That Week in Tory is epic. Deeply depressing.

Next week's will be better.

This is what it looks like when you’ve run out of road.

The guardian now
Truss is hanging by a thread
That much eh?

Notonthestairs · 14/10/2022 20:55

The changes are cosmetic.
She's running the same policies. And when she's gone someone else will step in to carry that banner even if it's from the sidelines.
The party will continue to be divided. Braverman desperate to get out in front of Badenoch and throwing out ever more populist gibberish. IEA/Taxpayers Alliance working out which horse to push forward now. One Nation Tories (what's left of them) scrabbling to get purchase. Part of the public thinking Johnson went because of effing cake.

In the background - which should be the foreground - NHS alerts going off, Coffrey telling nurses to shut up, teachers leaving the profession, mortgage rates stabilising but from unnecessary rises (like that's a win) etc etc.

Collapsing around us but still in Government. Infuriating. We deserve better.

Notonthestairs · 14/10/2022 21:46

"We do not expect financial concerns to abate as a result of today’s action,” Citigroup said in a note as it criticised the government for not making a broader change to policy.

“Instead, we believe further market instability likely lies ahead.”

Also, let us not forget that it was Jeremy Hunt's expert stewardship of the NHS from 2012 - 2018 that saw us completely unprepared, with no Pandemic Plan and no PPE, when Covid hit.

AdamRyan · 14/10/2022 22:31

😂

Another MP called Ms Truss's news conference "a mega-disaster". They said: "She will have to resign - she is worse than Corbyn."

Where is janiie?

I have not forgotten Janiie sneering at me about something I said about Truss and calling her "a strong capable woman".
Well.... who's right now? I called her a wobbly wibbly blancmange WEEKS ago on Twitter and got a lot of likes!

Janiie sneering, how out of character.

"Coffey said govt is determined to prove ‘flipping OBR’ wrong"

^^ taken from The Times. Link below.

This line sums up everything that is wrong with them.

They shouldn't need to prove the OBR wrong. In fact that should cross their minds.

The OBR forecast isn't the enemy.

The forecast is a tool. It should function - indeed ordinarily it does - to bolster a Governments decision making and budget. It's confirmation of their skill.

Instead it's framed as a barrier stopping them doing what they like without facing the consequences.

It seems to sum up Truss total attitude.

"I'll prove you all wrong".

borntobequiet · 15/10/2022 08:23

I just heard Hunt on the radio saying the words “make a terrific success of Brexit” and felt despair.

Notonthestairs · 15/10/2022 08:47

Aside from the markets and Truss resignation watch (what is the point of her now?) this is where we should be watching - 40 million savings to be found from somewhere...

"All government departments are going to have to find more efficiencies than they were planning to," says Jeremy Hunt, just days after Liz Truss promised MPs she would "absolutely" not make any spending cuts."

twitter.com/adambienkov/status/1581170740962861056?s=46&t=MpfuuHHZ8O9c-FjqTGN7qw

Hunt was asked if the NHS would be protected and dodged the question.

Notonthestairs · 15/10/2022 08:48

Apologies 40 billion!

DuncinToffee · 15/10/2022 09:04

Thanks Notonthestairs, I just saw him confirming tax rises and public spending cuts. Austerity 2 is coming.

We could all do with more Miriam Margolyes

“When I saw him there I just said ‘you’ve got a helluva job, the best of luck’. What I really wanted to say was ‘fuck you, you bastard’, but you can’t say that”.

I want to hear, specifically and repeatedly, how much this last four weeks has added to our overall debt. People are still bringing up Brown’s gold sell off, this shouldn’t be allowed to die.

And Rishis failure to insure our debt costing 11billion.

The tories are too expensive to have in power.

DuncinToffee · 15/10/2022 09:47

Yes indeed, how much has this mistake mini budget cost us?

OP posts:
mibbelucieachwell · 15/10/2022 10:06

Yes. And how much for the lack for preparation for the pandemic, resulting in an expensive scramble for medical supplies and a needlessly expensive furlough scheme abused by so many. Probably a longer lockdown than if they'd locked down earlier too.
