How are people warm enough with their houses at 18 degrees?

My heating is set at 21, and I'm still cold!! But I keep reading on here that people have their heating set at 18.

I'm already wearing a jumper and fluffy socks. Sitting on the sofa with a blanket. I am OK with it at this temperature but feel that I should be trying to reduce it further.

Am I just a wuss?Grin

we've always had our heating at 18, and it's fine for us. We work.from home, but I don't get cold. We turn it down at night and always sleep with the window open.

I'm in just a dressing gown and mine is set to 15! I'm toasty.

I'd sit outside in a tshirt at 18! Are you always so nesh?

Yes!

I never monitor the temperature really, but I have found the last few days cold, but not unbearably so. I do feel the cold really easily though, and although I haven’t brought out winter coats and boots yet, I have switched to wearing woolly jumpers and a dressing gown in the house, and a jumper + leather jacket if heading out.
Our central heating is used all year round to heat our water but we haven’t resorted to using it to warm the house yet.

Nyfluff · 08/10/2022 22:17

Our house has been 15-16 the past fortnight and I'm currently in a single layer of PJs and under a blanket. I'm feeling cold and have popped a heater on for a bit, i'll be fine with it at 15 once I'm asleep though.

23 degrees? No wonder we’re facing a climate emergency.

Agree! I have a onesie on and slippers. The house is 17.5 degrees and I will not be putting the heating on yet. If you wear warm clothing you are much less likely to need heating during what is currently quite a mild autumn.

NeedWineNow · 08/10/2022 22:22

I've just looked at our thermostat. It's 19 at the moment and our heating is set to come on if it drops below 17. We're both in joggers and long sleeved t-shirts with a cardi/zip up top respectively. I'm tucked under one of our lightweight throws but that's not unusual at any time. No plans for the heating to go on any time soon, we'll manage with extra layers unless we get a real cold snap.

Scepticalwotsits · 08/10/2022 22:22

Ours is set to 16, but is switched off atm so it doesn’t trigger at night.

we normally set time for wake up and evening return once it starts to drop cold.

dressing gowns, slippers and winter pyjamas all help.

Branleuse · 08/10/2022 22:25

18 is a bit chilly. 19 is ok. I used to be really cold at 18, but last winter i did get used to it eventually

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/10/2022 22:15

Feel too guilty to whack it up, though. We all need to get used to using less, don't we? Just wish it wasn't so miserable being cold, though!

I envy all these people who feel warm at 18 degrees!!

Not your fault really. Flowers

My DH is always 'cold' between 1st October and 1st April. Drives me nuts sometimes. He was whining the other day that he was 'freeeezing!' and the temperature was 18C outside, with the sun shining. Felt like 23C in the sun.

I think he just automatically thinks.. 'Ooooh, it's October, I MUST BE COLD!' And instantly starts saying he is cold. It was not cold, and HE was not cold. I tell him to stop moaning and the heating is NOT going on, as I am not sitting in my bra and knickers with the fan on. He just puts a few layers on, and a fleece, and he's fine within a few minutes!

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 08/10/2022 22:26

My house is currently 18, and I’m sat here with the back door open and in shorts and tshirt. Everyone is different. Our heating don’t go on unless the house goes below 12.

vinoandbrie · 08/10/2022 22:27

The house thermostat says 18.5 right now, but I’m in a room with a log burner and have had that going since about 6pm, and very grateful I’ve been of it too! It’s dying now but still toasty in the room.

If I were sitting elsewhere in the house I’d be very cold and uncomfortable by now and would have gone to bed to be under the duvet. The past few nights I’ve felt cold in bed too!

Calmdown14 · 08/10/2022 22:28

I live in North Scotland. I'd consider 18 degrees an excellent summer's day!

Surely you can't be measuring the temperature correctly

steppemum · 08/10/2022 22:30

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 08/10/2022 21:46

No, I take them with a vitamin c supplement or sometimes with orange juice. For some reason, my body doesn't seem to be absorbing it or retaining it.

some people simply cannot absorb iron via tablets.
Even alongside viatmon C.

Iron deficiency really does make you cold. You can get liquid iron supplements which are easier to absorb.
Another really good source is dried apricots!

FourTeaFallOut · 08/10/2022 22:31

I'm sure 18c would be fine for us if we kept the thermostat in the hallway - which is the coldest part of our house.

StClare101 · 08/10/2022 22:31

We heat our house to 22 in winter in the main living areas. I’m prepared to make other trade offs to be comfortable in my own home. Only certain sections though as the kids don’t feel the cold and have an allergic reaction to trousers - shorts all year round for them - so we don’t put the heating on on their level until half an hour before bed time so they go to bed cosy. Our bedroom only goes on at nine thirty for half an hour at night so we go to bed warm, and 6am - 7am in the morning.

WaddleAway · 08/10/2022 22:33

It’s still pretty mild at the moment where I am (the midlands). Our heating isn’t switched on yet but if it was I can’t imagine it would click on except maybe in the early hours of the morning (usually have it set to 18). I’m just glad it’s such a mild autumn so far as we can’t afford to put the heating on for a while yet.

Abraxan · 08/10/2022 22:33

Being cold causes additional pain in my joints. It might not be formally identified but cold really does have an impact on my arthritis.
18c was far too cold inside for me.
Thermostat is currently 20c but think we will need to put it up u til the windows are replaced later this year as the draught means it is still too cold.
Wearing extra layers just doesn't help when it comes to ambient temperature.
I think 22c for my thermostat is my ideal in the evenings/day, lower overnight.

RewildingAmbridge · 08/10/2022 22:34

Ours is on 18 but house has been sitting at 20/21 without heating on, it's been sunny and bright and we have big windows so getting curtains open early for the greenhouse effect and closed as soon as the sun goes down

Abraxan · 08/10/2022 22:34

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/10/2022 20:19

DP has just informed me that our heating won’t click on unless it goes below 7.

Fucking 7!

I’m actually on board. I have plenty of warm clothes and boots and many blankets.

DS doesn’t feel the cold. He’s fine.

7?

Was told when my new boiler was fitted to have the minimum temperature at 16c ti prevent damage, much higher than 7!

OldFan · 08/10/2022 22:34

I agree this autumn @MrsBennetsPoorNerves . I keep having to turn it up to 20 for some reason.

BeanStew22 · 08/10/2022 22:35

Blueink · 08/10/2022 22:11

@BeanStew22 doesn't electric blanket use a lot of energy?

Hi @Blueink : apparently they cost less than 50p to run for 8 hours, I would use them in the day not the night

If sitting still you can put it on for 10 mins to warm up & then switch off - they keep that heat for an hour or so (I have been able to switch mine off). I think they are generally much much cheaper vs heating the house if you are 1-2 people: I only get cold when sitting (either work or watching TV etc)

Beer garden weather 👍

I'm in bed with 2 fans going at the end ......😵‍💫

nopuppiesallowed · 08/10/2022 22:37

I'm cold if the house is only at 18 degrees but our house is difficult to heat. It's 1930s built but the cavity walls are narrow. We tried cavity wall insulation but that resulted in terrible damp problems and it had to be removed. We also have suspended wooden floors.
