If you found £15 in the street

Would you hand it in at the police station as you are supposed to?

Because I found £15 this morning, no one around and it was in the process of being blown onto the road. Obviously, I still have it but a quick Google tells me that it's considered theft. So, would you hand it in or not?

I have. I handed it in.

It was a really odd week.

First I found three £10s wrapped together on the road outside out house.
Then I found £5 when I got off the bus in town.
Then I found a £20 and two £10s in the shopping centre.

Handed them all in to appropriate places, but didn't tell anyone. I've never found any notes before or after that week.

The next week someone put £100 in notes through my door with a note saying "treat yourself".

If it's got the queen's face on it it's mine, thanks for finding it for me OP 😏🤣

But no, I'd just keep it.

If I found a wallet with money and cards and ID in it I'd give it to the police station, but loose cash flying about in the wind, nah. Finders keepers on that one!

That's not really the point at all. I doubt whether a police station would even accept a banknote found floating on the breeze!

Did you understand the post?

The discussion is about the moral dilemma: if you find some money, do you keep it or attempt to reunite it with the owner?

The difficulty of the finder ‘proving’ who it belongs to doesn’t come into that choice. I pointed out that saying ‘there’s no way of proving who the money belongs to’ doesn’t entitle you to just keep it, and nor is it an excuse for keeping money that somebody else dropped.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 06/10/2022 22:54

Unless I’ve seen it drop out of someone’s pocket or bag in which case I’d return it to owner, otherwise I’d keep it... finders keepers and all... who goes to the police station to report £15?

Not specifically picking on you, but I’m surprised by the number of comments making the same argument about “you can’t prove who owns the money”.

Almost as if the people saying “you can’t prove who it belongs to” know that keeping money that you find in the street isn’t entirely honest, and worry about somehow getting into trouble for doing so. Their defence would be, “but you can’t PROVE who it really belongs to, can ya?”.

It isn't entirely honest, no. But then is anyone in the world 100% honest all of the time?

I wouldn't feel guilty at keeping loose money that I found on the street. If you would, fair enough.

My auntie was twelve in the 1930s, and she found a ten shilling note on the pavement. She ran to the shops and bought a pack of sausages, a pack of bacon, and a bonnet for her baby sister (my mum!) It became a family story we never forgot years later.

People going on about wallets and finding money in a shop are missing the point.
If you found a wallet of course you give it back.
Same if you found money in a supermarket, bank.
Money outside with no one looking for it,is fair game.
I'd keep it.

local FB page.

’Has anyone lost any money? PM me where you think you lost it and how much’

A genuine person will tell you the correct amount and general location (as in the roads they have walked along).

Also, look out for FB posts… ‘Has anyone found £15 in X area?’

Tell you want, there are some proper liers on this thread man Grin

Thatsthatthen87 · 07/10/2022 17:03

I didn't want to say because it makes me sound like an arsehole but it was very near a 'halfway house' so I'm kind of assuming it's drug money but I was not knocking on that door to check.

Not a bad idea, I don't have fb though.
