Toddler occasionally walks on tiptoes, normal?

Hi, have posted in Behaviour but posting here for traffic too.

My 14mo has been walking for almost a month, usually flat footed.

However a couple of times over the last week I've noticed she will take a few steps on her tip toes and then go back to walking normally.

I stupidly googled it and Autism came up so now I'm stressing.

Does anyone else toddler do this occasionally?

It sounds normal.

Duplocrocs · 08/10/2022 12:13

My 5 year old still does this! No autism… just a quirk 🤷‍♀️

Chanttotheprince · 08/10/2022 12:13

Normal

She's discovered she can walk in a different way and is trying it. Relax.

CanIBeElectric2 · 08/10/2022 12:18

DD did that too when she was about 18m to 2y. I posted about it on here and got lots of people diagnosing her with autism. I tried to explain that she had no symptoms of autism, but just a weird way of tiptoeing sometimes (with her toes curled under her foot), but you know how MN gets! Anyway, she’s now 6 and a half and definitely not autistic.

BigWoollyJumpers · 08/10/2022 12:21

I do it quite a lot - I am 50...... it's fun! Great for balance and toning up calf muscles. No idea why I do it, just always have 😁(apparently started when I was a baby).

Bumbers · 08/10/2022 12:24

my toddler is 22 months and had done this since she has learnt to walk. She is happy / social etc. It just playing!

BookHermitBlack · 08/10/2022 12:30

My two autistic children never did this. My non autistic child did this on and off for years.
Don't worry about it. Kids do things because they can sometimes not because there's a diagnosis behind it.

Discovereads · 08/10/2022 12:34

Yeah don’t worry, the on tiptoes walking and autism link is only if that is constant and how they prefer to walk and even then, it is only one ‘sign’ as most times the child doesn’t have autism. Autism requires quite a long list of developmental delays and behaviours, and tiptoe walking is so tenuous, it isn’t even one of them. It’s just a quirk that some autistic kids have at a slightly higher rate than NT kids.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 08/10/2022 13:09

Yes, my son did this.

He's now 25 and an Engineer, lol.

JenniferBarkley · 08/10/2022 13:27

Normal at that age as they're figuring out how their bodies work. I did it until I was a teen due to very tight calf muscles - I physically couldn't get my heels on the ground without bending my knees. No autism Smile

GoldenGorilla · 08/10/2022 13:29

It’s normal up till about age 2. If she’s still doing it a lot past age 2 it would be worth checking with your doctor. At this age it’s not anything to worry about though.

Autumntime2022 · 08/10/2022 13:31

eh?

Sorry - eh?

EndlessMagpies · 08/10/2022 13:36

Totally normal. My dd did this a lot, and ended up as a professional ballet dancer.😂

Dontknowwhyidoit · 08/10/2022 13:38

My 22 year old son still walks like this at times and he is not autistic.

Same! No signs of autism other than the tip toeing. Now she’s started walking on heels too. I’d never seen that before with my other DC!

Nursemumma92 · 08/10/2022 14:23

My DD did this around that age for a year or 2 on and off and is now 4, walks totally normally and is neurotypical. Wouldn't worry 😁 x

Autumntime2022 · 08/10/2022 16:22

@TortugaRumCakeQueen you are aware that ‘weird’ autistic people are perfectly capable of being engineers?

Well it's a huge spectrum ,some are some like my child are extremely disabled by their autism.

Rutland2022 · 08/10/2022 16:25

I walk on my tiptoes all the time and did it all the time as a child, it turns out I’ve got a slightly odd knee and foot confirmation (only discovered later in life after injury rehab). DD definitely did this as a baby/toddler-no signs of autism in either of us.
It can be entirely normal.

thisismyusernamee · 08/10/2022 16:27

Yes totally normal, my DD has just turned 3 and still occasionally does it, not as often as she used to though. She isn't autistic, I think Google will tell you a lot of normal toddler traits can be signs of autism.

Is was the fact PP thinks being autistic and being an engineer is mutually exclusive I was trying to point out.
