What age child wrote this?

Hello, my dd started writing a book. What age do you think wrote this?
----
A skinny grey and black shape was sitting on the rough soil. ‘’There. That’s the last one,’’ He said, as he planted the last tree in. “Hey, Lucifer.’’ said a familiar voice. It was Summer. He liked Summer. Her voice was as smooth as a rose in the afternoon sunshine. Summer had ginger fur, vivid green eyes, and a long, stretched out tail. Ah, he missed her. “Whatcha doin’?’’ she pondered. ‘’The groups waiting,’’ Summer drawled out, tilting her head to the side in a sassy way as Lucifer stood up. His tail ached. Why did his tail ache? ‘’Yeah, yeah. Comin,’’ He walked with Summer through a pathway, mostly hidden by the trees. The hard stone strewn across the ground was marble white. They went all the way to the mysterious structure in a clearing of the lush forest.

The building was a hazelnut brown and cerulean blue and the wooden roof was a rusty brown. It was quite homey, flower pots with various small plants taking up the space on the windowsills in front of the light grey tinted windows, blinds drawn, blocking the view of the inside building. Hazelnut wood accompanied by various highlights of blue was the main feature of the structure, a few white poles holding up the roof over the doors and windows on the top row of the vertical glass surfaces peaking into the building, allowing light to flood through.

Both Lucifer and Summer noticed a figure, slightly larger than them and with rougher fur, sitting outside of the building.
“Hey, Maggie… and who’s that?" Lucifer questioned, giving a fleeting glance at the waiting cats. “Oh, just a visitor,” She looked strangely guilty, but for what reason? Maggie was honourable, she had her fair share of knowledge. Maybe he could ask her. “Maggie, tell me now. Who is it?’
“Um, ok. I know this sounds weird, but, um…’’ She stammered.

“That's my father.’’
“Your FATHER?!’’ Lucifer reared back. ‘’Why and how is he here? Shouldn't he be in the kingdom of Khid?’’

Interested to know what others think of this writing, thanks!

I would guess that it was written by a a bright year 5 or 6 child- one who has read a lot of books and enjoys reading and writing.

I don't think it would be a teenager due to the incorrect use of capital letters and commas which they should have mastered better by the time they are year 8 or 9 and the immature choice of talking animals points towards a younger child.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 03/10/2022 16:59

Later Y4 into Y5 with a flare/interest in writing.

Yack02 · 03/10/2022 17:00

My son is reasonably bright and in year 3, there is no way he could write like this. I know several other bright children of this age and the year above, again I highly doubt any could write like this.

I would be utterly amazed if you said it had come from a child aged 7 or 8.

A very bright 9 year old perhaps? But more like 10-12?

skgnome · 03/10/2022 17:02

I would say a 8-10 year old with interest in writing, who listen to the teachers saying “use interesting words / big writing”
there’s a ton of description - but also a lot of things pointing to a young writer
can also be a young teen

minniemooblue · 03/10/2022 17:05

@WaddleAway
I thought Warrior cats too!

Obslb · 03/10/2022 17:05

@oobedobe tell us!

Obslb · 03/10/2022 17:05

The grammar is v good so I would say 13.

happy66 · 03/10/2022 17:10

Your child is a genius.
You do not need mums net to confirm.

oobedobe · 03/10/2022 17:11

Thank you to those who took a guess!

The correct answer is 9.

The reason I asked is because before I read this (which she did on google docs) the only work my DD was producing was very basic more at the level of a 6/7 year old, barely a few sentences. Then suddenly I read this and was impressed.

Yes she loves to read, mainly Wings of Fire, not read warrior cats yet.

I hate these threads. You have a child genius/you should get your child some help. Pick whichever you were hoping for.

LOL! This!

I would say 10. But my sister is good at writing and prob would have written like this at 7, but she's no genius now as an adult, just a good writer lol

Tedhop · 03/10/2022 17:15

@oobedobe that writing is incredible for 9. I loved writing as a child and I love reading stuff like this… many adults couldn’t write like that. She writes as though she’s really enjoying it too.

Chanel05 · 03/10/2022 17:18

I'd have said a very high level year 4 child or a year 5 child.

If you've copied word for word then the speech throughout isn't punctuated with accuracy, which is a minor area for development. 99% of the way there though!

You'll get people on here saying their 4 year old could do it, but this is very good for 9 (speaking as someone with some professional knowledge in this area).

Is the punctuation copied directly, or did you add some in when you typed it up?

Either way, the concepts are good and words like cerulean, accompanied, fleeting shows a very good vocabulary for a 9 year old if they didn't have help.

Now my recommendation is you sign off mumsnet and go nurture that creative young mind 😉

CheezePleeze · 03/10/2022 17:19

Fantastic writing for a 9 year old.

My DS1 hated writing. He'd start out really well with a great plot and lots of adjectives then he'd get bored after two paragraphs and write "And then they all died. The end". 😂😂

oobedobe · 03/10/2022 17:29

Thank you for the kind comments and feedback. Yes I cut and paste it, no editing, she writes on her own, though she does use spell check!

She is never been the most fluent speaker (speech delay) and possibly has auditory processing disorder. So that is another reason I was surprised at how elaborate her writing was.

She's at school now (not UK) but will definitely nurture when she is home!

I agree. Although the tail boner (?) would make me think early teenager?

Tail boner!? Bloody hell

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 03/10/2022 17:33

I'd have said 10 / 11 but can see that she's 9......that's fantastic, her love of reading is obviously benefiting her massively. I love a.proud mum moment, always feel like a.bigger deal when you know they've struggled previously

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/10/2022 17:37

I’d say 11 or 12 but could be older but I also think it’s quite well written, I know my own 11 year old wouldn’t be as descriptive or use some of the words as she doesn’t know them yet.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 03/10/2022 17:38

Nevermind I didn’t rtr, very impressive for a 9 year old! She is very creative!

TwoWrightFeet · 03/10/2022 17:39

6 or 7

Lopilo · 03/10/2022 17:41

I think you can right click to get synonyms on Google docs. Maybe where some of the words are coming from. It’s a good way to expand vocab.

CheezePleeze · 03/10/2022 17:44

TwoWrightFeet · 03/10/2022 17:39

6 or 7

😂😂😂

MysteriousMonkey · 03/10/2022 17:51

I genui Ely don't know, and I have many children of different ages... I'd agree with others and give a range. My guess is from 9 to 13 somewhere, the descriptive language is lovely but reminds me of the work bought home by my primary aged children when they were being encouraged to be really descriptive.

That said if this child enjoys writing it's definitely something they should be encouraged to carry on with, its good!

Yack02 · 03/10/2022 18:13

Oh behave.

Yes this is very impressive for a 9 yr old.
