 support the phone, two at the bottom one at either side.
I have a windscreen suction mount too which was a sprung grip for a hire car that didn't have vents in a convenient place.

EvilRingahBitch · 10/10/2022 18:16

Google does have real-time feedback - you can see it happening.

savehannah · 10/10/2022 18:16

My in car sat nav is rubbish and doesn't update or know where traffic jams are until you're in one. So I use Google maps on my phone with it plugged into the car to charge while driving.

Northernsoullover · 10/10/2022 18:20

I use Google maps. I've got Android auto on my car which is fantastic as the map comes up on my car screen..
I keep meaning to try out Waze. I was impressed by it when it told my taxi driver that there was a broken down vehicle in the hard shoulder.

AnApparitionQuipped · 10/10/2022 18:27

Google maps on phone. It doesn't warn of speed cameras but it does update with real time traffic, which TomTom never did. I miss the choice of voices on the TomTom though!

Dougieowner · 10/10/2022 17:32

Am I the only person that doesn't use a satnav?????

I do a long commute a couple of times a week that I could do in my sleep I have driven it so often. It's still good to have a heads up of traffic problems to avoid the worst.

Rosehugger · 10/10/2022 18:32

Google maps and it comes up on the screen of the car with my phone plugged in and Android Auto.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2022 18:43

We used to use TomTom, then google maps, via Apple car play in one of our cars. Phone battery is no issue, the CarPlay cable charges the phone, and we have a charging cable in each car as well anyway.

Just recently google maps is getting weirdly confused about closures on the M6 (there's been at least one MN thread). First it wasn't giving any warning of the closure, people were getting stuck on the A road alternative. Then yesterday it said we should use the A road (which had delays) despite showing no issues on the motorway. Fortunately DH had installed Waze, that said to use the motorway. We did, it was fine.

So I've just installed Waze today too.

Sparklingbrook · 10/10/2022 18:44

Google Maps via Apple Car Play has got me everywhere I needed to be, warning of speed cameras and hazards on the way. I always have it on even when I know where I am going as it has speed limits and indicates better quicker routes and traffic jams.

EfficientDynamics · 10/10/2022 18:56

Google Maps but don't often go places I don't know

Handy for live traffic updates

ShirleyHolmes · 10/10/2022 19:07

Waze user here; love it. It gives more notice for turn offs than Google maps does which is crucial for me because I do lots of town driving to see clients in unfamiliar places

TheOrigRights · 10/10/2022 19:57

Waze on boyband mode

Twospaniels · 10/10/2022 20:05

Waze

SheWoreYellow · 10/10/2022 20:07

Google maps - traffic info is great.
Regarding charging, charge it in your car?
