Duvet togs!

geraniumthefirst · 08/10/2022 22:08

Ok, help me out here, with a very random question about duvet togs...

Trying to decide what tog to get dd for her new bed, can anyone tell me what sort of tog will do for all year round for a child that doesn't run particularly hot or cold. I am SO confused. According to my Amazon order from years ago, she currently has a 4 tog... what's the difference between a 4 tog and a 10.5 tog, which seems to be the next step in most retailers?

What does a tog mean? WHAT DOES IT EVEN MEAN?!? 🤯🤯🤯

Any advice on togs appreciated!

4 is a light summer weight, 10 tog is autumn going into winter and 13 is very warm. I would get an “all seasons” one made up of two duvets that you can fasten together. We have them and it means you have duvets for any weather. Everywhere sells them

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 08/10/2022 22:11

I have no idea what Tog any of us have.

They have duvets, pj's and a blanket on their beds. In summer, if it's cracking the flags, we take the duvet off.

If they feel chilly getting into bed, we use a microwave wheat cushion.

Togs - no idea

Mooloolabababy · 08/10/2022 22:14

4 tog is very thin. We all have 10.5 togs on our beds that last most of the year, but have just bought 13.5 togs for the thick of winter as want to try not to put the heating on so much.

My kids are adults now but they had/have 3 tog in the summer and 9 in the winter, we've got 4.5 in the summer and 9 for the winter but we never used the winter one last year. We're in northern England.

Horsemad · 08/10/2022 22:15

You can get 7 tog from some places.

PriamFarrl · 08/10/2022 22:17

I personally used to have a 4 in the summer and a 9 in the winter, with a blanket of I was chilly as it’s easy to move if I warm up. However I switched to a wool duvet a couple of years ago and I’ve kept the same one all year round, even this summer!

RedRobyn2021 · 08/10/2022 22:17

How old is your daughter?

All toddler duvets are 4 tog, you're meant to dress the child in more layers. They don't have higher togs for toddlers because they can easily over heat.

Sorry I can't explain all the togs, our winter duvet is 13.5 tog

I think there is a guide on dunelm website?

EcoCustard · 08/10/2022 22:19

Tog means the amount of warmth it provides. Kids have a 2.5 duvet for the late spring & summer months. Winter duvets are 13 tog and I put them on today. Our house & bedrooms are very hot in the sunnier months but freezing in the Autumn & Winter. I have a 2.5 tog but winter is 7.5 tog as I like to be colder. We have feather, kids have microfibre ones.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 08/10/2022 22:20

However - Asda brushed cotton bedding is toasty!

(Can't buy expensive stuff because the dog eats it)

geraniumthefirst · 08/10/2022 22:22

She is going to be five, her new bed is part of her bday present etc. Just need to decide on a bloody tog!!!

She's been fine so far with the 4 tog, wearing long pjs this evening and just the duvet... So I guess she doesn't run particularly cold.

I just want a duvet that will do all year round, obviously can add blankets in winter if she's cold. I'm thinking the 10.5, or will that be too hot come spring?

What age is your child?
Both my dcs use a 4.5tog year round although they have an option of 10.5tog in the winter

Dh/I use 4.5tog in summer and 10.5tog in winter. We haven't changed to the heavier one yet

dementedpixie · 08/10/2022 22:25

Maybe 4.5tog with an optional blanket when it's colder?
I'm sure you can get 7 and 9 tog too

yerdaindicatesonbends · 08/10/2022 22:26

Our whole family use 4tog all year round. We just layer up clothes/blankets appropriately. But everyone’s different, and I would much rather be too cold than too hot when trying to sleep.

sjpkgp1 · 08/10/2022 22:27

Always a pleasure to watch Rhod Gilbert on the tog rating discussion, which is indeed confusing (watch from 1minute 27 seconds in to prove that you are not the only person to be confused by this)
But on the practical advice front, my four kids have 10.5 tog for most of the year round (North of England) and it is easy to supplement with a hot water bottle or a soft blanket or two for colder nights. 4 tog is lightweight, summer duvet in my view. 13.5 togs is not that much different from 10.5 togs (I realise I am starting to sound like an expert now, and as Rhod points out, nobody is !) but I can imagine 13.5 togs, in August, in London must feel like sleeping under a George Forman grill. I'd also go for the standard washable stuff personally. The bigger the tog, and the more expensive the filling, the harder it is to get in your machine. Good luck x

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 08/10/2022 22:30

4.5 tog all year round here. It’s very thin but I like it. I have another at the end of my bed and pull it up if I get cold in the night.

geraniumthefirst · 08/10/2022 22:35

Haha, I did wonder when someone would mention Rhod Gilbert! Legend.

We are in London where obvs it doesn't get particularly cold... although her new room is not double glazed...

Currently got a 4.5 and a 10.5 in my Argos shopping basket... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I was so confused by this last week, I asked my friends and basically bought what they had for their DC, which is 10.5. It seemed on the warm side for me but I’m desperate for DS (4) to start sleeping fucking through and I thought making him toasty might be one way to help.

AriettyHomily · 08/10/2022 22:39

We've all got 10.5 but I'm thinking of changing down to 7.5 with blankets, also SE but I'm peri and my kids are sweat buckets. 13.5 would be awful.

GodspeedJune · 08/10/2022 22:44

Could you get a 7 tog as a middle ground?

I’m still using a 4.5 but my house is well insulated. Had a 10.5 tog last winter but was boiling under there. Have a new 7.5 tog I’ll be changing to in the next few weeks.

saltofcelery · 08/10/2022 22:48

We have 10s and 13s - not sure which are on right now, also weighted blankets for all of us apart from in summer when it's a duvet or blanket.

AlwaysLatte · 08/10/2022 22:49

My sons both have 10.5 tog in the winter and 4.5 in the summer. This post is a good opportunity to remind me how silly the half size is!

AlwaysLatte · 08/10/2022 22:50

NB all the beds have fleecy throws available in case of needing a little extra warmth.

Berlioz23 · 08/10/2022 22:52

Seems I’m in the minority and I live in the north but still have my 1.5 tog duvet on. In November I’ll change to a 4.5 but anything more than that I wouldn’t be able to sleep. Children don’t feel the cold as much as they have more brown fat so I’d probs go for the 4 one, especially with you living in London.

fairtrauchled · 08/10/2022 22:54

I use a 4.5 tog duvet all year round and live in Scotland.I hate being too hot in bed.

^agree with all this… I have just switched my own 10.5 all seasons duvet to a 13 for tonight. You can also get 14 tog for really cold weather (but I think many people would just throw a blanket on top)

Look for a set which is 4.5 & 7 that clips together (supermarkets sell them, also Argos etc). Use the 7 for a bit then clip both on for coldest part of winter - you can always add a blanket on top if needed

14 is really really warm so might be overkill unless your house is v cold
