Liz Truss is what happens when your party's policies appeal to the maddest, angriest. meanest, least well informed people in society and you let them choose your leader.

countrygirl99 · 16/10/2022 06:02

Labour gain here according to that link. 25k majority currently. That would be great as our previous MP was one forced out by Johnson and I had a lot of respect for him. Current MP is awful.

itsgettingweird · 16/10/2022 06:39

My constituency is Braverman.

She got 63.7% of the vote last time.

The electoral calculator predicts she'll get 39.5% and Labour 37.3% next time.

So still a majority but only by 2.2%.

I can continue hoping that will change!

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 07:03

Talk on sky news of a ' caretaker ' PM now.
They really are a bunch of reprobates .
If they think they could get away with this after 12 weeks of a leadership battle only in August then they must think the British public are complete mugs

I still see your ex MP in my local shop buying his Sunday papers. I saw him a few days after he walked and he was so destroyed by the whole thing. Very sad. The less said about your new fella (who used to be the MP for the 'big Town') the better! could be worse, though, could be Nadine

Unfortunately the Tory party do think the general public are complete mugs and always priorise the well-being of the party over the well-being of the UK as a country.
As PP have said on this thread very accurately, Truss’ only actual mistake was being so open about how hard and fast she wanted to go with what are classic Tory Slash and burn policies.
Hunt in the media today saying they went too far to fast is very much illustrating that truth.
That the Tories are dangerous for normal people.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-63274313

‘Prime Minister Liz Truss and Jeremy Hunt will hold talks at Chequers today as the government tries to salvage its economic credibility.
Mr Hunt, who has replaced Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor, said in a statement that his focus was on growth "underpinned by stability".
He warned of possible tax rises and savings in public spending, saying the mini-budget went "too far, too fast".
But some Conservatives are unhappy amid disquiet over Ms Truss's leadership.
In a series of interviews on Saturday, the prime minister's new right-hand man signalled he would slow down Ms Truss's tax-cutting agenda and reverse some of the pledges made by Mr Kwarteng, who was sacked on Friday.
He said this was necessary to ensure stability on the financial markets.’

so it’s not that this week’s Chancellor thinks anything is morally wrong about massive tax cuts for the extremely rich or that he sees that the trickle down economics has been completely disproved as an effective strategy in trickling down any financial benefit to the super rich.
He just thinks they rushed it a bit. He’s saying that they should have boiled us frogs to death more slowly, basically.

DowningStreetParty · 16/10/2022 07:41

*FROM the super rich, that should say

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 08:02

Sky news keep showing a clip of Ms Truss on Friday looking around for a friend at that presser.
It's just so sad that someone without a clue was voted for by nearly 160,000 people ! What were they all thinking ?

Jason118 · 16/10/2022 08:36

Easy, 'oh, she's white'

Notonthestairs · 16/10/2022 09:18

It's all over for @trussliz

Conservative Home regularly poll members. For months Truss was one of the most popular Ministers. They tipped her as Johnson's successor a long time ago.

And now they've called time on her leadership.

Notonthestairs · 16/10/2022 09:20

80,000+ Conservative members voted for Truss. 60,000 voted for Sunak. She didn't achieve a landslide win. The membership was quite divided. Shame she didn't remember that.

borntobequiet · 16/10/2022 09:22

I never understood why she was so highly thought of. She never did anything sensible or significant and her blatant channeling of Thatcher wouldn’t have fooled a cat (or any other unlikely thing).
I can only think that many or most Conservative party members are terminally thick as well as being very poor judges of character. Lots still like BJ, there was one on Any Answers yesterday blustering on.

Notonthestairs · 16/10/2022 09:35

Yes I was baffled by her popularity.

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 09:37

Sorry 80,000 people voted for her

Notonthestairs · 16/10/2022 10:00

Budget cuts.
Worth reading the extracts attached to Tweet from Henry Yorke.

"These are extracts from a letter HMT was due to send to departments on Monday

My back of envelope maths is cuts at about £8.3bn (with £13bn reallocated)

Note: this is before Hunt arrived - the ask is likely to be bigger now"

twitter.com/harryyorke1/status/1581565640137052160?s=46&t=eF5HiQbQc6MRrq4SmRA2yg

"A 2% cut to schools next year would be £850m. That's equivalent to 17,000 teachers. This is in an environment where schools are already getting a substantial effective cut and looking at redundancies due to inflation."

twitter.com/samfr/status/1581567101235793923?s=46&t=eF5HiQbQc6MRrq4SmRA2yg

They are only getting started...

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 10:07

Just so depressing isn't it?
Yet people will defend it and say it's covid, the war , energy costs.

What the cuts to schools?

Hopefully someone high upon media will point out its further cuts rather than sudden cuts.

Education is already completely underfunded.

But the rich Tory's don't care because they can afford private.

And seem to think if you can't you should just get a better paid job.

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 10:47

I know a few people who think that TAs are a 'waste of time ' , believe me, a few of these upcoming cuts will be applauded by a few people! Or , yes, if you want children be prepared to pay for them to go to school
It's a point of view that is incredibly stupid, but it does exist

I think that's highly likely to be the reason for many Tory members

The sad thing is that those who think cutting TAs is a good move won't have their children's education affected because they are in the private sector education.

But cutting TAs at a time more and more children with send are going to MS will create a bigger disaster than we already have Sad

Latest from The Telegraph

Crispin Blunt became the first Tory MP to demand Liz Truss's resignation - and said the Prime Minister should quit "now".

Mr Blunt, the MP for Reigate for the past 25 years who will stand aside at the next general election, demanded Ms Truss leave office and be replaced by a "combination" of Jeremy Hunt, Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt.

Asked if her six-week premiership could survive, he will tell Channel 4's Andrew Neil Show: "No, I think the game's up and it's now a question as to how the succession is managed."

It came as Mr Hunt, the new Chancellor, insisted the Prime Minister was "still in charge" of the country and economic policy, while refusing to rule out further U-turns on tax cuts.

Mr Hunt was last night preparing to delay a 1p cut to income tax and Tory MPs expressed concerns that he was effectively running Downing Street.

the80sweregreat · 16/10/2022 16:21

Hunt is the man in charge then?
No wonder he looked like the cat with the cream
Laura K gave him an easy time of it today
The Labour spokesman had an absolute grilling !
I really don't like her at all !
