If you found £15 in the street

Would you hand it in at the police station as you are supposed to?

Because I found £15 this morning, no one around and it was in the process of being blown onto the road. Obviously, I still have it but a quick Google tells me that it's considered theft. So, would you hand it in or not?

Maybe someone was watching to see how many people would pick it up, as part of a psychology experiment!

A similar thing happened to me and a friend some years ago on a trip to a nearby town. We found a £10 note in a side doorway of a jewellers. We didn’t like to just take it, so lodged it in the window frame at the side so that it wasn’t immediately obvious, but anyone looking for it would be able to see it. We decided we’d come back in half an hour and if it was still there we would take it. On our return, it was still there, so we treated ourselves to tea with a (relatively) clear conscience!

ParkheadParadise · 06/10/2022 14:50

No I wouldn't

Soubriquet · 06/10/2022 14:51

Yup I would keep it.

I found £20 on the floor when I was a kid. Was chuffed to bits!

ObviouslyHeGetsFed · 06/10/2022 15:01

No. Anything over £50 I would take to the police station

EtiquetteQuestion · 06/10/2022 15:02

I saw £30 (three tenners) on the pavement a few weeks ago. I picked them up and looked around - I was near a parked car that someone was sitting in with the window wound down. I said to them "I'm probably being far too honest, but have you just dropped some money?" She looked panicked for a moment and said "yeah, I've just been paid cash for a job" so I handed the notes over. I'm pretty sure she was being honest, given her reaction and I'd hope that someone would return the favour one day.

Stressybetty · 06/10/2022 15:03

The chances of the police finding the right owner or the owner going to the police station are pretty remote unless it's a lot of money. Maybe someone would go back to where they think they lost it to look. If there was no one around looking I would keep a small amount myself. A bigger amount I would take to the police. I found a debit card in our local cemetery recently, walked round all the people there as it was quite busy, then took it to the police station. Was told all they do and all the bank would have done is shred it. I did post on local nextdoor site giving no details but no-one commented

GlassDeli · 06/10/2022 15:03

Yes I'd take £15 to the police station. It isn't a 'small amount'.

CheezePleeze · 06/10/2022 15:04

I'd put a vague message in the local FB group

If no-one came forward after a week, I'd keep it and yes I know not everyone's on FB but I live miles from my local police station (that's if it's still open).

Hitatiks · 06/10/2022 15:06

Police round where I am are not interested in anything with a value less than £400.

BadNomad · 06/10/2022 15:09

Take it to the local police station. Give your details. If it isn't claimed within 6 weeks, you get to go claim it.

DialsMavis · 06/10/2022 15:09

£15 I would post on a fb group then keep. I found a fairly big wad of notes in the queue at Legoland, not sure exactly how much (definitely over £100, quite a few £20 notes). I asked the man in front if it was his and he said "errrr yeah" and took it. I am sure he was lying. I still feel bad for whoever really lost it.

ChagSameachDoreen · 06/10/2022 15:10

Keep it.

Always keep money you find.

saveforthat · 06/10/2022 15:10

Why would people hand in £150 but not £15? The former could be from a drug dealer and the latter pocket money saved by a child. You either think it's stealing or not. I am a bit superstitious so I think something bad will happen to me if I take advantage of someone else's misfortune. If I was worried about identifying the rightful owner, I would donate it to charity.

maddy68 · 06/10/2022 15:10

Not £15. But a larger amount i would call the police and tell them I had found it on case anyone reports

SoUpset1984 · 06/10/2022 15:10

I'd keep it.
I found wallets and bankcards and I handed them in.
For £15 how could you prove who owned it.

Thurst · 06/10/2022 15:12

I’m pretty sure the police would not be happy at being taken away from their other duties to do paperwork for £15. They don’t even come out for some burglaries these days. If it’s just cash and not identifiable in anyway just keep it or if that makes you uncomfortable give it to a charity.

Lazydaisydaydream · 06/10/2022 15:13

I recently found £20 as I was walking out of an event. There were lots of teenagers there, so I handed the money in at the front desk so that if someone realised they’d lost it and went to ask it would be there ready.

if I’d just been walking down the street and it wouldn’t be obviously who it belonged to or where to hand it in etc then I would probably just have kept it.

SirenSays · 06/10/2022 15:13

I wouldn't give such a small amount to police, I doubt they'd ever find the person. But if I find something I tend to hang around, quite often they'll come back looking for it. I've managed to give a few things back this way.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 06/10/2022 15:13

I would spend it and think what a great day this was 😆

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/10/2022 15:14

There isn't lost and found now apparently, there will be someone at the station to suggest posting on local SM sites/ FB. I imagine if you found a huge sum of money they'd be interested but last time I looked up about it after finding a diamond ring they'd stopped it.

Tbh, had someone been around I would have asked them. And if someone asked me if I'd lost cash and I hadn't, I would be honest about it. I haven't handed this cash into the police station though so I'm certainly not claiming to be a saint.

I'd try to do the right thing, then if that was not possible. Reconsider the options

bathbombaholic · 06/10/2022 15:25

There's no point handing it into police- cash isn't identifiable so it won't go back to the owner. May as well keep it

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/10/2022 15:25

It would cost me nearly that much to get to the nearest police station that's likely to be open.

greenacrylicpaint · 06/10/2022 15:26

I would donate it to the foodbank
