Is Liz Truss going to scrap free childcare?!

This story is worrying:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/06/revealed-rightwing-slash-and-burn-ideas-that-could-be-blueprint-for-truss?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I have no idea how we'd cope as a family if this happened, coupled with everything else that's going on at the moment with the cost of living.

I hope to god other MPs speak up about this so it can be stopped. Is it worth writing to local MPs to ask for assurances?

Lis Truss didnt shine as a childcare minister
David Cameron had to put her back in her box

Oh my. I hadn't seen that. My toddler's sense of purpose centres around pretending to be a T rex most of the time so I don't think we'd be looked on favourably.

She wants to shrink the state so it wouldn’t surprise me if this was on the agenda. She’ll try and go for employment rights too I expect. I don’t think she’ll be able to achieve any of it because even quite right wing Tory’s can’t stomach it.

It would never be agreed to by the rest of the party. They know how much confidence has fallen since she took the job, and they know they are likely to be on the way out. This would be thr nail in th3 coffin for Conservatives and i think they will get her out before then

lannistunut · 06/10/2022 20:53

I mean, who know? Absolutely anything is possible. It is terrifying that she now has to find billions of spending cuts to pay for her stupid tax cuts, on top of the inflation costs, on top of the increased borrowing costs.

justwondering123456 · 06/10/2022 21:32

This is so scary

Frazzled2207 · 06/10/2022 21:34

she might want to but she won’t have the support for this. It would mean less parents working and paying tax for starters!

I honestly wouldn’t worry too much.

MiddleParking · 06/10/2022 21:36

My toes are curling in embarrassment for her reading that list of ideas. She’s made such a cunt of herself in the first five minutes that she’s now having to do Katie-Hopkins-as-PM roleplay to pretend she meant to do that all along.

The approach to childcareis currently encouraging a child led approach. So will be encouraging your little t rex to continue.

As a c/ minder I had a mum knoock on the door. Looked for her Dc- he was crawling down the path as he was a dog.

If you can't crawl and stomp around at 3 when can you x

miceonabranch · 06/10/2022 22:18

Can it possibly get any worse? 🤦‍♀️

LesOliviers · 06/10/2022 23:01

Cutting free childcare hours would financially finish my family off!

PrinnyPree · 07/10/2022 20:35

I was just about to start a thread after seeing the Guardian article today. Absolutely shitting myself, I have a 2.5 year old, that's £9k I was hoping to save next year, he's currently in 2 days a week so I can work part time and it's barely worth it spending 6k a year atm I was dying for the free hours next year so I can increase my hours at work too. 😭

(Yes yes I know childcare is a shared expense but people have to sometimes make financial decisions whether it's fiscally sensible for the lowest earner to work if childcare costs so much)

With the increase in bills my heart is in my throat, she's going to completely fuck my familes plans. I think it's definitely made me rule out having a second child, finances are just so fucking precarious right now, we've never been loaded but were ticking along quite comfortably living within our means, now got the same sicky feeling like I'm back in 2009 in my 20s when I was made redundant during the financial crash.

PrincessButtercupToo · 07/10/2022 20:36

It’s not “free” of course, it’s paid for by other people, mainly the highest earners.

Doggosforever · 07/10/2022 20:38

Won’t happen

she won’t be around for long enough to achieve anything

and backbenchers wouldn’t stand for it - the blow back from constituents would be unbearable

i mean conservative mps are openly saying she’s an idiot. She is not going to last for long

MaverickSnoopy · 07/10/2022 20:46

I used to work in the childcare sector. She came along with these ideas in 2013 (I think it was) and she was shot down. The Early Years Alliance is in uproar as is the childcare sector about her proposed changes (Inc scrapping ratios). The sector will crumble if she gets her way.

PrinnyPree · 07/10/2022 20:47

Jfc I know it's not FREE! It's paid for by me and all the bloody tax I'VE also been paying for the last 20 odd years too. Not just the rich parasites who oppress middle and working class wages to give themselves fat bonuses and then whinge about higher rate tax.

Only if you’re on more than about £40,000.

If you are on less than this then you’re unlikely to be a net contributor.

I’d be very happy to see the childcare subsidy reduced if it let the top rate of tax be lowered.

MarshaBradyo · 07/10/2022 20:51

The only thing I’ve heard is ratios changing?

There are a few of these articles where suggestions are floated and people react but I haven’t heard much more

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 07/10/2022 20:51

Wouldn't surprise me, then it wouldn't surprise me if she decided to implement a weigh in system where fat benefit claimants get less money to incentivise buying less food. The woman's only interested in making more money for herself and her rich mates.

Believeitornot · 07/10/2022 20:53

Liz Truss ultimately wants to get rid of the state. It sounds extreme - but that’s what she believes. It won’t happen because her beliefs are rooted in ideology - almost like a religion.

Countries that have tried her style of free market economics haven’t exactly excelled unless you’re stinking rich. Chile is a good example - a high growth economy but the levels of inequality are the highest in the OECD and Pinochet - who implemented the policies - had to do shit like throwing dissenters out of helicopters (yes, his regime did). Thatcher saw Pinochet as an economic ally….

Describing someone as “net contributor” is so callous.

Sometimes we will be a contributor. Sometimes not. Is that all we value?

But what happens if someone with the same ideas, just a bit more nous comes along?

The Tories need to root out their right wing nut cases.

It’s the only thing that counts when someone’s making the factual claim that their taxes have already paid for the subsidized child care.

but what if they bought a load and paid taxes via VAT?
