Got some from the butcher for the kids but now stressing about using the oven because of the £££ Can I do them in the microwave?

I wouldn't. Fry or grill?

Threadkillacilla · 07/10/2022 17:25

Yes but they'll burst and skin will be awful and flabby.

Mumblechum0 · 07/10/2022 17:27

Only if you like grey flabby horrible sausages.

Surely 15 minutes under a hot grill isn't going to be £££?

Fry them?

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 17:29

The use of the word flabby has made me realise the error of my ways! I'm getting out the frying pan!

Do you have an air fryer?

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 17:33

No it's been on my list of "maybe I should" purchased - would you recommend?

Cwcwbird · 07/10/2022 17:37

If you can afford butchers sausages and potentially an air fryer, surely you can afford to cook them properly?

Zippedydoo123 · 07/10/2022 17:38

Sausages cook really well in an air fryer.

tobee · 07/10/2022 17:42

I think they go a bit snappy in the air fryer. Quick and edible though

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 17:43

Thanks for your helpful comment Cwcw. Silly me for worrying about the sky high energy bill. Maybe Scottish power will accept my highly valuable sausages as paper payment

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 17:43

Part payment!

It's worth cooking sausage in bulk(If you can afford to buy them in bulk) and freezing them cooked. They reheat very well in the microwave.

IHateWasps · 07/10/2022 17:51

Once defrosted that is. I wouldn't advise reheating them from frozen. I tend to cook 2 or 3 packs at once.

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 17:55

Great advice thanks @IHateWasps

You can really only cook sausages in the microwave in a microwave grill if you want them to be nice but a microwave grill is about £35 which isn’t very helpful if you’re struggling for money. I would grill them rather than oven cook them as it’s much quicker and should cost less.

I do this too. Far more convenient than freezing entire packs raw. They only take about 1.5 mins for two from frozen, or 2-2.5 mins for 4. (I space them out on a covered plate and use a thermometer probe to make sure they are over 75 degrees to be safe.)

Cwcwbird · 07/10/2022 18:12

I'm just pointing out that perhaps a bit of perspective is needed. If course it's not silly to worry about energy bills but it is silly to pay extra for good sausages and then fuck them up in a microwave because you don't want to spend money on cooking them in an oven.

I also wonder whether if we all start buying the stuff I keep seeing would help us save money on energy bills we won't have saved any money at all.

Anyway, cooking a big batch and freezing is a great idea. I'm banking that one myself.

IHateWasps · 07/10/2022 18:12

Rockadile You're welcome.

hedgehoglurker interesting to know that you can reheat the precooked sausages from frozen too. I'll have to try that.

ChilliBandit · 07/10/2022 18:16

@Cwcwbird is right tbh. It costs about 40p an hour to run an electric oven.

Rockadile · 07/10/2022 18:17

@Cwcwbird fair enough, I actually assumed it would cost a lot more to run the oven

OP posts:
ChilliBandit · 07/10/2022 18:18

Sorry I used my old tariff, it’s about 70p an hour now but still worth it for decent sausages.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2022 18:24

It's possible to steam or microwave them and then finish off in a hot pan. DP does that when meal prepping and they're just as nice - and less likely to be burnt when he's cooking them.

KeepOutingMyselfAnotherNameChange · 07/10/2022 18:34

Sounds vile op.

AriettyHomily · 07/10/2022 18:38

Urgh.

Not directed at you op but in general there needs to be some perspective on this. Unless you're really struggling the oven isn't going to break the bank or the job to cook some sausages.
