Is it normal for a toddler not to cry or call out when they wake?

My DD is almost 14mo. I have no idea what time she wakes in the morning because when I wake (any time between 6 and 7) and check the monitor she is often already awake but just sat in her cot looking around or stood at the bars quite happily.

I mentioned this to a colleague who said oh how strange, both of mine cry or call out for us when they wake up. So now I'm a bit paranoid that something is amiss with her communication perhaps?

I've posted recently because she doesnt use mama as a word discrimatley yet (although she does say it) but she does have a few words - banana, dog, bye, ball to name some.

So I'm turning to mumsnet again to ask if anyone elses little ones have been like this??

That’s normal. Some kids are just happy and chilled when they wake. So that in itself doesn’t mean anything.

Blocked · 03/10/2022 10:55

Sounds like a very content baby to me!

ReeseWitherfork · 03/10/2022 10:57

Tbh I think it’s worth remembering that even a 14 minute old baby has a way of communicating with its mum that it needs something. I feel confident if your little girl needed you she’d be hollering. She may not be a morning person and quite likes the quiet 😉

DS used to babble a bit, that’s all I recall. He was 18 months when we moved him to a bed and he used to quietly come and climb in with us first thing and then slowly wake up properly.

normal not to cry if they have things to play with in their cot but it happens, your baby is content by the sound of things

whatshouldIdo2022 · 03/10/2022 10:57

My friend's baby was like this, I always just thought how lucky she was! My DD was an awful sleeper and woke up for the day screaming and crying, but as she's got older and started sleeping through she just chats away in her cot occasionally saying mama or dada. I wouldn't worry about it.

mynameiscalypso · 03/10/2022 10:57

My DS has always been the same. He's now 3 and this morning we had the alphabet for about an hour before he wanted to get up. If you go in too early, he tells you to go away and that he wants to stay in bed. He's also capable now of getting out of bed to find us when he wakes up but is too lazy. I'd enjoy it!

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/10/2022 11:00

DS1 was like this. He liked to look at his hands and the room for a bit before wanting to get up.

Perfectly normal @TheSmallestOneWasMadeline .😊

Chichz · 03/10/2022 11:00

My 2 year old does this if he wakes up in a good mood! 😊 I would also say enjoy it. We definitely do now, though at your LO's age I probably still worried too much about naps etc and couldn't quite handle not knowing when he'd woken up, hehe. Things get simpler!

Also, her speech sounds fine to me? X

theaardaphantcometh · 03/10/2022 11:03

Mine was like this too, and is absolutely fine at 5. Some are just happy in their own company for a bit that's all.

stormelf · 03/10/2022 11:04

It all depends on the child, each child is so different. My oldest was exactly the same, she would be happy chatting in her cot of crawling around it, talking to pictures on the wall. My middle child would scream the moment he woke up. My youngest at 9 months us quite happy to chat to herself in the mirror near her cot

Beetr00t · 03/10/2022 11:32

Mine never did either! He'd just lay there til I woke up, I set an alarm and went in and most mornings he was already awake, as he got a little bigger he learned to shout out 'hello!'

Sahgah · 03/10/2022 11:35

My 3rd was like this. Was happy playing in her cot or was often still asleep when I got up. She is now 5 and loves her bed and I have to drag her out of bed for school every morning. My eldest is always up at the crack of dawn and when young always called out to get out of bed as soon as awake. Just a chilled out toddler.

Needmorelego · 03/10/2022 11:43

Wait until she can get out of the cot and does that creepy thing where she will just stand silently next to your bed staring at you until you wake up 😂

Hahaha. Yes, when you prise open your eyes and boom! Toddler at the end of your nose Grin

ifonly4 · 03/10/2022 12:07

DD was quiet in the morning and always seemed happy. We'd sometimes catch her holding on the rails of cot and bouncing up and down or throwing her cuddly toys around.

She's now 21 and happy, outgoing and lives life to the full.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/10/2022 12:17

2 of mine were like this, much nicer start to the day than my other dc who cried.

Northernsoullover · 03/10/2022 12:23

My second baby was happy as Larry from the day he was born. He rarely cried unless poorly. So woke up happy and went to sleep happy. My first was a miserable shit though 😂

JJsdadisatwat · 03/10/2022 12:24

Oh that’s lovely! She sounds chilled.

My youngest screams blue murder as soon as she wakes, always has done. She’s 2 now and wakes up shouting in my face and sometimes crying “where’s daddy?” “where’s sisters name” really upset.

We co sleep so it’s never a relaxing start to the day 😳

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 03/10/2022 12:25

DC1: would let the whole street know she was awake by howling the second she was even thinking about waking up. Also a nightmare sleeper.
DC2: Would walk into his room to find him happily playing with his teddies, or he'd silently appear in our bed sometimes. Amazing sleeper.

Depends on child IMO.

JJsdadisatwat · 03/10/2022 12:25

(Although if dh or my other daughter happen to be in the bed when she wakes up, she screams at them to “mooooooooove” so I can’t win either way).

cardeyscat · 03/10/2022 12:30

My eldest was like this. Then she went through a phase of singing nursery rhymes until I came in to see her. She's still happy in her own company. It was a really sweet way to be woken up. I miss those days. When my youngest came along she had to get my attention straight away and still does 🤣 bit of a shock to the system!!

softplayfail · 03/10/2022 12:31

My little girl does this now at 2 and has done since she was about 5 months old. Sounds like your little one is very content to wait
Mine occasionally sings to herself or to her toys when waiting for me to collect her

Cantthinkofanewnameatm · 03/10/2022 12:31

DD1 - would lie or stand, looking around her, maybe have a soft toy or a book in her cot and look at that.
DD2 - a cryer. And I knew by the type of cry if we were in for a horrendous, I’m going to grizzle non stop day or a just a cry now the day could get better sort of day.
Don’t worry, just be glad you don’t have a grizzler— it was almost 5 years of hell. ( She improved dramatically once at school and was a pleasant teenager and is a great adult but those first 5 years nearly broke me)

TheSmallestOneWasMadeline · 03/10/2022 14:25

Thank you everyone! Glad to know it isnt unusual.

Oh my god yes my son did this. It took me a long time after he stopped doing it to get past the fear 😂
