Do you let your kids swear?

Just read an article about a woman on social media saying that she lets her children swear. According to her, "They know when they can swear, how they can swear and who they can swear around" and now it's got me interested in how many other parents share this view.

Personally, I know my kids may swear outside the house with their friends, but they know they are not allowed to swear at home and when talking to me and DH. I have also never dared to swear in front of my parents. I think I see it as a respect thing.

Yes. In fact as I read them all Chaucer at about the age of 11 I taught them some of their most effective profanities.

God, that’s a really mumsnet answer isn’t it.

Mine are 18 & 21, and I don’t remember us ever having a conversation about whether it was allowed, we just accepted it because they swore in the same way we do.
Telling mil you’ll put the bastard kettle on because she looks dry as a nuns cunt is never going to be appropriate, shouting ‘ah my fucking foot’s because a horse is stood on it is perfectly fine:

Within reason, it doesn’t bother me too much if it’s just us at home and it’s in context. Their dad hates it though! I’d not be happy if they swore in front of any other adult or young child, fortunately they seem to have sussed out a sense of timing / occasion / tone…. mainly. The C word is a no-no though.

16yo swears like a trooper but knows not to in front of grandma! I'm not easily offended but I get a bit bored of gratuitous swearing and will ask him to tone it down sometimes.
Ds13 swears with his friends and on the rugby pitch but rarely at home.
Dh's family are very sweary, mine not so much so.

Mombie2016 - non of what you said is swearing which is what this thread is about.

It shows a bit of a lack of vocabulary in my book. There are better words to use than swear words and I say that as someone who swears!

I never swore in front of my family and I wouldn't expect DS to either. I have young family members who swear like troopers when I'm in their company and it makes me really uncomfortable and I'll admit, I judge.

Obviously as adult or as a teen with peers, do what you like.

Not in front of me but they may do when with their friends, I’ve never sworn in front of my parents either though
