It's not even 10 o'clock yet

NEW: UK economy shrank unexpectedly in August, falling by 0.3% after growing 0.1% in July, and raising risk of recession, according to ONS figures.

EXCL: The India trade deal is on the "verge of collapse" after Indian ministers reacted furiously to Suella Braverman criticising migrants from their country:

Jacob Rees-Mogg accuses the BBC of breaching impartiality guidelines by suggesting the current crisis on UK financial markets has anything to do with the Government.

Dear Jacob was on fine form on the radio this morning. Every other word was growth, which unicorns in sunny uplands survive on, and which the government is responsible for and the IMF which hate the current UK government say that the UK growth is going to be wonderful, except that because they hate the UK government their report mostly rubbish, except for one part that suggested the UK might have a bit of growth. But the government is definitely not responsible for the crashing pound or the Bank of England, that is the fault of the Federal reserve. (no genuinely he said that twice).

I've just gone on my break and caught PMqs briefly. She needs to be certified.

All she has is the energy price freeze. She is not answering any of the questions. It's like watching a sixth former debating very poorly.

ClaudineClare · 12/10/2022 12:18

Penny Mordaunt looks very pissed off.

ClaudineClare · 12/10/2022 12:19

On to sewage now. Seems apt.

Notonthestairs · 12/10/2022 12:32

So there is going to be a campaign to suggest ways people & businesses can reduce energy consumption after all? I thought that was terrible nanny state stuff?

mibbelucieachwell · 12/10/2022 12:38

Late to the party.

I see she's saved us from "gargantuan" energy bills. Not if you live in one of the colder areas of UK, or have medical requirements for a warmer home or electrical medical equipment.

Not to mention the help with energy bills being cancelled out by huge hikes in mortgage payments.

mibbelucieachwell · 12/10/2022 12:40

Ooh she's "absolutely" going to stick to her pledge to no public spending cuts. Lol. What a gift to the opposition.

I think we can safely assume now that whatever she says, she’ll end up doing the opposite. Weak, weak, weak - thank Christ.

borntobequiet · 12/10/2022 13:09

I think Truss has been binge watching Thatcher videos. She’s sounding more and more like her. It’s quite creepy.

Chair of Treasury committee and Tory MP Mel Stride predicts more U-turns

"Given the huge challenges, many, myself included, believe it is quite possible [the Chancellor] will simply have to come forward with a further rowing back of on the tax annoucements he made" in Sep

So no public spending cuts, energy cap intervention thingy, and tax cuts? All at the same time and paid for ... how? No wonder the economy is in free fall. Even I can see that this is nuts.

DuncinToffee · 12/10/2022 13:45

Hmmm

Liz Truss' spokesman rows back from her "absolute" commitment at today’s #pmqs not to make public spending cuts.

Says overall government spending will rise (largely because of energy bill subsidies) but says "clearly there will be difficult decisions that need to be taken."

twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1580167801129832450?t=dpJRqv6MKTg7c5H5I3r1LQ&s=19

and more

Look. Surely when Truss says she isn't cutting public sector spending, what she means is that while vast cuts are indeed coming, the cost of the energy bailout means they'll still be spending more than before?

So there will be cuts but Government spending will be at the rate forecast in March budget because of energy help?

Well that makes more sense even if it's not what I want to read.

The trouble for her with this approach is that the voters will see the cuts that have been and will be made to services that they rely on and vote accordingly.
Even if it is true that public spending hasn't been cut, much like immigrants contributing more than they take out, if that is not people's lived experience the overall headlines are meaningless.

Interesting article in the Guardian about Truss blocking solar farms;

www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/12/truss-plan-to-block-solar-farms-is-deeply-unpopular-so-why-is-she-so-keen

DuncinToffee · 12/10/2022 14:37

At least she u-turned on a proposed u-turn and has confirmed her Government will continue with the 2019 manifesto commitment to end no-fault evictions.

Mood is awful. Despite nonsense from Truss et al, there's growing realisation full fiscal U-turn is needed. Many Tory MPs want to make @KwasiKwarteng scapegoat in hope it lets @trussliz reset. Others think only way to win back markets & prevent Starmer landslide is her head 1/

I was wondering whether Johnson was in the chamber today -

"Parliament is back sitting after three weeks. BJ therefore has gone on Holiday for two weeks to the Caribbean. He will never change."

Haven't read yet.

But on way to work I listened to JRM on bbc radio 4.

Sounded to me like he was blaming the banks not the government?

Plus his smug voice gives me the rage!

Big fat LOL. He’s utterly deluded. Who gives a shite if the BBC have breached guidelines - check out global media saying the exact same thing.

how anyone can take that man seriously is an utter mystery.

Yes this was what I listened too!

Smuggy mc smug face trying to blame bbc for not being impartial. He is obviously one of the ones wanting to scrap it.

This government think impartial means on their side.

Downnotdown · 12/10/2022 16:41

As each day goes by I'm getting more and more convinced that the only reason Truss wanted to be PM was to ensure that Boris wouldn't be seen as the worst leader the UK have ever had 😟

Notonthestairs · 12/10/2022 17:00

So when Chris Philp told MPs: "We do not plan real-term cuts", turns out he was actually referring to the Govt's GDP deflator measure of inflation 3.7%, not CPI measure of inflation of around 10%.
