If you are an average household with an average household income how much would you happily pay for a week or two in the sun in the summer?

Just that really.

£500 a week for two people (no kids) maximum if abroad for flights and accomodation. Then I'd expect to be paying for food and drinks on top of that.
We have above average income (£84k household) but we just don't do expensive holidays. We much prefer to be able to have more trips than go for more expensive hotels/resorts.
We happily stay in hostels, spare room airbnbs, etc, to keep costs down.

My DD is 28 , she’s a SAHM …,her partner has a joinery business….she has x 2 DD 3 and 6….she spent £2400 on a 9 night all inclusive in summer to Ibiza….and £1200 on a self catering 7 nights to Portugal in 0ctober….. she has a log burner but will use her heating when needed

cakeorwine · 02/10/2022 19:38

Me and DS. £30 k income.

Just spent about £1500 on a long European driving holiday. We camped and used apartments. Most expensive bit was fuel. And road tolls. Looking at you, Italy and France. We tend to self cater a lot

MacaroniBaloney · 02/10/2022 19:39

Pre covid I would pay 750 per person for a week AI.

I've not tried to book since so no idea if that's still achievable.

leccybill · 02/10/2022 19:42

We try to get it under £3k for 10 nights in 4*+ hotel. This year, Tenerife was £2.6k.
Me, Dh and teen Dd.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/10/2022 19:47

Pre-covid we'd try to get cheap flights somewhere for £500 for 4. £1-1.5 k villa for a week. £200 hire car. So £1700-2500 before meals and spends. School holidays.

When we looked last year building the same kind of holiday post-covid seemed to cost at least half as much again, with most of the extra on flights. So we stayed in the UK.

The answer to what I’m happy to pay isn’t the same as what it actually costs! I thought we got a good deal this year as it cost £1200 for a week half board in a 4* hotel in Spain and we spent about another £500 whilst there. However youngest dd was under 2 so free and we got a free child place for the eldest who has now started school so we’re more restricted. We’re hoping to drive to Europe to stay with a friend next summer so might get 2 weeks under 2k but only because my friend lets us stay for free! I’ve looked at a week AI but they all seem to be around £3k and we just can’t afford that next year

Easily acheviable …l we paid 660 each for 9 nights in Ibiza in august/sept this year

Suggest home exchange - gray way to get a cheap school summer holiday and get your plants watered! You don’t need to own your home to swap it and you can use exchange points if dates don’t work in both sides

userxx · 02/10/2022 20:45

@MacaroniBaloney Yeah, that's definitely doable now.

Looneytune253 · 02/10/2022 20:49

We're earning about 35-40k between us and we look to pay around 1.5-2k for 3 of us on hols.AI in school hols

TheChosenTwo · 02/10/2022 20:49

No idea how to find a budget holiday, I was looking for a 3 bedroom villa with private pool last summer and nothing I found was anything under 6K for 2 weeks, not one thing!

Are you all able to afford a holiday next year AND heat your home as usual this winter?

Yes we will be able to heat our house. I have always been quite frugal with heating though. It only goes on for a few hours a day between November and March.

Next year's holiday is 10 days of Greek island hopping. We're sharing the first part of the trip with my brother and his wife however, so accommodation won't cost as much.

Flyingagain · 02/10/2022 21:52

Average family income is £31k. No idea how much a week away would cost though. We usually stay in the uk or drive.

woff45 · 02/10/2022 22:01

Back when we were average we would have paid about £2k for a holiday for 4. Our previous house was a reasonable mortgage and cheap to run so we wouldn't have been too affected by the current state to have needed to not have a holiday, unless mortgage rates flew up outside of a fix.

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 03/10/2022 10:44

I looked this year and for 2 adults, 2 kids on a standard all inclusive in the school holidays it was between £3-4K but my priority is keeping my heating on atm!!!

I think you need to clarify your definition of average op.

Notsa · 03/10/2022 23:18

I would probably expect to pay 2.5k but we don't go on holiday so I'm too well up on prices. That's roughly our days out/meals out budget for the year though with is probably our equivalent.

We have a significantly higher than average salary but we don’t do the 8-10k holidays as it just seems ridiculous to us. This year we have 2 weeks in Majorca in the school summer holidays. 3 of us, all inclusive, nice 4 star hotel and was about £4.5K all in. Package holiday.

It’s about what we usually spend - not flashy hotels but we’ve always had a great time. We spend a lot of time looking and are never too fixed on where we go - just try to find the nicest place we can for what we’ve set as our budget.

TrustPenguins · 25/07/2023 06:48

Paid about £3k in May - family of 4 all inclusive abroad for a week.
Expect a similar holiday in July / August to be about £4k - £5k though not sure I'd pay that.

MrsChuckBass · 25/07/2023 06:55

Combined family income about 70-80k
We spend about 7.5-10k of this on holidays which is a mixture of abroad/UK.
We've just been to Spain for 6 nights AI £1800 for 5 of us- 2 adults/3DC in the last week of term time.
We've got a caravan in Scotland booked for august which was £1300 for 7 nights Hmm will not be doing that again!
We have to put the dog in boarding when we are away which pushes costs up further.

SkankingWombat · 25/07/2023 07:56

We've spent £2k plus spending money for 2 weeks by taking the car ferry and staying at Eurocamp-type places plus a couple of nights city break to break up the journey. It has gone up £500 from last year. Next year we are looking to camp instead of booking a chalet to bring costs down, as no doubt they'll rise again.
We have friends who are doing 2 weeks AI in Europe, and that is costing ~£6k. We're both families of 4 with primary-aged DC's with similar incomes (and I'm not sure how our friends afford it TBH!)

PaniniHead · 25/07/2023 08:08

Paying about £1300 for one DC and I, all inclusive, flights, transfers, decent hotel, Canary Islands in October half term.
