Propanol has been a game changer for me. I don't take it daily, just as needed (for example I suffer from fucking awful panic attacks just before my period arrives). I once read on here that taking propanol induces an 'enforced calm' and that couldn't be more accurate.

It's like everything feels better, but without that floaty, disassociated feeling of other drugs.

There are no side effects for me and I don't need to take them regularly so I don't feel dependent on them in any way.

Kfjsjdbd · 30/09/2022 19:15

I take Citalopram. I was going through a really stressful period of my life (insanely awful work and boss, 2 tiny kids, house buy and sell, made redundant etc etc). I was prescribed 10mg and am on 30mg now. In the first few days of taking them I felt like I had done in early pregnancy with the sickness, but on day 6 I suddenly realised that I was in a situation where I knew before medication my heart would be beating super fast with stress, it wasn’t.

Since I started taking medication I stopped biting my nails. My husband says he no longer feels like he’s walking on eggshells. I’m more patient. I feel relaxed. I don’t sweat the small stuff that I would have done before.

I wish I had started taking them sooner. They were life changing for me and I’ll never stop taking them.

VariationsonaTheme · 30/09/2022 19:20

I take propranolol and mirtazipine. They’ve been truly life changing.

TwilightSkies · 30/09/2022 19:25

Setraline. It has transformed me and I love it so much.

Joterrin · 30/09/2022 19:30

I take citraploam, it’s changed my life.

Im more relaxed at home, I can take the kids out again without stressing or seeing stars as my blood pressure risen.

Im more relaxed at work & my anxiety has dropped off, I’m also doing therapy to work on anxiety causes.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/09/2022 19:33

Citalapran here too. 30mg. Been on it for years. It takes that edge away - that constant fear and anxiety. I still get anxious about things but I can cope now on it. I couldn't cope before and was a mess.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 30/09/2022 19:34

My partner takes Propanolol on an 'as required' basis for generalised anxiety. While it works in the sense that it reduces her typical panic responses, she also becomes extremely forgetful, repeats herself constantly, and acts like she's had 3 or 4 large glasses of wine. This is the same even if she just takes half of one tablet. It's difficult to deal with, so much so that I've had to ask her to tell me in advance if she's planning to take it, and even then she sometimes forgets.

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/09/2022 19:34

Wish I’d done it sooner. 50mg of sertraline just stops me having the regular dips into anxiety/low mood I used to have which makes life easier to manage.

LizzieSiddal · 30/09/2022 19:37

Citralopram for me hs been a life changer. I’ve been on 20mgs for a couple of years and am now on 10mgs which my Dr calls a maintenance dose. I’ve also had some counselling which together with the drugs has changed my life.

Same here. propranolol takes 10mins or so and then wham I’m no longer edgy or overthinking. I take them when panic happens rather than every day

BabbleBee · 30/09/2022 19:39

I can’t take any SSRIs, but propranolol has been an absolute life saver for me. I don’t need meds every day, I just take it if I’m beginning to feel anxious and it stops it in its tracks.

FTstepmum · 30/09/2022 19:40

Sertraline 150mg allows me to function like a relatively normal person.

Without it, I'm a bloody nightmare.

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 30/09/2022 19:41

I’ve been prescribed propanolol but am too anxious to take it. 😞It was prescribed over the phone and I think they should have listened to my heart and taken my blood pressure first. It also says I have to keep taking it until told to stop by the doctor, which I don’t like the sound of. Is it ok just take one when I feel a bit wobbly or do I have to take them all the time?

SavingsThreads · 30/09/2022 19:44

Sertaline changed my life. I can leave the house without worrying, and don't have to keep saying no to things

MinervaTerrathorn · 30/09/2022 19:48

I've taken diazepam and alprazolam in the past on an as needed basis and they really helped. SSRIs don't work for me as I could never get past the extreme side effects early on, I tried several.

DewinDwl · 30/09/2022 19:48

Propranolol- no effect
Sertraline - numb and zombied with lots of side effects
Diazepam - bliss. My anxiety presents with lots of muscle tension and nervous vomiting and diazepam stops them on their tracks.

CollieWobble22 · 30/09/2022 19:50

There's so many propranolol threads lately. Yes it does work 😁 I take 80mg a day and feel like I'm floating around not a care in the world

Better than previous daily panic attacks when waking up and being too anxious to eat

CollieWobble22 · 30/09/2022 19:51

Although I was very anxious earlier because I forgot my meds

NooNooHead1981 · 30/09/2022 19:55

Not good.

I got an iatrogenic neurological involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia that was caused by some prescribed off label antipsychotic drug called Pericyazine. This was for severe anxiety and insomnia after a mild traumatic brain injury and post concussion syndrome in 2015. It's like a combination of Tourette's and Parkinson's disease.

Unfortunately the condition is probably permanent.

I'm super sensitive to medication now and unless I was really ill, I wouldn't be very prepared to take any psychotropic drugs again.

I was polydrugged too with various other meds before I was given the antipsychotic.

This isn't to put you off though. I hope it won't scare you too much, it's just my first hand experience.

AlongCameBetsy · 30/09/2022 20:01

I tend to take propranolol before bed, my anxiety attacks often come on during the middle of the night, so this prevents major issues. Side effects are sleepiness, so that's fine, but also reduced libido, which has been an issue. But it's worth the reduced panic attacks.

popandchoc · 30/09/2022 20:03

Sertraline 100mg. I am hoping to drop down my dose soon but it has really helped me the last few months. Can go about my business and not panic about everything.

It says that because it is also used as a high blood pressure medication.

It can absolutely be used as needed at a dose of 10-40mg.

It is amazing at calming down adrenaline related symptoms - even 10mg stops my heart racing. Try a small dose to start with and see how you feel. It is not something you can become reliant on or have to take every day like other classes of anti anxiety medication.

Evilpixie41 · 30/09/2022 20:19

For me it was the best thing I ever did. Anxiety ruled my life for years and I still struggle but without medication I was nt functioning at all.

I now take duluxotine and I tolerate it very well.
